Naoto Shirogane is a character in Persona 4. Naoto is a member of the Investigation Team and a first year at Yasogami High School, as well as a detective currently working with the Yasoinaba Police Department.

Profile

Naoto Shirogane is a prodigious freelance detective, working alongside the Yasoinaba Police Department to discover the culprit of the double homicide that occurs in Inaba during April, 2011. Despite only being a first year in high school, Naoto takes the role of the fifth in the Shirogane lineage of detectives very seriously, often acting more mature than one Naoto's age would. This causes Naoto to have difficulty taking the feelings of others into account,[6] and Naoto has expressed a distaste for activities deemed childish.[7] Despite this, however, Naoto does occasionally show notes of immaturity, specifically regarding the occult.[8]

Naoto first appears in May, doing an independent investigation into what has been happening in Inaba. In July, Naoto is officially brought on board the Inaba PD's investigation into the serial murder case and transfers to Yasogami High to attend school. From then on, Naoto continues to cross paths with the Investigation Team, who try to include the young detective in their social lives. After Mitsuo Kubo is arrested, Naoto refuses to believe the case is over while the rest of the police and even the Investigation Team celebrate. Naoto recklessly continues pursuing the truth before awakening a Persona and becoming the final member of the Investigation Team.

During the events of Persona 4, on days in which school is not in session, such as holidays, Naoto is typically seen wearing formal clothing befitting the season, all of which have blue as the primary color. The standard male Yasogami High School uniform is worn on days in which Naoto does go to school. Shoes with platform soles and the newsboy hat are present in almost all of Naoto's outfits with very few exceptions. In 2013 during the events of Detective Naoto, Naoto has longer hair and wears a light blue colored suit with a tie.

May - July, 2011

Naoto first appears in Persona 4 on May 16, 2011, as "Slender young man," encountered in the Central Shopping District's textile store finishing a conversation with the owner.[9] Later, Naoto is seen outside the textile store speaking to Kanji Tatsumi, making plans to meet him the next day.[10] Naoto is seen again the next day in front of Yasogami High School, once again speaking to Kanji. The two walk to the Samegawa Flood Plain together as Yosuke Hanamura and Chie Satonaka follow, though their presence is noticed and Kanji chases them away. During the search for clues to find Kanji in the TV World, Naoto is spoken to by the Protagonist. Naoto tells the Protagonist about Kanji, noting that something about him felt off, leading Naoto to tell him directly that he seemed to be an odd person.[11]

Naoto is seen again at the Marukyu Tofu store on July 10, 2011, shortly after the death of Kinshiro Morooka, now labeled as "Hat-wearing boy." Naoto speaks to the Investigation Team about the late Morooka, specifically mentioning inconsistencies that appear upon cross-referencing the circumstances regarding his death to those of Saki Konishi and Mayumi Yamano earlier in the year.[12] Naoto then leaves, promising to keep an eye on the Investigation Team.[13] Later the same day, Rise Kujikawa reveals to the rest of the Investigation Team that Naoto had been visiting the Marukyu Tofu store frequently, asking about the Investigation Team and Rise's time missing, though Rise does not reveal any information regarding the other world to Naoto.[14]
A day later, Naoto interrupts a meeting between the Investigation Team, informing them that a suspect for the murders has been identified,[15] as well as accusing the group of treating investigating the murders as a game.[16] Upon retaliation from the Investigation Team, however, Naoto opens up slightly, and insight is provided regarding Naoto's feelings about the case coming to a close.[17] Naoto then departs, leaving the Investigation Team to wonder if this is actually the end of the case.

September, 2011

Upon school beginning again after summer vacation ends, Naoto speaks to the Investigation Team in front of Yasogami High School regarding the detective's presence.[18] Naoto also mentions a dissatisfaction with the conclusion of the case, which factored into the decision to stay.[19] After school, Naoto is witnessed rejecting an invitation to go out with two first-year girls,[20] which the Investigation Team interrupt. Chie asks if Naoto would like to hang out with them, though this offer is rejected as well.[21]
During the field trip to Tatsumi Port Island later in September, Naoto spends time with the Investigation Team at Club Escapade. As a part of the King's Game, an intoxicated Yukiko Amagi asks Naoto to tell the group a secret, a demand Naoto agrees to under the condition that the rest of the group reveals one as well.[22] However, Naoto claims not to have any applicable incidents and instead takes the opportunity talk about the Shirogane lineage of detectives, along with further reasoning behind the decision to attend Yasogami High School.[23] In return, Naoto asks what the Investigation Team's true involvement in the murder case is, though Yukiko's inebriated response causes Naoto to feel mocked.[24]
Two days after returning to Inaba, Naoto makes an appearance on TV regarding the murder case, speaking publicly about the belief that the mystery has not yet been solved, as well as mentioning inconsistencies with Kinshiro Morooka's homicide when compared to those of Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi.[25] As the Protagonist and his friends walk to school the following morning, Naoto appears before them asking to discuss the case.[26] Upon approval, Naoto summarizes consistencies throughout the first two incidents, noting that disappearances of Yukiko Amagi, Kanji Tatsumi, and Rise Kujikawa fit some into some of them, as well as discrepancies in Mr. Morooka's case when compared to the others.[27] Naoto criticizes the police for calling the case "solved" with such discrepancies still present and walks away, leaving one final, ominous message for the Investigation Team.[28]
The next night, the Midnight Channel comes on, though the image is too blurry to tell who might actually be on it. The Protagonist does have suspicions, though they are quickly questioned.[29] The night after, the Midnight Channel runs again, this time clear enough to distinguish who is on it- Naoto Shirogane.[30] The on-screen detective talks about an impending experiment to be broadcast on the Midnight Channel, promising to share the moment with the viewers should they continue watching.[31] The Midnight Channel then shuts off, leaving the Investigation Team to panic over what this means for the case.

The day after, the Investigation Team discuss Naoto, the Midnight Channel, and the case in general, coming to conclusions regarding the Detective Prince[32] and the overall case.[33] The group then enter the TV and Rise searches for Naoto using her Persona, though despite detecting the Detective Prince’s presence, she is incapable of finding him.[34]
Upon the Protagonist providing Rise the information necessary to locate Naoto,[35] she takes the Investigation Team to what seems to be a military bunker.
Once they reach the deepest level of the bunker, the Investigation Team find Naoto- as well as the Detective Prince’s Shadow. Unlike prior cases, Naoto appears to be in no state of emotional distress, with the detective’s doppelganger acting as prior victims of the case once had.[36] The situation escalates as Naoto confronts the Shadow directly, however, quickly becoming a far more recognizable scene.[37] The Shadow goes on about Naoto's insecurities regarding age and the role detectives play in society; only being appreciated so long as their services are needed and getting cast away as soon as the case is deemed solved.[38] As Naoto’s calm demeanor begins to crack, the Shadow continues on, revealing to the Investigation Team one final secret- the Detective Prince is actually a woman.[39] At this, Naoto finally breaks, denying that the Shadow is her,[40] and the Shadow transforms into a massive, flying robot resembling Naoto, which the Investigation Team fight.
Once the Shadow is defeated, Naoto stands before her other self and provides a far less mocking version of the Shadow's words.[41] After reassurance from her peers, Naoto finally faces her Shadow and acknowledges it as a part of her,[42] causing it to transform once again, this time into the Persona Sukuna-Hikona.[43] The Investigation Team take Naoto out of the TV World, where she displays symptoms of fatigue. Despite this, Naoto claims to be capable of walking home alone, though she is ignored as Yukiko and Rise take her home.[44]

