Nanako Dojima

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Nanako Dojima is a supporting character in Persona 4. She is the daughter of Ryotaro Dojima.

Profile

Nanako is the young daughter of Ryotaro Dojima. Her mother, Chisato, passed away and her father is often busy with work, leaving Nanako home by herself. After the protagonist's arrival in Inaba, he begins bonding with Nanako as he returns to the Dojima house each day and finds her sitting on a cushion near the TV. She begins calling him her big brother and they become a part of one another's lives. Occasionally, the protagonist brings Nanako along when he hangs out with his friends who all come to know her and also treat her like a younger sibling.

Nanako is portrayed as a fairly innocuous and well-behaved child. Like many children, she speaks using her name as her pronoun. She loves Junes and is delighted whenever the commercial comes on. When the girls on the Investigation Team make terrible omelettes, she tries all of them and graciously calls all of them delicious. And through her Social Link, she opens up to the protagonist about the distance between her and her father.

Nanako has brown hair, parted into small pigtails with ribbons. In Persona 4, she always wears pink and white, such as a three color pink dress with a white turtleneck in winter, and a white sundress with pink ribbons in summer. In Persona 4 Dancing, Nanako gets to dance with Kanami Mashita and wears a yellow outfit and apron similar to Kanami's. While designing Nanako, Shigenori Soejima was conscious of her role in the plot. He wanted the player to be concerned when something happened to her.[2] One of Soejima's drafts for Nanako included a baseball cap and jeans, but he felt she looked too independent to bother coming home. He also tried giving her long hair, but it made her look like too much of a sheltered princess which did not fit as Dojima was not characterized as sheltering her.[3] Nanako's clothes ended up being fairly plain as Soejima imagined that Dojima bought all of them at Junes.[2]

Persona 4

Nanako first appears on April 11th when she and her father pick up the protagonist from the train station. She hides behind her father's back and meekly says hello to her cousin. They stop at Moel Gas Station on the way home, where Nanako goes to use the restroom. When she returns to the car, she notices the protagonist looks ill. At home, the three sit down for dinner, but Dojima is called away for work before long. Nanako explains to her cousin that her dad is a detective. She gets bored of the news about Taro Namatame and Mayumi Yamano's affair and flips to a different channel that is playing a Junes commercial. Nanako cheerfully sings along with the theme song. She notices that the protagonist is not touching his sushi and asks if he is going to eat.

On April 12th, the protagonist wakes up and finds that Nanako has made breakfast for the two of them. She walks the protagonist partway to school. During the evening, Nanako and the protagonist watch TV together, and she wonders if her dad is coming home or not. On the news, there are reports of Yamano's death, which the Inaba Police Department is involved in investigating. Nanako recognizes that as being her dad's workplace. She finds it scary when the reporters mention Yamano was found on a roof, but she cheers up when a Junes commercial comes on. Dojima returns home on April 13th. Nanako is excited that he is home but also scolds him for being late to dinner. Dojima asks Nanako to put on the news. When a Junes commercial comes on, Nanako sings along and asks her dad if they can go to Junes together sometime. She is disappointed to see he has fallen asleep on the couch. When the protagonist watches the Midnight Channel, he hits his table, and Nanako comes to check on him before telling him good night.

When the protagonist returns home on April 14th, Nanako and Dojima are waiting for their instant noodles. Dojima observes the protagonist seems ill, and asks Nanako to get him some cold medication. On the evening of April 15th, Nanako sees that another incident has occurred on the news and assumes her dad will not be home that night. She gets bored of watching the news about Yukiko Amagi and asks the protagonist to help her do the household chores. Starting on April 16th, Nanako begins greeting the protagonist whenever he returns to the Dojima house at night. When the protagonist wakes up on April 17th, he sees that Dojima is gone due to work. Nanako tells the protagonist she will be fine by herself if he has to leave the house. At night, Dojima returns to the house and the three eat dinner together. Dojima tries to ask the protagonist about something that happened earlier that day, but Nanako assumes they are fighting. When the weather report comes on, Nanako asks if the weather person is the one who decides the weather. Dojima begins to correct her, then drops it.

