Franchise-Wide References

  • The character Stephen is named after the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking who staunchly rejected the idea that a god created the universe.[1]
  • The Software/SubApp "Gibo Eyes", which changes the in-combat cursor to different symbols based on a demon's resistance to the player's chosen attack, is a reference to the psychic medium Aiko Gibo, who appeared on various television shows from the 1970s to the 1990s.[4]
    • "Gibo Eyes" was originally from Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, which released in 1996, but it is also featured in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, which released in 2009. The reference to Gibo is present in both games because staff believed that no psychic since her had surpassed her impact, even after her death in 2003.[5]
    • In the English localizations, the app is named "Gibo Eyes" in Strange Journey, and "Judgmental Eyes" in Soul Hackers.
  • The SubApp Hyakutaro is a reference to the manga Ushiro no Hyakutarō. The name was chosen as part of a wordplay associating the idea of preventing back attacks with a guardian spirit who follows their subject from behind[b].[6]

  • The scene where a beggar tells the player that yen is worthless is a reference to the first episode of Fist of the North Star.[10] In the opening of the episode, a gang of robbers steal a briefcase of money, but when they realize that it's full of unusable currency they release the bills into the wind exclaiming that that they don't even use yen for toilet paper.
  • The name of the fiend David is a reference to an unspecified popular violin player in the hard rock or heavy metal scene.[11] According to Kazuma Kaneko, he does not clearly remember who this musician was but believes it may have been David Cross of the band King Crimson.[12]

Shin Megami Tensei II

  • The name Red Bear is a reference to the Red Bear Empire, the antagonist group from the 1982 Super Sentai parody film Aikoku Sentai Dai-nippon.[14]
  • Nadja is named after the titular character of the André Breton novel Nadja.[15].
  • Hunter Hiroshi is named and modeled after Hiroshi Yagyu, the host of the game show Million Yen Quiz Hunter.

  • There is a whip equipment named Red Bute, which is a reference to Akarenger's whip of the same name in the 1975 television series Himitsu Sentai Gorenger.
  • The item Dr.N Shoes (Ｄｒ．Ｎシューズ), which changes the skill to Leap, seems to be inspired by PyonPyon by Dr. Yoshiro Nakamatsu.
  • The item Ishii's Lab Coat (イシイさんの白衣), which changes the skill to Virus Trap, seems to be inspired by Shirō Ishii, a biological weapons specialist of Unit 731.
  • The NPC in Akihabara mentions video games that seem to parody real-life video games: Final Quest (ファイナル・クエスト) for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Me Gaten (メ・ガテン) for Megami Tensei, Fight King (ファイト・キング) for King of Fighters.
  • In Roppongi, eccentric (曲者) speech pattern demons mention lines that seem to parody the movie The Matrix.[21]

  • Kikuri-Hime's color palette is a parody of The Powerpuff Girls.[24]