October, 2011

Naoto fully recovers from the effects of the TV World on October 6, 2011, where she meets the Protagonist, Yosuke, and Chie in front of Yasogami High School. She thanks them for rescuing her[45] and asks to discuss the case with the Investigation Team.[46] They meet in Junes' food court, where Naoto recounts her kidnapping.[47] With this experience in mind, Naoto states that she believes that all cases in which the victim was kidnapped to have the same culprit- a man acting without accomplice.[48][49] However, the amount of time in-between being placed into the sack and thrown into the TV confuses her, as it seemed to be only a few minutes.[50] Considering everything, Naoto concludes that Mitsuo Kubo had only ever killed Kinshiro Morooka in an attempt to mimic the original two murders, though the question of why Mitsuo left these inconsistencies remains.[51] Before disbanding, Naoto asks to join the Investigation Team's effort to find the true culprit, as she has developed an attachment to the case.[52]
After school the next day, Naoto schedules a doctor's appointment for the Investigation Team to check for adverse effects of the group's activities in the TV World, as well as to discern what exactly Teddie is.[53] At the hospital, Naoto reveals that she had performed research on Shadows and Personas after her incident, though she did not find much of relevance.[54]

Later in October, the Investigation Team gathers on the rooftop of Yasogami High School after the Protagonist is sent a message by the culprit. Naoto urges the Protagonist not to tell his uncle about the letter, and states what she believes is the culprit's intent in sending the message- to tell the Investigation Team that he knows who they are.[55]
During Yasogami High School's culture festival, Yosuke enters Naoto into the beauty pageant event alongside the other girls in the Investigation Team. Unlike her peers, she sees no point in arguing about it, though she does express distaste in the idea of taking part in such an event.[56] When the day of the event comes, Naoto gets on stage alongside her peers. However, during the swimsuit competition chosen by Teddie as the reward for winning the prior crossdressing pageant,[57] Naoto decides to abstain, not appearing on stage at all. Despite this, she still wins the event, with "androgynous charm" being cited as the deciding factor.[58] After the event, she spends the night at the Amagi Inn with the rest of the Investigation Team.

November, 2011

When the Protagonist is sent another letter from the culprit, and is forced by his uncle to stay at the Inaba Police Department for the night, Naoto watches the Midnight Channel and recognizes Nanako Dojima on it. She acts quickly, informing Chie on the situation through a phone call as she runs from her home to the Dojima household to see if Nanako is okay.[59] Naoto reaches the home and calls Ryotaro Dojima to inform him on the situation.[60] Naoto comes to the Police Department alongside her peers who had yet to arrive, and reveals that she had conducted an investigation at the Dojima household, and that she had found no traces of a forced entry.[61] This confirms that the culprit is the same one as in prior cases, though something Nanako had said at the Amagi Inn regarding who she answers the door for provides Naoto with further insight on the circumstances of the case.[62] Naoto proceeds to bring up the time in-between being being grabbed and thrown into the TV, bringing up the possibility that the culprit had been taking a television with him in a vehicle, specifically a car one would not question the presence of.[63] Putting together the notion that Nanako was familiar with the culprit, and that they were utilizing an automobile one would not take special note of, the Investigation Team come to the conclusion that the perpetrator is likely a local delivery driver- an idea backed up by personal accounts from his victims.[64] With all this information, Naoto finally states who she believes to be the true culprit of the murders and kidnappings in Inaba over the past year: Taro Namatame.[65] The Investigation Team head to the shopping district alongside Dojima's police partner, Tohru Adachi, and find Dojima on the floor alongside his crashed car.[66] Naoto calls an ambulance,[67] and investigates the crashed delivery truck nearby, finding a large television in the cargo bed and a journal in the driver's seat, which she presumes is Namatame's.[68] Naoto reads the diary aloud, with those around her taking note of much of Namatame's writing.[69] Naoto goes to the hospital with the Protagonist to visit Dojima, where she promises that she and the rest of the Investigation Team will rescue Nanako, no matter how long it may take.[70]

Once Nanako is found in the TV World alongside Namatame, Naoto urges her peers to stay calm, as the situation could quickly turn disastrous should Namatame be provoked.[71] In an attempt to distract him from Nanako, Naoto asks Namatame questions regarding what he was trying to achieve by throwing people into the TV, though his cryptic answers implicative of the belief that he was doing the right thing anger the group further.[72]
After Nanako and Namatame are retrieved from the TV World, the Investigation Team take them to the hospital where they are both treated. Naoto blames herself for the situation being as dire as it is,[73][74] though she is talked out of the mindset by Kanji.[75]

December, 2011

After the Investigation Team discover that the fog coating Inaba is likely the result of the other world leaking into the city, they hold a meeting at Junes.[76] There, Naoto reads a summary of Namatame's career aloud, with some details regarding the case included within.[77] The Investigation Team discuss the end of the case, and the possibility that Namatame would not be convicted is brought up. Naoto confirms that it is not impossible that Namatame will escape punishment.[78]
Later that day, the Investigation Team go to the hospital, as Nanako's condition has gotten worse. Some time after arriving, Nanako passes away, and the group goes to Namatame's hospital room. There, they find him on the floor near an open window and they assume that he is trying to escape, though their yelling is interrupted by the Midnight Channel coming on the TV in the room.[79] Namatame's Shadow appears on the TV, with Naoto being the first to point out that Namatame had never faced his other self.[80] Naoto notes the room as being a luxury one, as the TV in the room is larger than what one would usually have in a hospital room. She mentions that because of this, Namatame could escape into the other world at any time, though she also suggests that the group should weaponize this by pushing him into the TV themselves- should Namatame enter into the other world, he would not be able to escape, and eventually, he would die.[81] The group bicker among themselves as some consider the idea, though the argument ends after the Protagonist tells everyone to calm down. Once they have, Naoto rescinds her prior words, stating that she was not thinking as she should have, as well as noting that they had not actually heard Namatame's perspective.[82] She also mentions a few reservations she has regarding this being the end of the case, but suggests that the group return another day to question Namatame, as he is not currently in a state fit for interrogation.[83] As they leave the room, Naoto elaborates on her doubts, stating that Namatame still doesn't seem to have a motive for the first two incidents in the case, the deaths of Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi.[84]

The next day, the Investigation Team meet at Junes again. Initially, the meeting is held to discuss Teddie, as he had gone missing the night before, but Naoto brings attention to the case, due to their limited time to investigate.[85] Naoto recounts what they know about the case, and tells the group that Mitsuo Kubo was officially acknowledged as a copycat killer after Namatame's arrest.[86] The conversation continues on, and the topic of why Namatame phrases certain things the way he does is brought up. Naoto theorizes that his use of the word "save" in reference to his actions towards all those he kidnapped could imply that Namatame intended to "save" them through death,[87] though they also entertain the idea that Namatame truly was intending to save them from something.[88] This line of thinking, however, calls into question why he would kill Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi if he were trying to save them, though they wonder if someone else could be involved in those incidents.[89] The Protagonist brings up the letters sent to him by the culprit, and call into question the wording the culprit used.[90] In the end, the group realize that it is possible that Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi were killed by someone seperate from Namatame, and they head to the hospital to interrogate Namatame so they can say for certain whether or not the theory is true.[91]
At the hospital, Naoto is able to get access to Namatame's room by using her affiliation with the police,[92] and she gets the rest of the Investigation Team access by tricking the officer on guard to leave his post.[93] Once the group is finally in the room, Naoto requests Namatame answer their questions regarding the case, and he does. After receiving some clarification on his motives for "saving" people, Naoto summarizes what she believes to be Namatame's line of reasoning, realizing that everything properly falls into place should Namatame be believed.[94] After answering more questions, Namatame tells the story of how he discovered the Midnight Channel at Naoto's behest,[95] clearing up all their misconceptions regarding Namatame's role and causing Naoto to realize that he truly was trying to save them. [96] Naoto apologizes to Namatame for their actions the previous night,[97] and the Investigation Team leave his room with the knowledge that another culprit had been the perpetrator behind the first two incidents in the case.[98]