On the day that Yukiko is rescued from the TV World, Dojima brings Tohru Adachi to the house for dinner and introduces him to Nanako and the protagonist. After listening to their banter, Nanako complains about being hungry. Adachi observes that Dojima has a soft side around Nanako, which prompts Dojima to tell him to shut up. On April 29th, Nanako changes the TV channel without her dad's permission and sees a commercial for Junes. She points out how Junes will be open during Golden Week and asks if they can go there on a family outing. The following evening, Dojima tells Nanako he might be able to get May 4th and 5th off. Nanako gets her hopes up at first, then questions if her father will really be able to get time off since they had to cancel plans before. Dojima also suggests they go on a real trip instead of just going to Junes, and Nanako gets excited.

When the protagonist comes home at night on May 2nd, he and Nanako see news about an ATM at the Inaba Credit Union being stolen. Due to this, Dojima calls the house and tells Nanako that he cannot make it for Golden Week. Nanako hands the phone to her cousin and immediately goes to her room. On May 3rd, Chie Satonaka shows up at the Dojima house to invite the protagonist out for Golden Week. She invites Nanako to accompany them, and the group ends up at the Junes food court with Yosuke Hanamura and Yukiko Amagi. Nanako tells the group about how they had planned to go on a trip somewhere, with the protagonist making their lunches. Chie is impressed by his ability to cook and dubs him the big brother of their family. Nanako repeats after her and begins calling the protagonist "big bro". Yosuke jokes about him and Chie having a cooking contest with Nanako as their judge, though he doubts either of their meals would compare to Nanako's mom. Nanako plainly tells them that her mom passed away in an accident. Yosuke apologizes, but Nanako says it's okay since she has her dad and now her big brother. On May 5th, Nanako and the protagonist see a news report about the suspect in the ATM robbery being arrested, and Dojima returns home. Even though her dad had to cancel their trip, Nanako is quite happy since her big brother and his friends hung out with her at Junes. Dojima gives her a platypus t-shirt as a Children's Day gift.

Nanako watches TV with her dad and big brother and sees the report about biker gangs on May 13th. When her father starts talking about the boy on TV, Kanji Tatsumi, she assumes that her dad knows Kanji. After Kanji is rescued from the TV World, Nanako is home when Dojima tells the protagonist about Kanji's return. Dojima asks the protagonist why he was at Tatsumi Textiles, and Nanako assumes the two are fighting again. Nanako and the protagonist are home alone on June 14th. Nanako seems bored, and the protagonist does coin tricks for her to cheer her up. On June 19th, Nanako sees Rise Kujikawa's press conference about going on break, and asks her dad if Rise is quitting her job. Both the protagonist and Dojima come home with tofu from Rise's family's store on June 22nd. Nanako is surprised that both her dad and big brother got to meet Rise, though it seems like they are fighting again. Once Rise is rescued from the TV World, Nanako is at home with the protagonist when Adachi brings her dad home. Dojima is very drunk, and Nanako goes upstairs to prepare his futon.

On July 10th, Kinshiro Morooka turns up dead. Nanako is afraid and knows that her dad will not be coming home, but the protagonist reassures her he will be there for her, and she feels relieved. He does a trick with his fingers to distract her and cheer her up. Once the Investigation Team finds Mitsuo Kubo, they decide to have a cooking competition where they make dinner for Nanako, who requests omelette fried rice. While waiting for everyone to finish cooking, Nanako is amazed that Rise is at their house. She meets Teddie, and is confused when he talks about "going back" soon due to everyone keeping their promise. Instead, she asks him to make a new promise to stay and play with her. The girls and the protagonist finish making their omelettes, and Nanako tries all of them. She cheerfully tells them that all three girls' omelettes taste great, but the one she enjoys the most is the protagonist's,[4] telling him it's the best omelet fried rice she has ever had. On August 13th, Dojima brings home a large sushi platter to celebrate the end of the murder case. Nanako notices the sushi has wasabi and asks her dad to remove it from the hirame.

After Mitsuo's arrest, the Investigation Team plans to go to the festival at Tatsuhime Shrine together on August 20th. The girls all meet up at Yukiko's and change into yukata, then meet with the boys at the shrine. Teddie compliments Nanako and calls her cute. She breaks from the group and goes around with her father. As summer break comes to an end, Nanako begins doing her summer homework. If the protagonist chooses to, he helps Nanako work through it, and on some nights, his friends come over and help as well. On the last day of summer vacation, Dojima gets a watermelon and has the protagonist invite his friends over to share it. Nanako gets excited about the idea of splitting the watermelon, but she is disappointed when Dojima it home and it is pre-sliced. Chie and Rise cheer her up by promising they can split one next year at the beach.

