Marie
Marie is a character in Persona 4 Golden. She is one of Igor's Velvet Room assistants, together with Margaret.
Profile
Marie is a mysterious girl the protagonist meets when he first arrives in Inaba. He begins seeing her more once he starts visiting the Velvet Room where she takes up residence. Marie goes back and forth between being appreciative and abrasive to the protagonist. One moment she might be thanking him for taking her to eat steak skewers, while the next moment she calls him a stupid jerk. As it turns out, Marie has no memories. The protagonist can take her around Inaba, introducing her to his friends, trying to help her remember something about herself, and make her own new memories. Marie is also known to write poetry that reflects her mental state. Periodically, the protagonist will find one of Marie's poems on the floor of the limousine. After the protagonist finishes reading it, Marie will rush in and take it back, embarrassed.
Marie wears punk style clothing. After entering the Velvet Room, she also wears a blue hat and bag that make her look like a postwoman. Soejima dressed her this way to contrast her with the fancier Velvet Room and to give her the appearance of someone who distances herself from people but is actually quite lonely and wants to be perceived.[1]

Aside from their interactions in the Velvet Room, Marie's involvement in the story of Golden is up to the protagonist getting to know her through her optional Aeon Social Link.

On the final floor of the Hollow Forest, Marie expands on her role in the events that have taken place in Inaba: The Sagiri would create fog, and she would absorb it. After Ameno-sagiri was defeated, there was no longer a need for the fog, so she removed it from Inaba by taking it inside herself. The fog never "disappeared"; it simply exists within her. If she is not allowed to die, then the fog can be released back into their world. She tries to convince them to leave by saying she hates them, but the group points out how her tomb, born from her mind, is filled with the imagery of places from Inaba. The Investigation Team refuses to accept that there is no way to save Marie. The protagonist suggests that, rather than Marie herself dying, they kill the fog within her. Marie trusts them and allows the fog to take over her mind, transforming her into her real self, Kusumi-no-Okami. The Investigation Team defeats Kusumi and gets rid of the fog within Marie, saving her life.
True Ending and Epilogue

If the player pursues the true ending after completing the Hollow Forest, Marie will be in the Velvet Room when the protagonist receives the Orb of Sight from Igor. Marie remembers that she was born long ago as an unconscious wish shared between human hearts. Her role was to protect humans, walk amongst them, and listen to the desires of the human world. But as humans began averting their eyes from the truth, Marie was split into two halves: One who wanted to protect humans, and one who wanted to fulfill human desires. Due to human desires never ceasing, that half became more powerful and Marie was left powerless and without memories named Kusumi-no-Okami.
When facing Izanami-no-Okami, Marie will appear in the Social Link power up scene. She tells the protagonist that people do not want a world full of fog, and encourages him to stand up once more and make everyone's real wish come true. After defeating Izanami-no-Okami, the protagonist sees a vision of Marie in the Velvet Room. She explains that herself / Kusumi-no-Okami, Izanami-no-Okami, Kunino-sagiri, and Ameno-sagiri all used to be one being named Izanami-no-Mikoto. After being defeated by the Investigation Team, the other three parts of her will soon be rejoined into Marie making her whole again.
In the epilogue, Marie has become Inaba's local weather woman under the stage name Mariko Kusumi. At times, she uses her special powers to change the weather, and offers to change it to whatever the protagonist would like. If the protagonist romanced Marie, she will also announce that she loves him on air.

Trivia
- In Marie's Social Link, she dislikes the "be" in "beefsteak" and thinks it should be called "heefsteak" instead.[2] In the English version, "heefsteak" was translated as "fsteak"[3] which is presumably a reference to hiimdaisy's Persona 4 comics which came out before the English localization of Golden.
- Marie's character was born from two ideas: To have a character in the Velvet Room who goes to the outside world,[1] and to show Izanami's perspective in order to make the game more interesting for a second playthrough.[4]