  • In the screenshots within the English instruction manual of the original Strange Journey, the protagonist is named Langdon Alger and Lance Murdock referencing characters from the animated American sitcom The Simpsons.[28]
  • The crew member Anthony is named after the character Anthony Carmine from the Gears of War franchise. His dialog "People keep saying to me, 'Your name marks you for death.' When I ask why, they just laugh... What's the deal with that?" is a reference to Anthony Carmine's death in the original Gears of War.[33]
  • During the game's development, the crew member Wolf was originally named Tyler after the character Tyler Durden from Fight Club. This was because Wolf was originally planned to explain the combat tutorial to the protagonist. [34]
  • There are multiple references to the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell and the 1982 movie adaption The Thing.
    • The crew member Blair is named after the biologist who is absorbed by the monster.[35]
    • The crew member Norris is named after the 1982 film's version of the character of the same name. The book Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey: Schwarzwelt Reminiscences states that he is named after the cook; however, the cook is named Kinner in the book and Nauls in the movie. The confusion may come from the fact that Norris took on Kinner's role from the novella within the narrative in the film adaptation.[36]
    • The Extra Mission The shadow withdraws was inspired by the novel. In the Japanese version of the game, the name of the Extra Mission かげがいく Kage ga iku is also a reference to the Japanese name of the novel 影が行く Kage ga iku.[37]
    • The formation of the Schwarzwelt over Antarctica is likely a reference to the movie.[38]
  • The segment of the Extra Mission Escape plan where the protagonist must guide members of the strike team down the correct path without letting them die was inspired by the science fiction movie Aliens. During the development of the game, all of the crew members featured in the Extra Mission were named after characters in the movie:[39]
    • Mike was originally named Hicks, after the character Dwayne Hicks.[40]
    • Dawson was originally named Hudson, after the character William Hudson.[41]
    • Keema was originally named Baskes, after the character Jenette Vasquez. Similarly, the name Keema is it's own reference to the character Kima Greggs from the show The Wire.[42]
    • Daniel was originally named Drake, after the character Mark Drake.[43]
    • Scott was originally named Diethr, after the character Cynthia Dietrich.[44]
    • Steadman was originally named Wizbouske, after the character Trevor Wierzbowski.[45]
    • Mark was originally named Span, after the character Daniel Spunkmeyer.[46]
  • The dialog "Ooh! That's the Ice Vest I wanted, ho!" and "I'd kill for that thing, but I'm too weak, ho." in the Extra Mission The snowman's revenge are references to a sidequest in the Super Famicom role-playing game Romancing Saga for an ice sword.[47][48][49]
  • The SubApp Green Grass is a reference to the song Green, Green Grass of Home. The effect of increasing the chance of a Demon offering to join the player's party was inspired by an interpretation of the song's third verse which asserts that the narrator's dream was an act of mercy from God to a newly-converted death row prisoner.[51]
  • The Forma Goetite is a reference to the name of the first part of the The Lesser Key of Solomon, called the Ars Goetia.[57]
  • One of the options in the conversation with the beast type demon seems to parody the famous Japanese anime Anpanman's line "Eat my face".[c][60]

  • The live announcer at the Hunter Tournament says, "Hunter fight! Ready, go!" a reference to Stalker's line in Mobile Fighter G Gundam, "Gundam fight! Ready, go!"

Shin Megami Tensei V

  • When attempting to recruit a demon with the "Hee-Ho" Speech Pattern, the demon can strike a pose, one of the responses being to strike a more fierce pose. If chosen, there is a possibility for the demon to join the Nahobino's party unconditionally and state "I see real bizarre adventure in our future, ho!",[d] a reference to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and the series' distinctive characteristic of having characters strike eccentric poses.
  • The Segata III Game Console[e] may be a reference to the Segata Sanshiro mascot, as well as the Sega Mark III.

  • Sid Davis transforming into a more muscular version of himself through the use of acupressure points was inspired by the character Amiba from the manga Fist of the North Star.[70]

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers

  • The text on Mayone's umbrella references Himitsu no Akko-chan. The text in the triangles created by the converging squares reads "Tekumakumayakon", while the other letters in the Roman alphabet reads "Ramipasu Ramipasu Rurururu", which are respectively the spells used by Akko to transform into and from a magical girl.

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army

  • During chapter 7, an NPC in Chiyoda referred to as "Huge man on a horse" says "It seems you've seen the star next to Ursa Major, shining in the northern sky... The shadow of death is upon you." This is a reference to the character Raoh from Fist of the North Star.
  • When using Ignite on Detective Kazama for a second time, he exclaims that crimes take place at crime scenes rather than at desks,[74] referencing a quote of Detective Aoshima's from Bayside Shakedown.[75]
  • One of the showrooms in Fukagawa-cho 6th Ward has a robot called the Gyakutensoku, a parody of the Gakutensoku made in 1928.
  • The formula used for space flight is the Tsiolkovsky's Equation, which seems to be named after the Russian rocket scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.[79] In the remaster, it is changed to the Itolkovsky Equation.[80]
  • Nagasunehiko and Abihiko's special attack, Amatobi, was inspired by an unspecified mecha anime.[83] It is reminiscent of the special attack "Ultra Ganba Ninja Technique: Triangle Crash"[j] from the 1992 mecha anime Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger, but whether the twins' skill was inspired by it is unconfirmed.

