The Protagonist is a playable character in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. He is a crew member of the Red Sprite, one of the Schwarzwelt Joint Project's four ships sent to investigate the Schwarzwelt, a growing, destructive phenomenon in the center of Antarctica that is threatening the Earth. Upon entering the Schwarzwelt, the Protagonist and his other crew mates all become stranded inside and are forced to defend themselves from an onslaught of Demons, while trying to find a means of leaving the Schwarzwelt and destroying it.
The Protagonist is not given a default name in the game and is left up to the player to name. In the Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Drama CD audio drama, he is given the name Tadano Hitonari.

- In the screenshots within the English instruction manual of the original Strange Journey, the protagonist is named Langdon Alger and Lance Murdock referencing characters from the animated American sitcom The Simpsons.[1]
Nomenclature
In the Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Drama CD audio drama, the protagonist's name is Tadano Hitonari, a pun on "tada no hito nari" meaning "just an ordinary person."[2]
