Teddie
Teddie is a character in Persona 4. He is also the mascot who is used to represent the game.
Profile
Teddie is a mysterious figure resembling a bear costume suit that the protagonist, Yosuke Hanamura, and Chie Satonaka encounter in the TV World. Teddie is unaware of who he is but knows the TV World as his home and remembers when it was a beautiful place. Lately, it has become more hostile, and someone has been dumping bodies in there, which Teddie wrongfully assumes is the protagonist and his friends. Teddie joins the group to assist them in the murder investigation, creates special glasses that allow them to see through the fog, and uses his nose to sniff out where the kidnapping victims are.
Teddie comes off as being young and impressionable, akin to a toddler, and he uses his name as his pronoun similar to many young children. He repeats words and learns things from what he experiences during his time with the Investigation Team, the most noticeable being how he picks up the Japanese phrase for girls hitting on guys from Shadow Yukiko.[a] Teddie takes an interest in girls after being pet on the head by Yukiko Amagi and begins trying to hit on her, Chie, and later Rise Kujikawa using the new—incorrect—phrase he learns from Yukiko's Shadow.
Teddie eventually gains a human body and comes to the real world. He begins living with Yosuke's family and participating in everyday life outside the TV. He works a part-time job at Junes with Yosuke, goes by the alias Kumada at Junes and around Yasogami High,[b] and gets hooked on vanilla ice cream bars.[c] As Teddie gets to know the group, he wonders about his purpose and identity. These topics become the core of the bond between him and the protagonist, whom he confides in and starts calling sensei.
Teddie appears as a white, blue, and red colored bear mascot with a large zipper around his head. In July, he gains a human body and starts walking around the real world as a blonde haired blue-eyed boy dressed in clothes from Junes. For Teddie's design, Hashino requested he be cute and loveable. Based on Hashino's thought that "cute" would be big, fluffy, and accepting, Soejima went with a bear that resembles vintage toys such as Kewpie dolls. Soejima intentionally made Teddie look like he is already outdated with the color palette and the buttons that get smaller. Teddie's head was inspired by the look of an astronaut helmet as a type of retrofuturism and throwback to the Showa era when people were more hopeful. Originally, Atlus thought it would be surprising if Teddie were a beautiful woman inside of the bear suit. But after switching Naoto Shirogane from a boy to a girl, they decided to make Teddie a guy instead, and he ended up with his pretty blonde hair and blue-eyed look.[1]