The next day, Naoto is asks citizens around Inaba for clues regarding the first two murders alongside the rest of the Investigation Team, though the only real information discovered is that no suspicious individuals were ever seen around the victims. At a local restaurant later in the day, Naoto wonders how such a thing could even be possible, as the police had allocated an abnormally large number of personnel to investigate the first two murders.[99] Naoto tells the group all the criteria the culprit must fit in to work properly with the testimonies and evidence the Investigation Team had gathered, before going outside to give the matter more thought.[100] Yosuke and the Protagonist follow her, and they further discuss the matter. When the Protagonist states who he believes to be the true culprit, Naoto considers the possibility and mentions that she had felt something off about the man.[101][102] The three go back inside and tell the rest their theory, and Yukiko reveals that Adachi had been assigned to escort Mayumi Yamano when she was staying at the Amagi Inn.[103] Naoto also mentions that Adachi was the one who had interrogated Saki Konishi, and that he had done so several times despite her alibi.[104] With the link between the two victims now clear to the Investigation Team, Naoto suggests they ask Adachi directly, and finds that he is going to the hospital.[105]
Once they arrive at the hospital, they find Adachi quickly and question him. After a brief interrogation from the Protagonist, Naoto tells Adachi that they know for certain that Namatame is not the culprit behind the murders at the beginning of the case, and asks directly if he knows who the true perpetrator might be.[106] Upon Adachi accidentally revealing to the group that he is the culprit,[107] Naoto realizes what it is that has been bothering her about him and asks Adachi about it, and he runs away in response.[108] The group attempt to look for him, though as their search is fruitless they agree that it is likely he escaped into the other world.[109] As it would be unwise to enter the TV at the time, they decide to split up and search for him the next day.[110]

Upon finding him in the TV World, the Investigation Team question Adachi, and he tells the full story of the first two murders in the case. He also admits to having known about Namatame's attempts to save those on the Midnight Channel, and Naoto asks if he was the reason the police did not take him seriously.[111] He confirms that he did indeed take Namatame's call,[112] and that he had pushed him to begin his attempts to save people in the first place.[113] Naoto also questions Adachi regarding Mitsuo Kubo, and he finally confirms that Mitsuo didn't have the same powers he and Namatame had, as well as that he had thrown him into the TV in the first place.[114] After he disappears, Naoto suggests that the Investigation Team proceed as if they knew for certain that all of Adachi's claims were truthful,[115] and recommends that the group prepare before pursuing him.[116]
When the Investigation Team reach Adachi in Magatsu Inaba, Naoto is among the first to speak to the man, recounting every crime he had committed over the past year.[117] After Adachi transforms into something resembling a Shadow, Naoto interrupts his ramblings, defying everything the man said and sourcing all of his issues as stemming from how he has acted throughout life, rather than being due to how life is inherently, as Adachi had claimed.[118] When Adachi finally attacks, Naoto fights alongside her friends, encouraging them by saying that they will not lose if they work together.[119]
After Adachi is defeated, the deity responsible for all supernatural events throughout the past year, Ameno-sagiri, inhabits his body. Ameno-sagiri informs the group on the true nature of the Midnight Channel, saying that it exists only to show people what they had wanted to see.[120] Naoto believes the being's words, as the Midnight Channel that had appeared in Namatame's hospital room the night of Nanako's death had been bothering her since, though it makes sense to her should this explanation be fact.[121] Adachi transforms into Ameno-sagiri's true form and the battle against it begins, with Naoto fighting alongside the group just as she did before.
Upon defeating the deity, Adachi reappears, and the group have a brief conversation regarding the possibility of Ameno-sagiri controlling Adachi, in which Naoto states that she believes it was partially of his own volition.[122] After bringing Adachi out of the TV, Naoto handles most affairs with the police,[123] and leaves with the rest of her peers to see if Ameno-sagiri's defeat had brought any change to Inaba.

March, 2012

On March 20, 2012, Naoto comes to Junes' food court alongside the rest of the Investigation Team, as she had been feeling restless.[124] Alongside the rest of the group, she reminisces about the case, mentioning that Ameno-sagiri had provided them with their powers so that they can act as pawns in the deity's scheme.[125] After she mentions this, Chie wonders why the Protagonist was able to enter the TV before awakening to his Persona,[126] which leads Naoto to ask the Protagonist if he had met anyone suspicious during his first day in Inaba.[127] Naoto suggests that the group split up to search for clues, and that the Protagonist should contact them should he find anything of note.[128]
Upon the Protagonist discovering the true force behind the supernatural events of the past year, the group meet again at Junes, and Naoto mentions that both Izanami and Ameno-sagiri are names one would know should they be knowledgeable with ancient Japanese lore.[129] After connecting their information to Izanami, the group enter the TV to defeat her.
Once the Investigation Team locate Izanami, Naoto asks her to confirm their theories, a request she complies to.[130] As Izanami goes on, Naoto sees the sense in her views of humanity, though she decides not to give up alongside her friends.[131]

On March 21, 2012, the day of the Protagonist's departure from Inaba, Naoto comes to the train station alongside the rest of the Investigation Team to say goodbye. Before he gets on the train, Naoto tells the protagonist that she is unsure of what she should do, and tells him that he should call her whenever he wants to.[132] As the Protagonist's train departs, Naoto runs beside it on the station's platform with the rest of the Investigation Team, asking the Protagonist not to forget his time in Inaba as she does.[133]

October 8 - 10, 2011

On October 8, 2011, Naoto goes to the rooftop of Yasogami High School alongside the rest of the Investigation Team after being asked to meet up by Yosuke Hanamura. Initially, she wonders if progress in the murder case has been made, though after Yosuke mentions the weekend, Naoto asks if the group had been called for reasons related to an event at the police station that had been canceled.[134] Naoto is asked to elaborate, and she tells the group about an event the police were planning in which a famous idol would perform in Inaba.[135] Teddie and Yosuke reveal that Yosuke's father had intended to capitalize on the event with a sale at Junes, but the event's cancellation has left Yosuke's father stressed.[136] Naoto apologizes after hearing this, as she had heard that they cancelled the event due to her disappearance, though she is comforted by Yosuke.[137]
After the group agrees to perform alongside Rise Kujikawa in place of the idol that was meant to come, Naoto mentions that she has some experience playing an instrument, and states that she will do whatever she can to ensure a successful event as it was her kidnapping that had put the group in this situation in the first place.[138] The next day, Naoto practices alongside the rest of her friends, and suggests they take a break after a particularly poor recital.[139] After more practice, the Investigation Team show significant improvement, and Naoto states that things might not go poorly after all.[140]
On the day of the concert, Naoto is backstage with the rest of the group, though her silence causes Yukiko Amagi to ask her if she is okay.[141] Naoto responds by saying that her experience in front of large audiences is not applicable in this scenario, as mistakes in her performance as a part of a band would reflect on the other members in the group rather than just herself as a mistake would in an interview.[142] The group gets onstage and performs, with Naoto playing her keyboard to the audience's right.
Once they finish performing the song, the audience begins chanting for an encore, and Naoto tells the rest of the Investigation Team what options they have to respond as the rest of the group panics.[143]

February 11 - 13, 2012

Naoto joins the rest of the Investigation Team when they go on a ski trip in February, 2012. When skiing, Naoto wears a blue coat, black pants, and a white beanie, alongside black and gray ski goggles around her neck. On the first day of the trip, Naoto spends most of her time with Kanji Tatsumi, as it is her first time skiing.[144] Despite his instruction, she is still struggling, though she does hope to perform better in the future.[145] After more discussion, the group then return to the lodge they are staying at for the night.
After dinner, Naoto gathers alongside her friends in the lounge, though Teddie is absent. When the group begin telling ghost stories, Naoto expresses fear and attempts to disprove them,[8] though when Yosuke Hanamura tells a story about a girl dying and haunting those who had bullied her in life, she does mention that there could be some truth to what he said, as she had read of a similar case in the past.[146] As the group continue to tell stories, the lights suddenly turn off, scaring Naoto and causing her to scream.[147] When the group turn the lights back on to find Teddie eating their snacks, Naoto reprimands him alongside Chie Satonaka and Rise Kujikawa.[148]