When the protagonist returns from Tatsumi Port Island on September 10th, Nanako welcomes him home and says she wants to go to Iwatodai one day, too, to visit Destiny Sea. On September 12th, Nanako watches TV with the protagonist and sees Naoto Shirogane. She tells the protagonist that she will attend the same high school as he and Naoto when she is older. After rescuing Naoto from the TV World, the protagonist comes home to Dojima, Nanako, and a drunk Adachi. Nanako asks Adachi if more scary things will happen. Adachi reassures her that everything is fine because he is the brainiest out of everyone at the police station, though Nanako is confused about what "brainiest" means. The protagonist and his friends come to study at Junes on October 11th, where they find Teddie and Nanako hanging out together in the food court. Nanako thinks it is strange that Teddie is unsure of who he is, but she remembers a story about a king who was trapped in a forest due to a curse and assumes Teddie must also be a king. On October 20th, Nanako arrives home after the protagonist and hands him a letter addressed to him with no sender and assumes it must be from a friend.

On October 30th, during the second day of the Yasogami High School culture festival, Dojima heads off on a business trip and leaves Nanako in the care of the protagonist and his friends. That night, Yukiko invites them all to stay at the Amagi Inn. When the girls get in the hot spring together, Naoto strikes up a conversation with Nanako and asks if she feels scared about staying at someone else's house. Nanako finds it quite fun since she is usually alone at home, but she always does as her dad tells her when she is home alone and never opens the door for strangers. After, the boys come into the hot springs, and the older girls scare them off by throwing buckets. Nanako cheerfully remarks on how they hit them so many times. On Halloween, Nanako and the protagonist see a news report about Mr. Kozai, a representative from an environmental group who came to Inaba due to the recent fog. He visited an elementary school and spoke to students playing in the fog. Nanako tells the protagonist that it was her school that he came to. After, Nanako begins coughing, and the protagonist notices she has a fever. He puts her to rest on the couch, and she starts talking about how much fun they will have in winter before he goes back home in spring.

Nanako answers the door on November 4th, which turns out to be a deliveryman who was looking for the neighbor's house. Dojima calls shortly after and tells her he will not come home until tomorrow, but she will be okay since her big brother is with her. After, Nanako and the protagonist get out the kotatsu, but it seems to be broken, and the protagonist tells her they can go shopping for a new one at Junes.

As promised, Dojima returns home on November 5th. He hands the protagonist a letter that arrived for him. After seeing what is written on it, Dojima demands the protagonist tell him what is going on. Nanako gets concerned, but her father assures her they aren't fighting. He takes the protagonist to the police station and tells Nanako not to wait for them to come home. While the protagonist is being held at the police station, he watches the Midnight Channel again and realizes that Nanako is the person on TV. Shortly after, Namatame comes to the Dojima house, abducts Nanako, and throws her into the TV World using a TV he keeps in the back of his delivery truck.

The Investigation Team finds Nanako and Namatame in Heaven. Nanako cries out for her brother, but Namatame holds her and claims he will "save" her. After hearing Nanako say she can't breathe, Yosuke and Kanji run at Namatame, causing him to drop Nanako, and the protagonist catches her. The team apprehends Namatame and brings both him and Nanako out of the TV World. Nanako has gotten a little better by November 21st, and the Investigation Team visits her in the hospital. She is weak and in pain but happy to see her big brother. She asks him to stay by her side and falls asleep shortly after.

After exams are over on December 3rd, the protagonist remembers his promise to buy a new kotatsu with Nanako. While shopping for one at Junes with his friends and planning a party for when Nanako recovers, they get a phone call from Adachi, who tells them to come to the hospital quickly as Nanako's condition is worsening. The protagonist stays by Nanako's side as she asks for her father. The doctor asks if she can hear them and tells her to hold on. Nanako begins to fade and tells the protagonist how scared she is, and she flatlines before Dojima makes it to her room. When the protagonist stops his friends from killing Namatame and convinces them that they are missing something, they return to Nanako's room and discover she has recovered.