Reason: Only covers up to the founding of the investigation team (april 17th) |
On April 14th, the protagonist, Yosuke Hanamura, and Chie Satonaka visit the TV World for the first time. When they return to the studio-looking area, they find a cartoon-looking bear. The bear lives inside the TV World and suggests the trio leave soon and creates a pile of televisions that they can use to leave the TV World and return to Junes.
After Saki Konishi's death, Yosuke and the protagonist return to the TV World on April 15th and find the bear again in the studio area. It assumes the two have been throwing people in the TV lately since they were able to come back and do not seem to have been forced in. Between Yosuke's deductions and what the bear says about the TV World, they piece together a connection between the TV World and the murder victims. Eventually, the bear believes Yosuke about him and the protagonist not being responsible for throwing people in. But it forces them to agree to solve the mystery, or it will not let them out. The protagonist recalls what Igor said about a mystery, believes this is what he referred to, and promises the bear they will help.
The bear introduces itself as Teddie and gives them special glasses to see through the fog in the TV. He leads the protagonist and Yosuke to the Twisted Shopping District, where the second victim was thrown in. Outside, the two are attacked by two enemy Shadows. The protagonist instinctively summons his Persona and uses it to fight the Shadows to protect the group. Teddie assists by teaching him the basics of battle. Following the fight, they begin to hear voices, but Teddie is unsure of what they are. The three enter the TV World version of Konishi Liquors, where they find Shadow Yosuke, and Teddie is surprised at how there can be two Yosukes at once. He advises Yosuke to accept his Shadow, as it is something that manifested from him, or else it will go mad and attack again. Yosuke heeds Teddie's words and can admit that his Shadow is part of him.
Yosuke realizes that the murder victims must have been attacked by their own Shadows, just like he was. Teddie gives him words of encouragement: The victims were ignored by the Shadows and only disappeared after the fog lifted, meaning they can use their powers to save the people who fall into the TV, just like how the protagonist was able to help Yosuke. Having met the two and seen Shadows appear from humans, Teddie begins questioning where he comes from. He only knows about the world he lives in and has never thought about these things before. The protagonist remembers their promise to Teddie and agrees to come back. Teddie warns them not to try entering the TV World from another TV, or else they will not end up in the same place again and he might not be able to help them get out.
On April 16th, the boys and Chie talk to Teddie from outside the TV to ask if Yukiko Amagi has fallen inside, but no one is there besides him. Yukiko's clear image appears on the Midnight Channel that evening, and the following day, the three return to the TV to rescue her. Teddie tells them that a little after they spoke to him through the TV, someone else did enter the TV. Teddie has already detected where this person is, and leads the group to Yukiko's Castle, which Chie and Yosuke recognize from Yukiko's broadcast. Yosuke tries to ask Teddie about the images that get broadcast, but as Teddie is inside the TV himself, he does not see what gets shown in the real world and has no idea what Yosuke means. He assumes the program is related to whoever gets thrown in the TV. Furthermore, he is intrigued by what Chie says about Yukiko's TV image wanting to score with a hot stud, but no one will answer him about what that means.
Chie gets concerned about Yukiko and rushes into the castle by herself. The guys and Teddie chase after her and find her on the 2nd floor when her own Shadow manifests in front of them. Like with Yosuke, Chie rejects her Shadow, and Teddie tells the boys to use their Personas to protect her. After the battle, Chie is exhausted and wants to keep going to save Yukiko. Teddie tells her not to overdo it and reminds the group that the weather between the TV and the real world is opposite, and the people inside the TV are safe until the fog lifts in the TV and it becomes foggy in reality. Back at the entrance to the TV World, Teddie makes Chie her own special glasses. Now with an objective and a deadline, they form the Investigation Team with the protagonist as their leader, which Teddie has no objections to.

His gender is "A bear who lives for a woman's love". His favorite food is sweets, but even more than sweets, he loves sweet, cute girls. His special skill is using his nose to detect people, he dislikes people who disturb his hibernation, and he does not have patience in his vocabulary. - The developer Q&A about Teddie reveals some background information and "explanations" regarding his character:[5]
- Atlus has no explanation as to how Teddie can make glasses, how his bear costume works, or how he his human body fits inside the bear costume. They write it off as "Teddie Power" and compare it to Schrodinger's Cat.
- Later, Atlus responded to a fan question that Teddie makes glasses by using tools from the TV World's version of an optician's store in Inaba.[6]
- Yosuke bought Teddie a basic cell phone which Kanji decorated. In addition to buying the phone, Yosuke pays for all of Teddie's other expenses such as his cell phone bill, his food, and his snacks.
- Teddie mentions that he has ways of making himself feel at home in the TV World. Atlus suggests he has some sort of dwelling there which he calls home. Once gaining a human body and living in the real world, he instead takes up residence in Yosuke's closet.
- Atlus has no explanation as to how Teddie can make glasses, how his bear costume works, or how he his human body fits inside the bear costume. They write it off as "Teddie Power" and compare it to Schrodinger's Cat.

Notes
- ↑ Yukiko's Shadow uses the Japanese phrase specifically for "girls hitting on guys", 逆ナン (gyakunan). Chie repeats this word when quoting what the shadow says, and Teddie in turn picks it up from Chie repeating Yukiko's Shadow. In the English version, this was localized as "scoring a stud" early in the game, but only as "scoring" whenever Teddie begins repeating it later on, thus obfuscating that he is repeating Yukiko's Shadow and using the wrong gendered phrase.
- ↑ In the English version, this was translated as "Terry" and "Eddie", but no one ever calls him by those names.
- ↑ "Topsicles" in the English localization.
- ↑ In the English localization, Teddie has no alias and still goes by Teddie in the real world. The line where he is misinterpreted as saying his name is Kumada was changed to a person in Junes mistaking Teddie as saying his name was Terry or Eddie.