  • The name "Geirin" is a reference to the potter Geirin Nakano.[73]
  • A group of four Black Frost and a Jack Frost make up a group called the "Jack-san 5," (Japanese: じゃあくサン５, romanized Jaakusan 5, referring to Black Frost's Japanese name) a reference to the real life musical group The Jackson 5. The single Jack Frost is likely meant to portray Michael Jackson, who had vitiligo and had lost melanin due to the condidtion, making him paler than his brothers at the time of the game's release in 2008.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin

  • Eikichi Mishina's nickname "Michel" is a reference to the singer Michel Polnareff.[87]
  • The arcade Mu Continent is named after a real arcade chain which was owned by Atlus.
  • The temple Goketsuji is named after the Japanese title of the fighting game series Power Instinct, Gouketsuji Ichizoku[l], which was developed by Atlus.
  • There is a Famitsu collaboration quest available in the PSP version named "The Truth of the Demon Gentleman"[m], parodying Demon Painter. The quest includes Akumaken X2,[n] parodying Maken X, Shoichi Mejiro,[o] parodying Shoji Meguro and Image Busujima,[p] parodying Shigenori Soejima.[88]

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

  • The internet café in Aoba uses the latest model of iNac computers produced by Nacintosh, referencing Apple Inc.'s iMac computer series. [89]
    • Nacintosh is derived from Macintosh, the original name for the iMac brand.
    • The Nacintosh logo is a pear with a bite taken out of it, parodying the Apple logo.
    • Nacintosh's slogan, "Think difficult," parodies Apple's advertising slogan from 1997 to 2002, "Think different."
  • The graphic for Hastur's Material Card is a reference to the collection of short stories The King in Yellow.

Persona 3

  • Various consumable items are parodies of food and drink names:
    • Cielo Mist is a combination of Sierra Mist (which is more similar to Japanese cider drinks) and Cielo from Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner. In Japanese, it is called Yotsuya Cider and is a parody of Mitsuya Cider with "yo" meaning 4 and "mi" meaning 3.
    • SoBay is a combination of SoBe and eBay. In Japanese, it is called Gokenbicha and is named after Sokenbicha, a blended tea.
    • Starvicks is a combination of coffee company Starbucks and Vicks cough medication. In Japanese, it is called Minimum Coffee, a parody of Max Coffee.
    • Cylon Tea is named after Ceylon Tea. In Japanese, it is named 255 Teas and is a parody of a tea drink called 16 Teas.
    • Aguafeena is a combination of Aquafina and the Spanish word for water (agua). In Japanese, it is called South Funabashi Artificial Water and is a parody of South Alps Natural Water.
    • Dr. Salt is a parody of Dr. Pepper in both English and Japanese.
    • Moonkist is a parody of Sunkist.
    • Nastea is a combination of Nestea and the word nasty. The Japanese name, Gokocha (halo tea), is a parody of Kirin's Gogocha (afternoon tea) line.
    • BauerBar is a parody of PowerBar. In Japanese, it is called Calorie Blend, a parody of Calorie Mate.
    • 1UP is a parody of 7 Up in both English and Japanese.
    • V6 is a parody of V8. In Japanese, it is named Vlad Țepeș after Vlad the Impaler and the description mentions it is a tomato juice made in Romania.
    • Mad Bull is a parody of Red Bull. In Japanese, it is called Moronamin G, a parody of Oronamin C.
    • Fountain Dew is a parody of Mountain Dew. In Japanese, it is called Manta, a parody of Fanta, and the description mentions the manta ray.
  • Game Panic is named after Atlus's real life amusement center chain "Game Panic",[90] which is now owned by Leisurelan.
  • There are two torn up Foo Fighters posters on the fence in the Station Outskirts.
  • When speaking to Junpei Iori in the classroom he says "I pity the foo' who don't know when to quit! Mr. J says to throw in the towel, boy!", which is a reference to Mr. T and his catchphrase "I pity the fool!"
  • On June 1st, Junpei tells the rest of the S.E.E.S. members a ghost story and starts by saying "Welcome to "Junpei's Believe It, or Don't."" This references Ripley's Believe It or Not!.
  • In the Japanese version, Tanaka's Amazing Commodities is named "Jikanet Tanaka" (時価ネットたなか) in reference to the Japanese company Japanet Takata [ja] (ジャパネットたかた), which broadcasts shopping programs on television and the radio.

