Chie Satonaka

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Chie Satonaka is a character in Persona 4. She is a student at Yasogami High School and a member of the Investigation Team.

Profile

Chie is a 2nd year Yasogami High student in the protagonist's class. She befriends the protagonist on his first day of school and later walks him home while introducing him to Inaba. When the story starts, she has been long time friends with Yukiko Amagi and she has a pet dog named Muku that was originally Yukiko's before her parents made her get rid of it. At school, Chie also became acquainted with Yosuke Hanamura before the story began, evident by how she lent him her Trial of the Dragon DVD. The two go back and forth with one another: He calls her to tell her dirty jokes and gets her involved in his various schemes throughout the school year, and she is unafraid to mess with him back. The protagonist learns from her childhood friend Takeshi Kouno that Chie has been a fighter since kindergarten, often helping out those in need.

Chie is interested in martial arts, loves meat, and comes off as a tomboy due to these interests. She has various traits that contrast with her interests, such as being afraid of bugs and darkness. In the TV World, Chie meets her Shadow which reveals Chie's struggle with her femininity. Chie is constantly comparing herself to other girls and wants to be recognized as a girl: She's jealous of Yukiko's feminine looks, she forces Yosuke to go with her while tailing Kanji so a boy will be there to protect her, and she speaks with a very feminine Japanese pronoun throughout all of her appearances.

After confronting her Shadow and gaining her own Persona, Chie becomes one of the founding members of the Investigation Team. While she is characterized as academically average and being more hands-on, she contributes to solving the murder case by saying whatever happens to be on her mind at the time.[1] She is also known to keep track of gossip, being the one who introduces the Midnight Channel to the group and keeping track of information about Mayumi Yamano's affair.

Chie cares about fashion as much as anyone else and has realistically dyed hair.[2] She wears the Yasogami High uniform with a bright green and yellow jacket over it that she accessorizes with cheap, retro-style can badges, one being for the Lexy Dolls. In the TV World, she wears bright lime green oval-shaped glasses. Design-wise, Chie's jacket was a turning point for Shigenori Soejima. He wanted to include a character in a lame jersey-style jacket to emphasize the Japanese rural stereotype, but he didn't like how the school's colors looked on a jersey jacket. Instead, he tried making Chie's jacket look more retro, and this ended up defining how he would include un-cool things because of the game's rural setting while still being able to make them look stylish.[3]

Reason: Only covers up to Chie gaining her Persona

Chie is the protagonist's classmate in class 2-2. On April 12th, after Kinshiro Morooka introduces him to the class, Chie invites him to sit in the empty seat beside her. Once the class is dismissed, she invites him to walk home with her and Yukiko Amagi. On their way out, Yosuke Hanamura approaches Chie to return her copy of Trial of the Dragon and quickly runs away. Chie opens it up to find her favorite DVD broken. Angry, she kicks Yosuke from behind into the edge of a desk. Outside the school gates, a guy from another school approaches Yukiko and tries to ask her out, and Chie explains to her friend after that he was trying to ask her out.

As they walk through Inaba, Chie learns that the protagonist has come to live there for a year while his parents are overseas. She gives him a rundown of things in Inaba and hypes up Yukiko's family inn, the Amagi Inn, as being the best thing in Inaba. Yukiko is embarrassed by Chie's antics and gets even more flustered when Chie starts asking the protagonist if he might be interested in Yukiko, who has never had a boyfriend before. The three come across a crime scene where a dead body was discovered. The detective on the scene turns out to be the protagonist's uncle, Ryotaro Dojima. He hopes the girls get along with his nephew and advises them to return home immediately.

After school on April 13th, Chie overhears Yosuke's offer to get the protagonist a steak and invites herself along since Yosuke still owes her for breaking her Trial of the Dragon DVD. Yosuke complains about her freeloading and takes the two to the Junes food court, but Chie gets upset since Junes is the store Yosuke's dad manages, and she was expecting somewhere different. Yosuke spots Saki Konishi, a 3rd year at Yasogami High. Chie explains to the protagonist that Saki's parents own a store in the struggling Central Shopping District, but she works part-time at Junes. Chie teases Yosuke over his crush on Saki and tells him about the Midnight Channel, an urban legend about watching a TV at midnight on a rainy night to see your soulmate. It happens to be raining that night, and she suggests they all watch it.

At school on April 14th, Chie mentions she saw a girl on the Midnight Channel. As she talks to Yosuke and the protagonist, they realize they all saw the same girl but are not sure what it means. Neither she nor Yosuke believe the protagonist when he mentions being able to put his hand into the TV. Chie is interested in TVs since her family has been thinking about getting a larger TV, and Yosuke takes her to Junes to show her what they have. While Yosuke shows her some cheaper models, the protagonist reaches out and puts his hand through a large screen display TV. Yosuke and Chie spot him doing this and freak out. They hear voices from customers in the electronics section, and Chie panics and ends up knocking the protagonist, Yosuke, and herself into the TV World.