The next day, the group continue their trip. When the idea of splitting up into partners as they did the day before is brought up, Naoto mentions that the point of the ski trip in the first place is to spend time with the Protagonist,[149] and when Yosuke recommends they all go together, Naoto agrees.[150]
When they finally begin skiing, Naoto resumes being taught by Kanji, though Rise and the Protagonist now join them. Rise mentions that Naoto's inability to ski surprises her, and asks if she is ready to go down the mountain, though Naoto says that she is not.[151] When the group see the rest of the Investigation Team race down the mountain, Rise suggests they follow, and Naoto protests.[152] Eventually, after watching Teddie slide down the mountain on his stomach, Naoto decides to walk the rest of the way down.[153]

Later in the day, before the sun sets, the Protagonist can ask Naoto to ski with him if the player chooses the correct dialogue option.[154] As they finish, Naoto mentions how tired she is, and that she still isn't able to ski very well.[155] She apologizes to the Protagonist and explains that, despite mountains being a common setting in murder mystery stories, they do not often happen in real life, so she has never had to learn skills required to traverse mountains quickly.[156] Naoto then asks herself when the last time she had tried as hard to learn something simply for the sake of having fun was, and reflects on how she was before meeting the Investigation Team.[157] As snow begins to fall harder, Naoto suggests the two return to the lodge, though she is uncertain which way that is.[158]
The pair get lost in a snowstorm as they attempt to return, and end up walking in circles. However, Naoto notices a cottage, and recommends that they go inside to stay warm.[159] As they find the door unlocked, the two enter, and Naoto provides a potential explanation as to why they were able to get in so easily.[160] She asks the Protagonist to check if he has service on his cell phone, as hers had run out of battery while they were lost.[161] Naoto then mentions that finding a heat source in the cabin should be a priority, though she recommends against warming each other with their bodies.[162] The two light a fire in the small fireplace in the center of the cabin and talk to each other to fill the time, with Naoto mentioning that she is actually enjoying the experience in some way, though she believes herself to be misattributing the source of these feelings.[163] However, the conversation ends prematurely when a TV in the corner of the room turns on, causing her and the Protagonist to investigate, though as they do, the rest of the Investigation Team enter the cabin. Naoto asks if the group had come to rescue them, as well as how long they had known where they were.[164] To dispel any confusion, Naoto and the Protagonist explain the situation in full, and Naoto denies that the two were in the cabin for any reason other than what they told the group.[165] Despite some skepticism, the group decide that Naoto would not lie about something like the Midnight Channel coming back, and decide to look into the matter.[166]

Alongside the rest of the Investigation Team, Naoto is pulled into the TV by Margaret, and she names the Haniwa all around the area as they acclimate to their surroundings.[167] She quietly listens to Margaret and the Protagonist as they explain the situation, though when Margaret mentions that Marie had come into the TV world of her own volition, she asks if she had the same Persona abilities as the rest of the group.[168] Later, Naoto confirms her belief that Margaret had brought the entire Investigation Team into the TV world so that they could choose whether or not to help the Protagonist find Marie and asks the Velvet Room attendant about her origins, though she makes it clear that where Margaret came from will not affect her decision to help.[169] After Margaret finishes explaining the full context of the situation, the group resolve to save Marie, though Naoto recommends they return the next day to do so, as they are currently unprepared.[170]
Back in the cottage, the Investigation Team discuss what they were told. Naoto calls into question Marie's motives to risk death in such a way, though she considers the possibility that Marie could have remembered something to cause her to shut herself away.[171][172] Naoto empathizes with Marie alongside the rest of the group, saying that she will be able to overcome her hardships if her friends are with her, just as they did before.[173] Before the group leaves, Naoto recommends the Investigation Team rest in preparation for saving Marie the next day, and also requests Teddie and Rise Kujikawa scan the other world.[174]

The next day, February 13, 2012, Naoto meets with the rest of the Investigation Team on the rooftop of Yasogami High School to discuss the situation. Naoto reveals that she had checked for missing people in the area, though her search was fruitless, concluding that Marie's disappearance truly does have nothing to do with the past year's murder case.[175] She also asks Teddie and Rise what they had found in the TV world, recalling Ameno-sagiri's words when Rise mentions a "hollow forest."[176][177] The connection between Marie and Ameno-sagiri causes Naoto to believe that rescuing Marie will not answer all of their questions, though they have no way to learn more without talking to Marie directly.[178] Naoto and the rest of the Investigation Team then return to the cabin from the night before and enter the TV to save Marie.

Upon finding Marie in the Hollow Forest's Memories of Meeting, Naoto attempts to de-escalate the situation, though Marie interrupts her before she can finish.[179] Marie explains why she had sealed herself away in the Hollow Forest, and Naoto replies by saying that she does understand Marie's thought process, though she cannot agree with it.[180] After further attempts to calm Marie down fail, the group attempt to stop her forcefully, and Naoto joins the rest of her friends in doing so.
After Marie casts Shell of Denial, her will to fight fades, and she resumes talking to the Investigation Team rather than fighting them. Marie claims to hate the group, though Naoto points out that the scenery in the Hollow Forest would not make sense if that were true, as it was made from Marie's mind.[181] After more explanation and discussion, Marie buries her consciousness inside of her and allows the fog to inhabit her body, transforming into Kusumi-no-Okami. The Investigation Team then fight Kusumi-no-Okami in the hope that defeating her while Marie is buried away will save her completely.

After successfully saving Marie, the Investigation Team exit the Hollow Forest. When Marie expresses confusion at the group, Naoto recommends that she try to befriend them, as all of them want the best for her.[182] Naoto leaves the cabin with the rest of the group, and they all go to the Amagi Inn afterwards to celebrate Marie's return.

Summer, 2012

When the Protagonist returns to Inaba during summer vacation, Naoto appears, wearing an entirely new outfit. She now wears a sleeveless, collared white shirt over a blue undershirt, also without sleeves, alongside dark blue pants. Additionally, her characteristic newsboy cap is no longer present, and a necklace with a silver ring attached to it can be seen around her neck. Naoto has also stopped binding her chest, and her hair has grown to go down the length of her neck.

Naoto is first seen alongside the rest of the Investigation Team as they try to surprise the Protagonist at Junes. After the Protagonist spots Teddie and Yosuke Hanamura hiding, Naoto states that she had known some issues would arise in their plan,[183] and when the topic of everyone's appearance comes up, Naoto mentions that none of them can remain the same forever, a sentiment other members of the group agree with.[184][185]
Alongside the rest of the group, Naoto goes to the Dojima household for lunch, mentioning that everyone in town seems to have a more positive outlook on life than when she had first arrived in Inaba as they eat.[186] After Nanako Dojima asks them to, Naoto and the rest of the Investigation Team welcome the Protagonist back to Inaba together.

Trivia

  • Early in development, Naoto was originally designed as a short, attractive boy detective[188] and Teddie was going to be revealed to be a girl under the mascot outfit.[189] These two were eventually swapped, with Naoto being a girl and Teddie being a boy under the bear outfit.
  • Naoto was designed with the image of a "young detective boy" in mind, which, according to character designer Shigenori Soejima, is the reason behind Naoto's signature blue newsboy hat.[190]
  • In her Yasogami High social media profile in the 2009 setting book, Persona Club P4, Naoto says she has a lot of detective novels due to her line of work, she likes putting herself in danger,Naoto responds that, similar to smoke, she likes high up places. This is from the saying "馬鹿と煙は高いところが好き", meaning that fools and smoke both like high places. Smoke naturally rises to a high point, but fools do not; they would have to climb up there and endanger themselves on purpose. she dislikes how wasteful society is, she is uncomfortable with women's clothing (especially revealing clothing), and she enjoys working with machines and has been doing so since she was little. For gender, she would prefer not to answer. The social groups Naoto has joined are "Linux Fans", "DIY PC Builders", "Fans of Mystery Novel Narrative Tricks", and "Beginner Fashionistas". Naoto's inbox has a message from Rise about going to get a bucket ice cream parfait tomorrow. [191] She has the same likes and dislikes in her Arena Ultimax remastered profile, and also lists reasoning/logic as one of her special skills.[192]
  • Naoto is speculated to be half-British.[193]
  • Naoto has solved 24 cases as of September 2011.[194]
  • Naoto is a fan of the computer operating system Linux.[195]
  • Some of Naoto's alternate color palettes in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax are meant to be references to other characters in the Persona series and from other Arc System Works properties.

