Gameplay
Shin Megami Tensei V expands on the gameplay of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, placing a larger focus on exploration of the world, while the traditional overhead overworld map is reserved for Tokyo.
The player character is the Nahobino. In battle, the Nahobino is the leader of the party, and the game will be over if he is defeated. He can recruit Demons into his party via Negotiation, then summon them from his Stock into battle, where he is allowed to summon up to three allied Demons. Like in Apocalypse, Demons have Skill Potentials determining which attributes they are most proficient in using. The Nahobino also has Skill Potentials, though unlike in Shin Megami Tensei IV and Apocalypse, his Skill Potentials are incremented per attribute via Miracles, which are an iteration of the App system seen in IV and Apocalypse. Miracles themselves are unlocked by defeating Abscesses, which are entities in the world that obfuscate the player's map and spawn Demon Symbols when approached. Abscesses contain a fixed encounter which, when defeated, will destroy the Abscess and unlock a set of Miracles for the Nahobino. Furthermore, the Nahobino and his Demons can learn skills via Essences. An Essence contains a Demon's skills and resistances, and can be fused into the Nahobino or one of his Demons to give them the Essence's skills, or change the Nahobino's resistances to match the Essence's if he has the "Divine Amalgamation" Miracle, either of which consume the Essence. In the world, the Nahobino is significantly more mobile compared to characters in prior Shin Megami Tensei titles, being able to freely walk, dash, jump and attack; his human form, however, which is only playable in indoor sections of Tokyo, is not able to jump or attack.
Battles use the Press Turn System, where Critical Hits, weaknesses, passing one's turn or summoning a Demon grant an additional action to the party, whereas having one's attack evaded or nullified reduces the amount of actions the party can perform. Additionally, the player's party has a Magatsuhi Gauge, which fills up over the course of battle or by collecting red Magatsuhi Crystals in the world. A full Magatsuhi Gauge can be spent to cast a Magatsuhi Skill, which either consists of a powerful skill or an effect that is given to the current party for the remainder of the turn, and does not cost an action to be cast. All characters have access to the Omagatoki: Critical skill, while collecting Talismans will unlock Magatsuhi Skills that can be used by specific Races of Demons.
The world features various Leyline Founts, which provide access to Cadaver's Hollow, a shop; the World of Shadows, where the player performs Fusion, unlocks Miracles and uses Essences; healing for a Macca fee; and instant travel to any other Leyline Fount in the world that the Nahobino has interacted with before. The player can also find vending machines containing Relics, and Miman, which can be returned to Cadaver's Hollow for an amount of Glory and item rewards at certain milestones. Some characters in the world also provide the player with Subquests, which are optional objectives that grant a reward once completed.
Like with previous Shin Megami Tensei titles, there is an Alignment system, though it is not based on either the Law-Neutral-Chaos or Light-Neutral-Dark scales. Instead, the Nahobino's Alignment is on the Preservation-Humanity-Reformation scale, referring to his opinion on the governing system of the world. Like in Apocalypse, this does not force the player into one of the multiple ending routes, though some events affect and are affected by the Nahobino's Alignment.
