Design

The original illustration from Dictionnaire Infernal

David's appearance is based on an illustration in the Dictionnaire Infernal for the entry Dans des morts ("dance of the dead"), with the coloring based on that of Swedish author Edvard Matz's Sällsamheter i Bohuslän och Dalsland.

He appears as a skeletal fiddler, resting his violin on his left shoulder and in the middle of strumming it. He is wearing all red grab reminiscent of medieval European minstrels, including a white feather bonnet, striped knickerbockers, and boots.
