This is a list of references to the Megami Tensei franchise in the Devil Summoner series.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner

- The TV in the Afro Teahouse has several references to Shin Megami Tensei:
- One broadcast says Kimio Gotou has been arrested for stockpiling weapons, and says he claims he was going to take action for change.[1]
- A second broadcast says that a base in Arizona almost fired ICBMs for unknown reasons but it was stopped, and the American military denies that it was intentional.[2]
- Another says that the American ambassador Thorman has died at age 68, and that before taking the job he was a hardliner against Japan, but after taking office, he had fostered friendly relationships between the US and Japan.[3]
- The communication service used to communicate with Redman, DDS-NET, originally appeared in Shin Megami Tensei. The symbol that appears when first launching it at the start of the game, and also appears spinning in an animation next to the DDS-NET wordmark, is a modified Hexagram of Solomon from the Lesser Key of Solomon and the same symbol that appears when booting up Shin Megami Tensei.
- According to Kazuma Kaneko, Redman is a parallel world version of Stephen from Shin Megami Tensei.[4][5][6]
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
- There are two references to the protagonist of the original Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner.
- When Ginko compares the Soul Hackers protagonist to a young man who went through something similar three years prior and says that that young man is still working hard.[7]
- In the post-game dungeon Exhibit Hall, he can be fought as a boss.
- In the original Japanese script, Kinap's name is Redman, referencing a character from Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner. According to Kazuma Kaneko, they are not the same character.[4][5]
- The mascot of Rx and Effects has a rivalry with the frog mascot of the Satomi Tadashi Pharmacy from the Persona series.[8]
- In the VR Art Museum, there is an NPC wearing the Karukozaka High School uniform from Shin Megami Tensei if....
- Multiple clients in the Pet Shop are characters from previous Megami Tensei games, including Hanoun, Mr. DNA, and Timing X from Shin Megami Tensei II and Ideo Hazama from Shin Megami Tensei if....
- The minigame's music is an arrangement of "MICOM" from Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei.
Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army
- If Raidou pursues the rumor of the dead girl calling telephone booths with Belial and Nebiros recruited, Alice will answer and call them her uncles.[9] Once Alice is defeated, the two demons say that they will settle down someplace nice and quiet in The Capital with her to live out their days in peace.[10] This is a reference to how they live together as a family in Roppongi in Shin Megami Tensei.
- Nezha can be seen carrying a Headhunter Ladle as a reference to Shin Megami Tensei where the item appeared as a possible drop upon defeating the demon.
- In the Catholic Church's cemetery, there is a gravestone that reads "...d Davi...ies here" alluding to the character Sid Davis from Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner. According to Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army Super Official Fanbook, this is a dual reference to a famous Famicom RPG which similarly featured the name of a character from another game on a gravestone, likely referring to the grave dedicated to Link from The Legend of Zelda in the original Final Fantasy. However, the character referenced in the Famicom RPG was not owned by the developers of that RPG, and Atlus believed that it would be inappropriate if they did the same, so they opted to use a character from the same series.[11]
- The Akarana Corridor features several callbacks and references to Shin Megami Tensei and Shin Megami Tensei II.
- A lost soul in the 1990s section of the Akarana Corridor will shout that the ambassador launched ICBMs that will hit Tokyo in 30 seconds,[12] referencing Ambassador Thorman launching nuclear warheads at Tokyo in the year 199X and the 30 second countdown that appears after the fact in Shin Megami Tensei.
- When Raidou interacts with the Hourglass in the 2010s section of the Akarana Corridor, he sees images that include a devastated city and demons running rampant,[13] referencing the ruined state of Tokyo after the Great Cataclysm in Shin Megami Tensei.
- When Raidou interacts with the Hourglass in the 2020s section of the Akarana Corridor, he sees images that include a village in ruins, a city of death, and three young warriors struggling for survival,[14] referencing the Hero, Law Hero, and Chaos Hero and their journey through Tokyo of the year 203X in Shin Megami Tensei.
- In the 2030s section of the Akarana Corridor, a lost soul mentions how grateful he is for unification and that his wife was a Messiah. He also mentions how much they owe to the schoolboy with a gadget on his arm that defeated gods and demons,[15] referencing the Hero and the period of the Communal Cooperative Society[16]after the end of Shin Megami Tensei.
- When Raidou interacts with the Hourglass in the 2040s section of the Akarana Corridor, he sees images that include the ocean, an underwater city, and a cathedral floating on the water,[17] referencing the Great Flood and Basilica in Shin Megami Tensei.
- A lost soul will say that only those who hold love for God will be allowed into heaven, and that the Great Cataclysm from 30 years prior was simply a test of faith,[18] referencing the teachings of the Messian Church[19] in Shin Megami Tensei.
- In the 2050s section of the Akarana Corridor, a time tourist will talk about another man named Raidou who was a Templar Knight who left the Center,[20] the same the Templar Knights working for the Center in Shin Megami Tensei II.
- In the same section, a lost soul will say that in the Center's mercy, they gave the slow and stunted a purpose, that being to work at the Factory until they die,[21] referencing the Center's inhumane treatment of the Factory workers in Shin Megami Tensei II.