Notes

  1. Naoto turns 16 on April 27, 2011, which is after Persona 4 starts but before Naoto is met in-game. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth and Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth take place during the events of Persona 4, so Naoto is the same age in those entries.
  2. Naoto would have turned 17 on April 27, 2012, before Persona 4 Arena which takes place in May 2012. Persona 4 Dancing takes place later that year, so Naoto would be the same age then. Persona x Detective Naoto is set approximately one year after the end of Persona 4[2] and ends on April 12, before Naoto's birthday has passed.

Published by Atlus.
  23. "Naoto Shirogane: No particularly embarrassing experiences come to mind... Would discussing my life be fair game? It's the rare situation like this that gives me call to speak of such things. / Yosuke Hanamura: Damn... Way to kill the mood... / Naoto Shirogane: The Shirogane family has been detectives for generations now. We lend our powers to the police from time to time. / Chie Satonaka: For generations? Wow, it's like that guy from a movie I watched before. What was his name... Kuzu...noha? / Naoto Shirogane: In days gone by, when there were no crime scene investigators, consulting detectives were considered more valuable. Thus, my grandfather still has a strong connection with the police and looks after me, despite my youth and inexperience. But investigators nowadays are well versed in science and medicine, so I must further my studies." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  24. "Naoto Shirogane: Well then, it's your turn now. A straight answer, please. What is your true involvement with the murder case? / Yosuke Hanamura: You know, you're so good at killing the mood that it's almost funny... / Yukiko Amagi: Weeeeell, we go rescuing people who've been kidnapped by jumping into the TV! And theeen, we do stuff like, "Persona!" with our Personas and beat the crap outta Shadows... / Yosuke Hanamura: Y-You idiot... / Naoto Shirogane: *sigh* Are you making fun of me?" Persona 4. 25. "Announcer: First, congratulations to you and the police for your recent arrest of the culprit. It was well-known that there were a lot of mysteries surrounding this case, and you did a great job clearing them up. / Naoto Shirogane: I'd hesitate to say that the matter is "cleared up," as such. It's true that our suspect was behind Mr. Morooka's unfortunate death. But when I cast my eye over the case as a whole, I detect a few things that seem out of place. / Announcer: Oh... Like what?" / Naoto Shirogane: Unfortunately, I cannot divulge details at this time. But this matter claimed the life of three people. Hence, I believe even the smallest inconsistency must be investigated." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  26. "Naoto Shirogane: Good morning. I've been waiting for you all. There's something I need to discuss with you regarding the case." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  27. "Naoto Shirogane: First, as regards commonalities between the victims, all of them were kidnapped before they were murdered. The victims were all locals who had been the focus of recent media attention, becoming suddenly well-known... That is the most likely scenario. I don't believe there's anything intrinsically unique about the victims themselves. ...Haven't you all come to the same conclusion? / Protagonist (Dialogue option): Yeah, we did. / Protagonist (Dialogue option): I plead the fifth. / Naoto Shirogane: Then, allow me to state my point. Will you admit that a number of you fit these identical circumstances? There was a long interval between the second and third deaths in this case. But after I applied the aforementioned criteria, I discovered several similar disappearances had taken place. Yukiko Amagi. Kanji Tatsumi. Rise Kujikawa. All of you disappeared shortly after being shown on TV... Either you escaped death somehow, or you faked your own disappearances in order to divert attention from yourselves... Since some of you had ties to the victims, there came a point where I suspected one of you must be the culprit. / Chie Satonaka: You thought one of us was the killer!? You can't be serious! / Naoto Shirogane: This was a prior theory, since discarded. Putting together everything I've learned until this moment, I believe exactly the opposite. You aren't the culprits. You may, in fact, be the only ones with the means to pursue the true perpetrator... Seen as a joining of forces between the rescued, everything falls into place. ...Of course, this is all speculation. There is in fact a flaw with this theory. It doesn't account for the third incident... Mr. Morooka's murder. He has never been broadcast on television, and neither did he ever disappear. We must also consider the condition of his corpse. The first two victims are still listed with an unknown cause of death... But Mr. Morooka died of an easily identifiable blunt force trauma to the occipital cranium." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  28. "Naoto Shirogane: The police have not satisfactory resolved this discrepancy, yet they are desperate to close the case. Further action will be necessary to obtain some sort of decisive evidence. / Chie Satonaka: Further action...? What do you mean? / Naoto Shirogane: Well, whatever the outcome... the evidence should come to light. ...You said something interesting to me not long ago. / Yosuke Hanamura: Hey, where are you going? / Naoto Shirogane: This is not a game for me either..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  29. "Yosuke Hanamura: Did you recognize who appeared just now? / Protagonist (Dialogue option): Wasn't it Naoto? / Yosuke Hanamura: Naoto? Why would he show up on TV?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.