The three land in a TV studio-looking area full of a yellow fog that makes it hard to see. Unsure of where to go, they wander around and find an apartment room full of posters that Yosuke thinks look familiar. Chie is creeped out by their surroundings. She begins feeling unwell and wants to look for an exit. When the three return to the studio-looking area, they find a cartoon-looking bear. Chie tries to fight it at first, but the bear gets scared when she yells at it. The bear warns them that people have been getting thrown in here recently and creates a stack of TVs the group can use as an exit then sends them back through the other side. Once back in Junes, Yosuke and Chie see a display of Misuzu Hiiragi and realize the posters back in the apartment were of her. Chie recognizes her due to her husband's affair with the recently deceased Mayumi Yamano being in the media lately. All three feel unwell after their first trip to the TV and go home for the day.

On April 15th, Chie and the others hear about Saki's death from the principal at school. Chie is shocked at Saki's sudden passing and can't believe how their peers at school are standing around and gossiping about a girl resembling Saki being the Midnight Channel. Yosuke comes up to her and the protagonist and reveals that he, too, watched the Midnight Channel the previous night and saw Saki in pain. He believes the TV is related to her and Mayumi's deaths and insists they return to that world. Though Chie understands how he feels, she does not think he should just go inside the TV again. She meets with him at Junes to try and tell him not to go, but Yosuke has made up his mind and believes they might meet the bear again and will be able to get back out. Just in case, he ties a rope around his waist and gives Chie the other end to hang on to. Shortly after Yosuke and the protagonist go into the TV, the rope breaks, and Chie is left standing in June alone, unable to contact the guys. When they finally come out of the TV later, she has been worried about both of them and gets extremely upset and runs off.

When Chie arrives at school on the morning of April 16th, Yosuke tries to apologize about the day before, but Chie drops that and immediately asks them about Yukiko. She watched the Midnight Channel the previous night and is confident she saw Yukiko on there. Furthermore, she has been unable to contact Yukiko. Based on what they learned from Teddie, Yosuke brings up the possibility that Yukiko has gone missing and is inside the TV. Chie tries to call Yukiko again, and Yukiko picks up this time, letting her know that she is helping out at the inn while a large group is staying there. The three go to Junes after school and talk to Teddie from outside of the TV, and he mentions that no one is inside the TV. However, that night, a clear image of Yukiko dressed as a princess running into a castle appears on the Midnight Channel.

The following day, Chie goes to Yukiko's house since she will not pick up her phone, and learns that she has disappeared. Later, she finds Yosuke and the protagonist at the police station after they were caught at Junes with weapons. Chie learns from the guys that a detective on the case suspects Yukiko as Mayumi's murderer. She tells them about Daidara Metalworks, where they can get new weapons, and suggests hiding them under their school uniforms before heading back into the TV. Once inside, Chie introduces herself to Teddie and demands he take them to where Yukiko is, which turns out to be the castle shown on the Midnight Channel. Chie is anxious about all of this as the Yukiko she saw on TV last night was not acting like Yukiko and said something about scoring a stud, and she runs off into the castle by herself.

The protagonist, Yosuke, and Teddie eventually find Chie on the 2nd floor of the castle. They hear Yukiko's voice talking about how Chie is so kind and always looks after her. After this, Chie's own Shadow manifests. Her Shadow mocks Yukiko's voice for calling her "kind", and says that Chie is pathetic. She has no redeeming qualities, especially as a girl. Chie's Shadow loves how Yukiko depends on her, and that dependency is why they will always be friends. Chie rejects her Shadow after hearing this, even as Yosuke tries to warn her not to, and it transforms and attacks the guys. After defeating her Shadow, Yosuke and the protagonist encourage her to confront herself. Chie admits that part of her does feel that way, and she is able to accept her Shadow and obtain her own Persona, Tomoe. She clarifies to Yosuke and the protagonist that her friendship with Yukiko is real, even if she feels inadequate. Chie collapses after, but she wants to keep going, knowing that Yukiko is still here. She only agrees to go back home after Teddie reminds her they have until the fog settles in Inaba to rescue her, and Yosuke tells her not to push herself. In the entrance to the TV World, Teddie creates Chie and her own glasses. The group forms the Investigation Team, and Chie agrees with Yosuke about the protagonist being the leader.

Persona 4 Golden

Chie is involved in multiple new scenes for Golden.