On December 6th, Teddie returns to the human world after learning that Nanako is still alive and visits her in the hospital. She wakes up and tells him that she heard him, her big brother, and everyone else telling her to hang in there and keep going. Her doctor tells Teddie that Nanako might have recovered because she heard the voices of those around her. On December 25th, the protagonist gets a call from Dojima, who tells him that he and Nanako are being temporarily released from the hospital for Christmas. The Investigation Team throws a small party, showing Nanako the new kotatsu and serving a large Christmas cake. Teddie also gifts her a Teddie doll made out of his own fur.

By March 20th, Nanako and Dojima are home from the hospital, and the protagonist is packing up and getting ready to leave Inaba. Nanako hands him a letter from someone before he heads out to tell everyone goodbye. Later, he seeks the two out at the Samegawa Flood Plain, asking them about what happened the first day he was in Inaba. Nanako recalls that he felt sick after talking to the Moel Gas Station Attendant, and she only remembers this because she found the attendant odd. The following day, Dojima and Nanako go to the train station to see the protagonist off. Nanako starts crying and hugs her older brother, wishing he wouldn't leave. Before the protagonist boards the train, she tells him goodbye and that they will see each other again one day.

Other Endings

On December 3rd, if the protagonist agrees with his friends about killing Namatame, then Nanako remains dead. When they return to her hospital room, Yosuke knows that Nanako would not be happy about their decision. Alternatively, if the protagonist stops his friends from killing Namatame but cannot convince the group to keep searching for the truth, then Nanako miraculously revives, but is very weak and is not out of the hospital by spring.

Persona 4 Golden

On August 30th, the Investigation Team plus Nanako and Dojima go to a fireworks display.

Nanako and the protagonist build a snowman resembling Teddie on January 2nd. Her and Dojima return to the hospital on January 3rd but come back home on January 20th. Teddie assumes he has to leave since the protagonist's real family is back, but Nanako encourages Teddie to stay with them since he's their friend. To celebrate their return from the hospital, Dojima buys a sushi platter for everyone to share, and Nanako calls dibs on the hirame and kohada pieces.

On Valentine's Day, Nanako surprises the protagonist with a chocolate resembling a Slime that she made using ingredients suggested to her by Chie, Yukiko, and Rise. She had asked Naoto too, but Naoto didn't get back to her until after Nanako was done, and had reassured Nanako that the protagonist would love whatever she gave him. After Nanako thanks him for everything and says that she loves him, the protagonist sees no choice but to try this new version of Mystery Food X, causing him to pass out.

During the montage leading up to March 20th, Nanako goes to the mountains with the Investigation Team, eats hotpot during Hinamatsuri with everyone at the Dojima house, and watches the protagonist make chocolates before White Day.

Epilogue

When the protagonist returns to Inaba during summer vacation, Nanako has grown her hair out and started taking piano lessons. Her mother was a piano teacher, and Nanako hopes to play the piano for her dad one day. Nanako is a fan of the new weather woman, Mariko Kusumi, and repeats her catchphrase. She still does not understand what a weather person is, as she still assumes they determine what the weather will be. (Though as Yosuke tells her, in the case of Inaba's new weather woman, this is somewhat true.) Dojima reminds Nanako that there was something she wanted to tell the protagonist, and Nanako leads everyone in welcoming the protagonist back to Inaba.

Trivia

  • At first, Nanako was written with overly cutesy dialogue, but the writers dialed it back and made her talk more realistically.[5]
  • In her Persona Club P4 profile[6] and her Arena Ultimax remastered profile,[7] Nanako's favorite things are her dad, her older brother, Risette, everyone else in the Investigation Team, and Junes. She dislikes fighting and shiokara. Her special skill is singing the Junes jingle.
  • During the development of Persona 4 Arena, Arc System Works jokingly suggested adding Ryotaro Dojima as a playable character, with him summoning Nanako as his Persona. The idea was dropped as it likely would not have elicited a positive reaction from Atlus if presented.[8]
  • During Atlus's 35th anniversary knowledge test, the final question was, "What date did Nanako first call the protagonist her older brother?"
  • In the 2015 build for Persona 5, there is a model for a character who is assumed to be an older Nanako with longer pigtails and a down jacket that has "N. Dojima" written on it.[9]