  31. "Naoto Shirogane: Welcome to "Experiment of the Century: The Genome Project." I will be experimentor and experimentee both in a forbidden yet wonderful bodily alteration process! You shall witness my departure into a new realm... The moment of a new birth! From the chosen day forth, I shall walk a completely different path in life...! And I will share this glorious occasion, this memorable day, with all of you! Do stay tuned!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  32. "Yukiko Amagi: Of course! That's why Naoto-kun appeared on the news so suddenly! He said something didn't seem right, and that he wasn't convinced. He also believed that people who are kidnapped appear on TV first, remember? / Yosuke Hanamura: Wait, you're saying... he's using himself as bait!? We came to the same conclusion he did, about how people who became famous through TV would disappear. Could he be trying to prove the theory using himself...?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  33. "Yukiko Amagi: I get it now…! I remember Naoto-kun mentioning this! He said it was strange that the police were able to identify the cause of Mr. Morooka’s death! / Yosuke Hanamura: Then is King Moron the only one Mitsuo killed…!? That’d explain why there were no signs of King Moron being thrown into the TV… The killer didn’t change his methods for King Moron… It just seemed that way ‘cause it was done by someone else!" 35. "Rise Kujikawa: Did you find out more about Naoto-kun? / Protagonist (Narration): You told Rise about Naoto being treated “like a child”... And you explained Naoto’s abnormal obsession to solve the case. / Rise Kujikawa: I see... So he’s being stubborn about the case... But it seems like it’s rare for Naoto-kun to get so worked up over something. Okay… I’ve got a good feel for him. I think I can do this. It won’t take long for me to find him with my Persona, so be ready to follow me once I do!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  36. "Naoto Shirogane: Ah, it’s about time you arrived. Dealing with this child has been quite a pain… / Other Naoto: No! No, no, don’t go! / Naoto Shirogane: It’s useless speaking with you. I need to go back now… / Other Naoto: Why? Why’re you leaving me here!? Why am I always left alone!? It’s so lonely… I don’t wanna be alone!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  37. "Naoto Shirogane: You wear the same face as me... It's as if you're implying we're one and the same. But the difference between me and you is... / Other Naoto: Why delude yourself? I am you." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  38. "Other Naoto: The fools all say it, don’t they...? “You’re only a child,” “Keep out of our business, kid,” and so forth. No matter how many cases you spend hours cogitating over, no matter how many crimes you solve, you’re a child in their eyes. It’s your brain they’re interested in. The grey matter locked up in that skull. As long as they need it, you’re an ace detective! But once you’re done, it’s back to the playpen with you. You haven’t the means to deal with society’s two-faced nature... You’re just a lonely child. / Yosuke Hanamura: Naoto... / Other Naoto: I wanna be a big grown-up... I wanna be a big boy right now... Then they’ll see who I am... I... I want a reason for me to stay... / Naoto Shirogane: That’s enough. I can find my own reason for living... / Other Naoto: Hah... I’m telling you that’s impossible. You are but a child. How can you change that essential truth?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  39. "Other Naoto: Now then! Our analysis is complete. Let us begin the body alteration procedure. You have no objections, do you... “Naoto” Shirogane? / Naoto Shirogane: Stop it! / Other Naoto: “Naoto”... Such a cool, manly name! But a name doesn’t change the truth. It doesn’t let you cross the barrier between the sexes. How could you become an ideal man when you were never male to begin with...?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  40. "Other Naoto: After all... I am you. / Naoto Shirogane: That's not true!!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  41. "Naoto Shirogane: I lost both my parents in an accident. I was still young, so my grandfather took me in. I was inept at making friends... so I spent my time reading detective novels in my grandfather's study. / Other Naoto: When I grow up... I'm gonna be an awesome, hard-boiled detective...! / Naoto Shirogane: My parents were proud of their job. I had no qualms about following in their footsteps... An inherited occupation can feel stifling to many, but I welcomed it. I yearned for the day I could be a detective myself... Perhaps I inherited that desire from them as well. I was always alone... Seeing that, my grandfather must have believed it was his duty to help me realize my dream. I secretly aided my grandfather with his clients... And before I knew it, people started calling me Junior Detective. At first, I was delighted. But not everything went so smoothly... / Yukiko Amagi: What was that you said about "You're only a child..."? / Naoto Shirogane: Not everyone welcomes my collaboration when it comes to solving cases... My status as a "child" was sufficient to offend many of those whom I worked with. Were that the only issue, it would have resolved itself with time... But though I will one day change from a child to an adult, I will never change from a woman to a man... / Yukiko Amagi: Do you not like being a girl...? Is that why you always dress like a boy? / Naoto Shirogane: My sex doesn't fit my ideal image of a detective... Besides, the police department is a male-oriented society. If they had the slightest "concrete" reason to look down on me, no one would need me anymore..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  42. "Naoto Shirogane: I'm sorry... I kept ignoring you, pretending you didn't exist. But you are me... and I am you. You've always been inside of me. What I should yearn for... No, what I must strive for isn't to become a man. It's to accept myself for who I really am..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  43. "Protagonist (Narration): The strength of heart required to face oneself has been made manifest... Naoto has faced her other self... She has obtained the facade used to overcome life's hardships, the Persona Sukuna-Hikona!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  44. "Yukiko Amagi: I'll take her home. I don't think she can go back by herself. / Naoto Shirogane: It's... all right... I can... / Rise Kujikawa: No way, missy! Don't think that doing everything on your own is the "adult" thing to do! C'mon, let's go. Grab on!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  45. "Chie Satonaka: Are you feeling better now? / Naoto Shirogane: Yes, thanks to all of you. I'd like to thank you once again for what happened." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  46. "Naoto Shirogane: That aside, I'd like to discuss the case with you all. We're dealing with a kidnap-and-murder case perpetrated by someone lurking in this very town. And it isn't over yet... Let's go over the finer points after school." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  47. "Naoto Shirogane: First, I heard the doorbell ring. But when I opened the door, I saw no one there... Just as alarm bells sounded in my mind, someone grabbed me roughly from behind and covered my mouth with something. Immediately afterward, I was put into something like a sack and most likely carried on the culprit's shoulder." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  48. "Naoto Shirogane: And going by the surrounding circumstances, my kidnapping and everyone else's were near identical... There is no question that the culprit is the same in each case." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  49. "Naoto Shirogane: Judging by their actions and body type, I'd say the culprit is definitely a man. I heard no conversations or voices, so I believe he is acting alone." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  50. "Naoto Shirogane: I felt a single impact, which I assume is when I was thrown inside the TV... But the time from kidnapping to that point seemed too short... It was a matter of minutes." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  51. "Naoto Shirogane: Mitsuo Kubo's only victim was Mr. Morooka. It was a copycat killing that mimicked the culprit's method. / Yosuke Hanamura: No wonder King Moron's death broke the pattern in so many ways... / Naoto Shirogane: The question remains, though, as to how Kubo learned of that world. / Chie Satonaka: That's it! That's what was bothering me! Mitsuo could enter the TV, right? Then why didn't he kill King Moron that way?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  52. "Naoto Shirogane: But this is no longer a mere job, or someone else's affair. I want to know the truth of why we were targeted. Please allow me to join your effort. / Protagonist (Dialogue option): Of course. / Naoto Shirogane: Thank you very much. I'll do my best, Leader." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  53. "Naoto Shirogane: No... Rather, I'd like to have a doctor examine Teddie. / Yosuke Hanamura: A doctor? / Yukiko Amagi: You mean a vet? / Naoto Shirogane: The normal kind, actually. If you're free, I've scheduled a checkup for him after school today. A thorough physical examination might be a good first step in figuring out what exactly Teddie is. And I thought it might be a good idea for the rest of us to get checkups as well. We should see if the fog over there or the power we've gained have had any negative effects on our health. Since you all have been active on the other side far longer than I have, you should definitely be examined. / Yosuke Hanamura: Negative effects!? D-Don't drop scary stuff on us like it's nothing... Yeah... I never even thought about that. / Naoto Shirogane: I've arranged to have Kanji-kun and Rise-san looked at as well." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  54. "Naoto Shirogane: I performed my own research after the incident. "Persona" and "Shadow" are common psychological terms. Of course, the ones we're familiar with don't quite fit those definitions. This is what was written in an unofficial project document I happened to come across. A Shadow is suppressed power, and when controlled by someone's ego, it becomes a Persona... / Kanji Tatsumi: It becomes a Persona...? What, does that mean they're basically the same thing? Then again, all those Shadows we beat the shit out of did turn into Personas... Ahh, who cares about the details... It doesn't matter what they are. If they get in our way, I'll crush 'em. / Naoto Shirogane: Still, I couldn't find any information on how they're related to the other world." