Hastur is a Persona in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Origin

Hastur is an entity that was first created by Ambrose Bierce as a character in Haïta the Shepherd in 1891 as a deity associated with shepherds. Robert W. Chambers then took the character and gave it a supernatural nature in his 4-story compilation book The King in Yellow, published in 1895, where it is named, along with Hyades and Aldebaran, as one of several nondescript things within a fictional play called The King in Yellow. The fictional text either drives all who read it mad, or subjects them to strange happenings that kill them. Up to this point, Hastur was unassociated with the Cthulhu Mythos.

Hastur was adopted into H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos after he read the works of Chambers in 1927, wherein it would change from a play character into a deity. Hastur would then be mentioned in The Whisperer in Darkness in 1930, and experience development by enthusiasts such as August Derleth, becoming a Great Old One in its own right. Hastur would become a deity with its own cult worshipping it, almost standing in contrast to Cthulhu. It is served by Byakhee.

Since Hastur is described as living in the far reaches of space, Kazuma Kaneko depicted it as an alien. Kaneko stated that he actively decided against basing the design off of The King in Yellow in order to ensure it had a distinct appearance.