Persona 3 Portable

  • A man resembling Vincent Brooks from Atlus's puzzle game Catherine appears at Club Escapade and hints at the events that happen in his game. As Atlus revealed on a web show in 2011, this man is not actually Vincent, but rather a lookalike with a mole.[91]
  • The Atlus Stick is an Atlus branded hockey stick the female protagonist can wield as a naginata weapon type.
  • The Lacross Stick is an Atlus branded Lacrosse stick the female protagonist can wield as a naginata weapon type.

Persona 3 Reload

  • In the English localization, the description for the Handheld Console item says the game Odin Cube is inserted, a reference to the Atlus-published game Odin Sphere for PlayStation 2. The Japanese version instead says "Queen Crown" (クイーンクラウン), a reference to the Atlus game Princess Crown, which had a PSP remake released in 2005.

Persona 4

  • In the Japanese manual for Persona 4, the protagonist's name is Kōsuke Tsukimori after a character in Atlus's Trauma Center series.
  • In the cutscene where the protagonist rides from the city to the Yasogami Train Terminal, he rides on a green-striped train called the Inoue Line that resembles the Yamanote Line, and then later another train that resembles the Azusa with a nameplate on the front that says Atlus (あとらす) instead of Azusa (あずさ).
  • When Kinshiro Morooka meets the protagonist on the first day of school, he says he will put him in his "rotten orange book".[92] This is a reference to the Japanese drama, Mr. Kinpachi in Class 3B. Rotten oranges gets mentioned a few more times: Morooka refers to Kanji as a rotten orange during class,[93] Morooka goes around during the camping trip and asks if there are any rotten oranges who are out of their tents,[94] and it also comes up again when describing Morooka's death in Void Quest.[95] In the English version, Morooka instead calls the orange book his shitlist during the protagonist's introduction, calls Kanji a lazy punk, says rotten apples during the camping trip, and Mitsuo's dungeon text mentions rotten oranges when referring to Morooka during Void Quest. Morooka's family name also appears to be inspired by Kinpachi, with Kinpachi meaning gold and eight, and Kinshi meaning gold and four.
  • Before the game begins, Chie Satonaka lends Yosuke Hanamura a DVD called Trial of the Dragon. In Japanese, this is named The Legend of Seiryū.[q] This is a reference to a Japanese TV drama about a female martial artist called Seiryū Densetsu: Legend of St. Dragon [ja][r] but replaces the 聖龍 in the title with Jackie Chan's Chinese stage name (成龍) with Chie still pronouncing it seiryū (which is the on'yomi reading of Jackie Chan's Chinese stage name, though Jackie Chan is not actually called this in Japanese).
  • A blue advertisement in the Junes electronics department says "Mooo" and shows a TV, a parody of Hitachi's "Wooo" TV line from the early 2000s.
    • In Golden, the advertisement was updated to feature a long haired girl resembling Rise Kujikawa.
  • Teddie begins calling the protagonist "sensei". This is a reference to the Japanese version of Looney Tunes and how Kappei Yamaguchi—the 6th Japanese voice actor for Bugs and also Teddie's voice actor—performs Bugs's "What's up, doc?" line with "sensei" being the Japanese localization for "doc".
  • Yosuke and Chie sometimes call Teddie by the name Kumakichi (クマきち) in Japanese. This is a reference to a perverted bear character by the same name in Gag Manga Biyori.
    • During the fireworks viewing on August 30th in Golden, Chie calls him Kumakichi again and asks if he wants Dojima to arrest him. In Gag Manga Biyori, Kumakichi's skits usually end with him being arrested and led away by police.
  • When Yosuke is concerned about Yukiko and asks Teddie if anyone is inside the TV, Teddie replies that no one else is there. Chie doubts him, and Teddie says he isn't lying, and that his nose is a "throbbing story".[96] The "throbbing story" part is a reference to an old Japanese TV drama, Kyōshi Binbin Monogatari [ja]. While the drama is a touching story about a teacher helping his students, the onomatopoeia binbin also has a sexual connotation that can make viewers suspicious of it, giving it a double meaning.
  • When Naoto talks about the Shirogane family, Chie responds that it reminds her of Kindaichi,[97] referring to the fictional detective Kosuke Kindaichi and his grandson who appears in The Kindaichi Case Files. Because Kindaichi is not as well-known in the west, in the English localization Chie instead says that it reminds her of a Kuzunoha that she saw in a movie before.
