Megami Tensei, abbreviated as MegaTen, is a media franchise created by Atlus that largely consists of role-playing video games. The franchise began with Aya Nishitani's Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei series of novels, which were adapted into a Famicom role-playing game of the same name by Atlus and was followed by an inspired sequel, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II. In 1992, Atlus released Shin Megami Tensei as a successor to their Megami Tensei video games, which subsequently spawned the Shin Megami Tensei series and eventually expanded into several other series based on the familiar Megami Tensei themes.