On May 7th, Chie is frightened by the lightning and gets scared when the power goes out at school during a storm. She wishes for the lightning to strike Yosuke instead since he keeps teasing her.

By July 25th, Yosuke reports that his scooter has been fixed after Operation Up Close and Personal. One of Chie's relatives is a motorcycle fanatic and she thinks they might have a scooter she can borrow. Her, Yukiko, and Rise all decide to get their licenses, too, so they can ride their scooters to the beach during summer vacation with the guys. On August 15th, if the protagonist helps out at Junes, Chie tells him that the girls all have their licenses, and the group finally rides to Shichiri Beach together on August 23rd. Chie races Kanji, taunting him for being slow. When Kanji loses his speedo and covers up in seaweed, Chie and the other girls are all grossed out and run away. After, they play in the sand with Teddie. Chie wants to play a game where the loser has to buy kalbi skewers for the others.

On August 30th, Chie watches the fireworks with the rest of the Investigation Team, Nanako, and Dojima. In October, Yosuke asks Rise to have a live event at Junes, and she agrees, but only if the rest of the group performs with her. On October 8th and 9th, Chie learns how to play the trumpet for the event. Everyone performs True Story together on the 10th and watches as Teddie goes crowd surfing.

The group plans to welcome in the New Year together at Tatsuhime Shrine. The boys expect the girls to come in kimonos and are disappointed when they show up in regular clothes. Chie scolds the guys for getting all worked up over nothing, but she is thankful they can all spend New Year's together. After the clock strikes midnight, Chie notices that it has started snowing.

Yosuke organizes a skiing and snowboarding trip with an overnight stay at a guest house. They originally planned to go early in January, but the protagonist falls ill, and the trip is delayed until February 11th, after their exams. Chie and Yosuke go snowboarding together, and Yosuke thinks Chie is doing pretty well for a first timer. When the group takes a break, Chie expresses her disappointment at the skiing resort serving white fish that night for dinner instead of beef or another kind of meat. When the group tells scary stories at night, Chie gets frightened, and ends up hugging Rise when Teddie turns off the lights. On the 12th, Chie and Yosuke go snowboarding together again before heading home.

Kotodaman

Chie appears as a unit in the Persona collab for the mobile game Kotodaman. She was in the Persona collab gacha during the original run in 2020, and once again during the rerun in 2024. As a game unit, Chie is a 5★ water-attribute unit who can be used to form words using the syllables that make up her initials: ち・ぢ and さ・ざ. She can be evolved into a 6★ unit. Her 3+ and 4+ syllable skills are named Rampage and Agneyastra, two skills that her Persona learns during Persona 4.[4]

Trivia

  • Before the game begins, Chie lends Yosuke a DVD called Trial of the Dragon. In Japanese, this is named The Legend of Seiryū[a]. This is a reference to a Japanese TV drama about a female martial artist called Seiryū Densetsu: Legend of St. Dragon[b] but replaces the 聖龍 in the title with Jackie Chan's Chinese stage name (成龍) with Chie still pronouncing it seiryū (which is the on'yomi reading of Jackie Chan's Chinese stage name, though Jackie Chan is not actually called this in Japanese).
  • In her Yasogami High social media profile in Persona Club P4, Chie says her favorite food is meat, her favorite animals are hamsters and bunnies and other small animals, but she considers math and insects to be the natural enemies of all mankind. Her favorite movies are all kung fu movies. The social clubs she has joined are "Trial of the Dragon", "Burning Dragon", "Fans of Animals with Tiny Eyes", and "Meat Lovers". Her greeting is, "Check this! Hi-yah!" Her inbox has a message from Yukiko, asking Chie to return her world history notebook.[5] Her Arena Ultimax remastered profile lists the same likes and dislikes, while also adding that Chie is good at her self-taught kung fu and generally athletic, but terrible at cooking.[6]
  • The developer Q&A about Chie reveals some background information:[7]
    • Cats are attracted to Chie, such as the one on the roof of Yasogami High, because she smells like meat and carries snacks with meat in them that she sometimes shares with the cats
    • Aside from meat, Chie enjoys junk food and sweets. Namely, the croquettes from Souzai Daigaku and the snacks sold at Shiroku Store.
    • Chie says that a cup of noodles before club activities hits the spot. The "club" she is referring to is the Kung Fu Research Club which the protagonist sometimes joins her for during her Social Link. On rainy days, or if she has spare change, it becomes the Meat Research Club.
    • Chie's interest in kung fu comes from growing up around boys and consuming media aimed at boys.
  • In Golden, Chie's midwinter jacket says "SHIZUYASHIZU" on the back, a song "Shizu ya Shizu" performed by the court dancer lady Shizuka.