  • When Kanji's Shadow appears on the Midnight Channel, it welcomes viewers to a TV show called, Hatten, Boku no Machi.[s] This is a parody of the NHK children's program Tanken Boku no Machi[t] but replacing tanken with hatten, a gay slang term for casual hookups.
  • Shadow Mitsuo has skills called Whisper,[u] Prayer,[v] and Chant.[w] These are references to a message that appears in Wizardy when you revive dead characters or cure paralysis at the Temple of Cant.[98]
  • When Shadow Mitsuo transforms into Mitsuo the Hero, his third command is Spell which casts Gigadyne. Gigadyne[x] is a reference to the spell Gigadein[y] (also known as Kazap in English) from Dragon Quest.[99]
  • In order to fight Shadow Mitsuo, the Investigation Team must find the Orb of Darkness.[z] This is a reference to the Sphere of Light[aa] from Dragon Quest.[100]
  • When the protagonist interacts with the pile of bones to get the Gaia Sword, a message appears that says, "No response. It must be a tile, not an object."[ab] This is a reference to how in Dragon Quest, when the hero interacts with a pile of bones or a dead person, a message appears that says, "There's no response. It's just a corpse."[ac] The Gaia Sword itself is a reference to the Sword of Gaia from Dragon Quest III which is known as Earthcleaver in the English version.
  • Naoto's Algernon weapon is a reference to the story Flowers for Algernon where a man and a mouse undergo experimental surgery to become more intelligent, but the effects do not last and start to revert.
  • The scene where the boys are staying at the Amagi Inn and Kanji answers the phone while trembling is a reference to a test of courage skit on the variety show GakiTsuka.[101]
  • There are a couple lines where Yosuke references Takeshi Goda, also known as Gian in Japanese or Big G in English, from Doraemon:
    • After Morooka turns up dead, Kanji encourages the Investigation Team to keep going, and Yosuke responds by telling him he's talking big despite being Kanji,[102] mimicking something that Gian says to Nobita.
    • When the protagonist agrees to help Yosuke work at Junes in August, Yosuke calls him "a dear friend"[103] which Gian sometimes sarcastically addresses people as.
  • During rank 4 of Chie's Social Link, the protagonist can offer to "Do an impression of another Takeshi" which was localized as "Crack a joke" in English. The "other Takeshi" being referenced is actor and director Beat Takeshi.[104]
  • During rank 5 of Naoto Shirogane's social link, she finds her stolen Detective Badge then mentions that it has no special functionality. This is referring to the Detective Boys Badge from Detective Conan which has a built-in communicator.[105] Upon reaching rank 10, she gives the protagonist a new Detective Badge and mentions that she could have made it a camera and transceiver if she had gone back to the Shirogane family estate, but it does light up like the Conan badges.[106]
  • Quelorie Mate is a parody of Calorie Mate. In Japanese, it is called Calorie Friend.
  • A few drinks from the vending machines are parodies of Japanese drinks and they were also localized in English to be parodies of North American drinks:
    • Dr. Salt NEO is a parody of Dr. Pepper in both English and Japanese.
    • Second Maid is a parody of Minute Maid. In Japanese, it is called Bon Juice, a parody of an orange juice called POM Juice.
    • TaP Soda is a parody of TaB. In Japanese, it is called Ribbon Citron and is a form of Product Placement instead of a reference.
    • Orange Smash is a parody of Orange Crush. In Japanese, it is called Ribbon Napolin and is a form of Product Placement instead of a reference.
  • One of the quests is to collect an item called Culurium.[ad] This is a reference to a metal in Atlus's Trauma Center series.
  • During a quest, the protagonist can receive a Tankiriman Sticker from Nanako Dojima and the description mentions it shows eight heroes defeating a great evil. This is a combination of Lotte's Bikkuriman stickers (wafers that came with bonus stickers) and Neclos Fortress [ja] (another candy toy by Lotte that came with two cards and a small toy) which took place in Tankiri and involved eight heroes.
  • The English localization for the book Witch Detective describes the plot of Twilight.[107] In Japanese, the book was called Magical Detective Luvlene and it was not a reference.
  • The two wind damage items, Pinwheel and Yashichi, are references to the character Yashichi from Mito Kōmon. Kazaguruma means pinwheel and is Yashichi's title since he carries a red pinwheel shuriken.
  • The Metal Bat and Wooden Bat are Atlus branded two-handed weapons the protagonist can wield.
  • The female characters were inspired by manga heroines. Rise was inspired by Yuka Nitta from Touch, and Naoto was inspired by Ryunosuke Fujinami from Urusei Yatsura.[108]