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  55. "Naoto Shirogane: Senpai... Dojima-san is trustworthy, but it may be best to keep this to ourselves. He will ask why you received such a letter, and if he were to put you under surveillance, our hands would be tied. If this letter is real, what's most important isn't what it says... It's the fact that it was delivered to the Dojima residence, adressed directly to you. This means that the culprit knows in great detail who has been interfering with his crimes... And of all of us, he chose to deliver his message to the Dojima residence, home of a police detective." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  56. "Naoto Shirogane: We're in an awkward position... If we can't refuse, I suppose there's no point in arguing the point... But it seems ill-fitting for someone like me to get up on stage... I wonder if there's any way I could take it up with the school authorities..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  57. "Teddie: I decree that one of the judging criteria later this afternoon will be... Tadaaaaa! A swimsuit competition!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  58. "MC: Grand prize goes to...! Ms. Naoto Shirogane! Her androgynous charm seems to have won most of the girls' hearts." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  59. "Chie Satonaka: Wasn't that Nanako-chan on the Midnight Channel just now!? How could it be her...!? / Naoto Shirogane: I know what you're thinking, but... Nanako-chan does fit the pattern. She wasn't seen... but she was heard. / Chie Satonaka: What!? / Naoto Shirogane: Do you remember the politician who visited a local school, and made the news several times? In those interviews, he always quoted a particular student he spoke with. The child became well-known while remaining anonymous... That girl was Nanako-chan! A reporter who took interest in this released her photo and interview using her real name in today's evening paper. But even before that... This is a small, rural town. Her identity must have been circulating for quite some time. / Chie Satonaka: Oh my God... / Naoto Shirogane: I should've realized it much sooner... But I was hung up on the idea of people who were "shown" on TV... It didn't occur to me that this would qualify... / Chie Satonaka: Wh-What're we going to do? Nanako-chan's home alone right now, isn't she!? / Naoto Shirogane: I'm on my way there as we speak to check on her! Yosuke-senpai is headed to the police station! He said he called Kanji-kun too. They'll explain the situation there. / Chie Satonaka: Alright, I'll join them right away! And I'll let Yukiko and Rise-san know! / Naoto Shirogane: Yes, please do!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  60. "Yosuke Hanamura: Naoto's on the phone, calling from Nanako-chan's... I mean, your house. / Ryotaro Dojima: Shirogane!? You there? What the hell's going on!? / Naoto Shirogane: I'm at your house right now. The front door's open and there's no one inside. ...I'm afraid that Nanako-chan has been kidnapped by our serial killer. Surely you must have known, Dojima-san!? The case isn't over yet!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  61. "Naoto Shirogane: Now. Consider that the front door at Nanako-chan's house was open. I examined it, and found no trace that entry had been forced." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  62. "Chie Satonaka: You mean... Nanako-chan opened the door herself!? / Naoto Shirogane: Precisely. The culprit didn't sneak in. He boldly came up to the front door and pressed the doorbell. / Yukiko Amagi: Like how it was for all of us... / Tohru Adachi: U-Umm... "For all of us"? / Naoto Shirogane: But the circumstances are different for her, as compared to us. Remember what Nanako-chan said when we were at the hot springs? "I always do what my dad tells me, like not opening the door for strangers."" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  63. "Naoto Shirogane: We know for certain that the culprit must be using a large-screen TV. / Tohru Adachi: Huh...? TV? What? / Naoto Shirogane: Each victim was taken at a different scene, yet was thrown into a TV almost immediately after being kidnapped... I would go so far as to say that it took place in front of their houses. Therefore, the culprit must be taking a TV with him as he goes. / Yosuke Hanamura: You think he's using a car? / Naoto Shirogane: Given the efficiency of the culprit's methods, I would assume a vehicle larger than a sedan. However... No unusual vehicles have been sighted. I'd expect someone to notice, since most of the victims vanished during the day..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  64. "Rise Kujikawa: So it's someone Nanako-chan knows, who has a car... But it's a car that can't be seen? / Yukiko Amagi: I think we can rule out the possibility that no one happened to see the vehicle... Especially since it's happened so many times now. / Chie Satonaka: A car no one would notice...? Is there such a thing? What would it be...? / Protagonist (Dialogue option): A delivery truck. / Kanji Tatsumi: That's right... Now I remember... A delivery came! It was a delivery truck! / Rise Kujikawa: No one looks twice at a delivery truck, no matter where it's parked... / Naoto Shirogane: And if it were a local company, it'd be the same deliveryman every time so he's not a "stranger" to Nanako-chan. She must've received packages from him during the times she was home alone, meaning we wouldn't know his face." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  65. "Tohru Adachi: Maybe you're not too far off base... Dojima-san put this stuff together to reinvestigate the first case- the murder of that announcer. And there's a deliveryman mentioned right here... I better go tell Dojima-san! / Naoto Shirogane: After resigning from his last job, he took up the family delivery business... Before that, he was... a council secretary! Taro Namatame! / Yosuke Hanamura: The enka singer's husband!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  66. "Naoto Shirogane: An accident...? *gasp* / Tohru Adachi: Dojima-san! A-Are you alright!?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  67. "Naoto Shirogane: Hello? We need an ambulance, quickly. There's been an accident. One adult male is injured..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  68. "Yosuke Hanamura: Oh yeah, maybe there's clues in the truck! / Tohru Adachi: Wait, you can't! We need to preserve the scene! / Naoto Shirogane: Then allow me. If it rains while we wait, the information will be lost regardless. / Chie Satonaka: Look! There really is a TV in there! / Naoto Shirogane: Yes, large enough for persons of any size to fit through. I also received a diary from the driver's seat... Most likely kept by Namatame himself." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  69. "Naoto Shirogane: "I learned the existence of a new world. Thus, I must save people..." / Kanji Tatsumi: "Save"? The hell's he mean by that? / Naoto Shirogane: *gasp* This... It's a list of all the victims' home adresses! Mayumi Yamano, Saki Konishi, Yukiko Amagi, Kanji Tatsumi, Rise Kujikawa... Even the victims who survived and were never released to the public are written here. I note that Mr. Morooka's address is absent from the list... / Tohru Adachi: Wow... Then that settles it. / Naoto Shirogane: The last date is today's... "I can't believe such a small child appeared on it. I must save this child, no matter what." / Chie Satonaka: Is that... about Nanako-chan!? / Naoto Shirogane: "I managed to take her to safety. The police have been active lately... This will probably be the last time I write in this diary. I've done everything I can..."" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  70. "Naoto Shirogane: We will rescue Nanako-chan at any cost. It may take some time, but you must put your faith in us and wait for us to return with her." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  71. "Naoto Shirogane: Calm down, Kanji-kun! We can't predict his behavior! We have to keep him talking. If we can discern his intentions, perhaps we can somehow deal with him." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  72. "Naoto Shirogane: No, we must pull his attention away from Nanako-chan! You put the people you saw on the Midnight Channel into this world. Am I correct? / Taro Namatame: They all... want to be saved... / Rise Kujikawa: ...Did i ever ask you to save me? / Kanji Tatsumi: And you didn't save us, dammit! It was the exact opposite! / Taro Namatame: If I hadn't put you in the TV... how would you have ended up...? / Yukiko Amagi: How would we...? / Rise Kujikawa: Are you trying to say... we wouldn't have been able to face ourselves? / Yukiko Amagi: What...!? But we nearly died! / Taro Namatame: Yes... Exactly... / Yosuke Hanamura: You kidnapped them... Yes or no? / Taro Namatame: Yes... / Naoto Shirogane: Why did you target local residents who became known through media? Why do those people appear on the Midnight Channel? / Taro Namatame: On rainy nights... on TV... they signal me... to save them... / Yosuke Hanamura: You keep saying save this and save that... Are you saying murdering people is your idea of saving them!? / Taro Namatame: Murder...? No, I'm saving them..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  73. "Naoto Shirogane: A deliveryman named Namatame... The possibility of Nanako-chan being targeted... If only I'd been more thorough in putting the facts together...! Then Nanako-chan wouldn't have had to go through this..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  74. "Naoto Shirogane: Why did I waste time listening to what Namatame had to say!? If I hadn't tried to engage him in conversation, and we'd rescued Nanako-chan immediately...! This wouldn't have happened...!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  75. "Kanji Tatsumi: *sigh* Alright, enough of this pity party... Is standing around and whining really what we oughtta be doing now? Feeling pathetic, consoling each other... That gonna solve anything!? We gotta believe in her... So stop rehashing what's already done. Get it together, Naoto! / Naoto Shirogane: Sorry... You're absolutely right." