The Digital Devil Saga series began with a project by Atlus to create a new line of the Megami Tensei series, which started shortly after the development of Persona 2 and no later than the end of 1999 or early 2000[1][2][3]. The first draft for the games was written by Yu Godai, and later adapted by Atlus for the format of a video game. Due to several reasons, Godai had to leave the project, but as part of her contract with Atlus, she was allowed to publish Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, a series of novels based on her original draft[4].