Persona 4 Golden

  • One of the consumable food items is called the Seaweed Cracker and the description mentions penguins. In Japanese, the seaweed cracker is named Norimaki Senbei. While this does mean seaweed wrapped cracker, it is also the name of a character from Dr. Slump which takes place in Penguin Village.
  • When the Investigation Team rehearses for their live performance, the protagonist can choose to tell them, "The match isn't over until you give up".[109] This is a reference to a quote said by Coach Anzai in Slam Dunk.
  • During Marie's Social Link, she dislikes the "be" in "beefsteak" as that sounds too tough and she thinks it should be called "heefsteak" instead.[110] In the English localization, the line was rewritten to Marie being concerned about "beefsteak" losing its identity if you remove the "beef" part from the name, thus it should be shortened to "fsteak" instead of just "steak".[111] "Fsteak" is a reference to hiimdaisy's Persona 4 comics, which came out before Golden, where Shadow Teddie asks for a word that begins with "F" and Chie replies "Fsteak".
  • When the protagonist pursues the true ending and has maxed out Adachi's Social Link, Adachi will appear during the Social Link power up scene and rib the protagonist for passing out on the ground and taking a little nap while Adachi himself is being made to serve time for his crimes.[112] In the English localization, Adachi's line was rewritten to be him ribbing the protagonist for getting taken out by a bitch like Izanami.[113] Shortly after the release of the original Persona 4, Adachi became associated with the phrase "bitches and whores" in the western fandom and, as seen with "fsteak", Atlus U.S.A. was quite familiar with the fan culture surrounding the game.
  • The movie theater in Okina shows a new movie every month that is a parody of a real movie:
    • June is Loan of the Rings, named after The Lord of the Rings

    • MF-06S Brahman: The Japanese name for the Brahman calls it "Mass Produced"[ai] and the description mentions that it is green, alluding it to being similar to Zeon's mass produced green Zaku unit. In the English localization, the model is called MF-06S Brahman. This is a reference to the Zaku's model number MS-06F, swapping the F and S. This was done to shorten the name since putting in the words "mass produced" would be too long.[114]
    • Heavy-Armor Agni: The description for the Agni mentions that it is red and moves three times faster. This is a reference to Char Aznable who pilots a red Zaku and is said to be three times faster.
    • Melee Harihara: The Japanese description for Harihara mentions that it has a hammer that can "destroy a Zako in one hit".[115] This is a reference to the RX-78-2's Gundam Hammer, a morning star-type weapon that destroys a Zaku in one hit in episode 5 of Mobile Suit Gundam. Zako is a play on the name Zaku and how zako means trash or weak enemy.
    • Turbo Recon Dyaus: The description for the Dyaus mentions that "the arms are just for show". This is a reference to a conversation about the Zeong in episode 42 of Mobile Suit Gundam where Char Aznable remarks on it not having legs and a mechanic replies, "those are just for show". Japanese fans of Gundam use the phrase "the legs are just for show" and parodies of it based on this exchange.
    • Mobile Model Varna: The Japanese description for Varna mentions that it gives off a "This is no Zako" kind of feeling.[116] This quote is a reference to Ramba Ral who is known for saying, "This is no Zaku". Like with Harihara, Zako is a parody of Zaku that also means weak enemy.
    • D-Type Prithvi: The description for the Prithvi says that it uses double Heat Shields.[aj] This is a reference to the Zakrello which is also yellow and uses double Heat Natas.[ak]
  • The TV Listing has references to Japanese TV stations (based on early 2000s Japanese remote control key IDs [ja]) and programs that aired on those stations:
    • Ch 1 YHK is a parody of NHK. NHK was channels 1-3 on the remote. The program, "Blue and Purple Song Battle", is a reference to the New Year's Eve music program called Kōhaku Uta Gassen meaning "red-white song battle".
    • Ch 2 is YHK Educational, a parody of NHK Educational.
    • Ch 3 is Inaba Public TV. In some regions of Japan, remote control 3 is NHK, but in other regions, it is a local or prefectural TV station, making it plausible that Inaba's local TV station would be on channel 3. The Midnight Trivia Miracle Quiz[al] is listed under Ch 3, named after the Japanese TV show, Trans America Ultra Quiz [ja].[am] The hat that Teddie wears while hosting is a hat worn on the TV show by contestants and his nickname for himself is taken from the catchphrase of one of the Ultra Quiz hosts, Akira Fukuzawa.
    • Ch 4 is OTV, named after Nippon Television which is channel 4. The "O" is a visual reference to the 2003-2013 Nippon Television logo where the 日 symbol was represented as a ⊙. Ch 4 has the animated movie viewer, Daily Persaniland, named after the TV show Weekly Storyland [ja] which aired on NTV.
    • Marie's interview corner, Mariko's Room, is named after the talk show Tetsuko's Room. It plays on Ch 5 TV Pers, with 5 being the remote ID for TV Asahi which airs Tetsuko's Room.
    • Ch 6 is PBS, named after TBS which is channel 6 on the remote control and one of the stations that Persona 4 The Animation aired on.
    • Ch 7 is TV Tatsu (referring to Tatsumi Port Island), a parody of TV Tokyo and 7 on the remote. The art gallery, Giants of P, is named after the art program Giants of Beauty [ja] which aired on TV Tokyo.
    • Ch 8 is Yaso TV, named after Fuji TV which is channel 8 on the remote. The jukebox feature, Hey! Hey! Hoo! Music King!, is named after the music program Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ which aired on Fuji TV.

  • The Famidrive[an] (obtained by purchasing the Retro Game Set) is roughly modeled after a Nintendo Famicom, with the controller holders moved to be behind the cartridge and the accent color changed to blue instead of red. Its name may also be a reference to the Sega Mega Drive, known as the Genesis in North America.
  • All of the retro games are based on real releases:
    • "Star Forneus"[ao] is likely based on the 1984 arcade game Star Force,[ap] known as Mega Force internationally.[117] The music in Star Force was composed by Tsukasa Masuko, who was also the composer on various early games in the Megami Tensei franchise.

  • On September 3rd, Mr. Inui will ask a question about what item the statue of King Kamehameha, the founder of Hawaii, is holding in his right hand. One of the answers to this is "A dragon ball", a reference to the Dragon Ball series which features an energy blast called the Kamehameha. This is omitted in Persona 5 Royal.
  • On September 6th, Mr. Hiruta will ask a question regarding the phenomenon in which the second hand on a clock stops moving. In the English version, one of the answers to this is "The World", a reference to The World and its ability to stop time from JoJo's Bizzare Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. This is omitted in Persona 5 Royal.
  • The Sonic Socks footwear has a description that says: "Socks that let one run as fast as a hedgehog." This is a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • During a text conversation for one of the game's Requests, the protagonist has the option to respond with "Morgana, I choose you" as a reference to the Pokémon anime.
  • During Futaba's second social link, Futaba says "But then I thought about you while I was wandering around the store, and bam, a wild (Protagonist) appeared!" if the protagonist chooses "So you're ok?," which is another reference to Pokémon.

  • In the Japanese version, Yu Narukami's P-1 title is the "Siscon Delinquent Gang Leader of Steel"[cb] referencing how Japanese fans call the protagonist banchō - a delinquent gang leader. This nickname came about due to Izanagi's male school uniform-looking attire, his dialogue options, the delinquent-looking Kanji holding respect for him, and him wearing the female delinquent uniform during the crossdressing contest.[118] In an interview for Royal, Shigenori Soejima mentioned they might have gone too far when taking the fans' interpretation into account with Yu.[119]

  • Various equipment in PQ are references to Mobile Suit Gundam:
    • Mitsuru has a weapon called Eternal. Her voice actor, Rie Tanaka, voices Lacus Clyne in Gundam SEED who commands a battle ship called the Eternal.
    • Aigis has a weapon called Orthrus. Her voice actor, Maaya Sakamoto, voices Lunamaria Hawke in Gundam SEED Destiny who pilots a custom Zaku with a cannon weapon called Orthros.