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  76. "Kanji Tatsumi: Wha--!? G-Guys, put on your glasses! / Protagonist (Narration): When you put your glasses on, your vision becomes much clearer... / Yukiko Amagi: Woah... It's all clear... / Yosuke Hanamura: Wh-What the hell is going on!? / Naoto Shirogane: These glasses are meant to help us see through the fog in the other world... But putting that aside, no glasses would help improve one's visibility in a fog, under normal circumstances. / Chie Satonaka: Then, umm... Could the fog from over there be leaking into our world...? Huh? Y-You guys think that's it!? I-I was kinda expecting you to ignore it as Chie being random again... I-It's just a thought... Haha... / Protagonist (Narration): The mood darkens... / Yosuke Hanamura: Anyways... Today's the last day of exams, right? Let's get 'em over with so we can meet up at the special headquarters after school." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  77. "Naoto Shirogane: There's another item of note here... A summary of Namatame's career, with details about the case. "...The suspect was having an affair with the first victim. It seems she was killed due to relationship troubles. Also in April, Ms. Saki Konishi's body was discovered. The police are looking into a motive for the murder. In July, a boy living in Inaba performed a copycat murder. The boy was initially thought to be the culprit behind all the killings, but later suspicion was thrown upon Namatame. Last month, the suspect attempted to kidnap a seven-year-old girl of Inaba, resulting in his arrest..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  78. "Yukiko Amagi: Also, I heard before that if police don't have enough hard evidence, it's difficult to build a case. / Naoto Shirogane: Yes... There are many such cases and culprits. It's the eternal conundrum for crime investigators... / Kanji Tatsumi: So even if they're caught... the law can't do shit? / Naoto Shirogane: ...It's a possibility." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  79. "Protagonist (Narration): The window in the room is wide open... / Protagonist (Dialogue option): What are you doing? / Taro Namatame: I-I was scared... So I... I... / Yosuke Hanamura: You have your life... and now you want your freedom, too!? / Chie Satonaka: It's your fault that Nanako-chan's...! / Taro Namatame: I-I, I didn't, I... / Rise Kujikawa: 12 o'clock... Is it the midnight channel?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  80. "Naoto Shirogane: No... Come to think of it, Namatame never faced his other self. And we didn't witness his Shadow returning to his body as a Persona, either... Perhaps that's why we're seeing this now..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  81. "Naoto Shirogane: This must be a luxury suite. Most hospital wards don't have such large televisions... Why, with something like this in the room, this man could escape at any time... Although once he enters... he may find there's no way out..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  82. "Naoto Shirogane: You're right... We should calm down and think rationally about this... I realize now we've heard almost nothing from Namatame's perspective... There's no denying that this man brought great harm to Nanako-chan... But other than that point, the rest comes from our assumptions based on watching the Midnight Channel a moment ago. I won't deny that we were blinded by the heat of the moment... trying to impute all responsibility to him rashly." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  83. "Naoto Shirogane: Truthfully, not all the hitches that were nagging at me have been answered yet. We'll have to see what he can tell us about them... ...Though it appears he's in no condition to do so at the moment." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  84. "Naoto Shirogane: The police speculated that the first murder was related to the affair, so they called Namatame in for questioning... But everything in his testimony and his bearing... No matter what they looked at, they found nothing suspicious. If he truly is twisted enough to believe that murder is a means of saving people, I think that would have shone through... / Yosuke Hanamura: Maybe he faked it real well. Or maybe he started out with a normal motive, and got a taste for killing after the first time. / Naoto Shirogane: No... If that were the case, his motive for killing the announcer would be even more inexplicable. Namatame and his wife were separated at the time. Both Misuzu Hiiragi and himself testified that she had discarded him. Hiiragi also knew about Yamano beforehand, and Namatame was shocked to hear of Yamano's death. Their relationship was known, and was not strained to the point of murder... There's simply no motive in the affair angle. The police invested a great deal into investigating this point. Therefore, we have no convincing motive for Namatame to kill Mayumi Yamano... Although... Her name was written in Namatame's own diary..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  85. "Naoto Shirogane: I'm worried for Teddie myself, but let's trust in him and await his return. Right now, we must concentrate on this case. It won't be long before Namatame is transferred to another location. We must hurry, or we will miss our only chance to get his perspective on this." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  86. "Naoto Shirogane: Let's quickly review the facts. Of all the victims, only two were killed: Ms. Yamano, the announcer, and Saki-san. From the documents we found in the car, we know Namatame had some sort of dealings with them. After that, there were multiple attempted murders, in which we were targeted... It was only after he took Nanako-chan that we caught him in the act, identifying his modus operandi in the process. / Kanji Tatsumi: When I hear you put it like that, sounds like the dude's guilty. / Naoto Shirogane: As a result of Namatame's arrest, the police admitted that Mitsuo Kubo was a mere copycat killer." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  87. "Yosuke Hanamura: When he talks about "saving" people, what does that actually mean? I don't think there's any doubt that it includes kidnapping people and throwing them into the TV. / Naoto Shirogane: Could he mean... saving them through death...? He did call himself a "savior," and saif that the other world is a "wonderful world."" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  88. "Yukiko Amagi: There's something I've been wondering about for a while. When we first encountered him, he said... "You're the ones I saved. Don't worry, I'll save this little girl too..." So, um... If he "saves" people by killing them, did he save us too? Wouldn't he actually have failed to save us...? / Naoto Shirogane: You raise a good point. If he thinks that salvation comes only through death, his words to us make no sense... And another thing... The Namatame who appeared on the Midnight Channel said that he failed to save Nanako-chan. / Chie Satonaka: Well, maybe he really was trying to save the victims by putting them inside the TV. C-C'mon, don't get all quiet like that.... You guys know I just say the first dumb thing that pops into my head... Haha... / Naoto Shirogane: The possibility that he truly intended to save us all..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  89. "Yosuke Hanamura: But he's still the one who threw in Saki-senpai and that announcer, right!? Sure, we haven't nailed down his motives, but that doesn't change the fact that he killed them. Or what, you think someone else was involved? What makes you think so?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  90. "Protagonist (Narration): The possibility of a culprit besides Namatame... Could there be something that proves this possibility...? / Protagonist (Dialogue option): The warning letter. / Yosuke Hanamura: Warning letter...? Oh yeah... Whatever happened to that thing? / Chie Satonaka: If Namatame's the killer, he must have been the one who wrote it, right? / Naoto Shirogane: Let's review them. / Protagonist (Narration): You recall that the first warning letter said, "dont rescue anymore"... And the second one said, "if you dont stop this time, someone close will be put in and killed"... / Naoto Shirogane: Yes, that's right. / Rise Kujikawa: Isn't that kinda odd? Would someone who thinks he's saving people by killing them write stuff like "don't rescue" or "kill"? / Kanji Tatsumi: Yeah, and the "will be put in and killed" part doesn't make sense either. If the killer was writing it, wouldn't it be more like "I'll put in and kill"?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  91. "Yosuke Hanamura: Someone else... Then... It wasn't Namatame that killed Saki-senpai and the announcer? / Naoto Shirogane: We can't say that for certain yet... We urgently need to speak to Namatame face to face..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  92. "Naoto Shirogane: I'm a consultant with the police. I'd like a few words with Namatame-san. May I go in? / Policeman on guard: This is unit 252 requesting confirmation on an ID... Name of Naoto Shirogane... Huh? Ah, understood. I see. Well, you're on the list... I can give you a few minutes, but I'll have to record your conversation with him for security purposes." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  93. "Policeman on guard: This is unit 252. Huh...? I see... / Naoto Shirogane: Has something happened? / Policeman on guard:' Something about a suspicious object out in the lobby... / Naoto Shirogane: Ah. Well then, this works out nicely. You should back up your colleagues downstairs. We'll keep watch over Namatame-san. A disturbance in a hospital lobby, after all... It sounds serious. / Policeman on guard: If anything happens, hit the nurse call button. I'll leave the rest to you. / Naoto Shirogane: Understood. Please be careful. I knew they were undermanned, but I didn't expect it to go this smoothly... / Chie Satonaka: Wow... / Naoto Shirogane: There's nothing much inside that "suspicious object." So he won't be gone long. / Yosuke Hanamura: Alright, then now's our chance to talk to Namatame!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  94. "Naoto Shirogane: Then tell me if my estimation is correct so far. After discovering the Yamano and Konishi incidents, you realized an appearance on the Midnight Channel meant certain death. Thus, to "save" her from that fate, you kidnapped Yukiko Amagi... You couldn't let her be killed, so you threw her into the TV, preventing the killer in this world from reaching her... And you repeated the process, as more individuals appeared on the Midnight Channel... It all falls into place. His body is weak, but his mind is sound. He's trying to tell us the truth..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  95. "Naoto Shirogane: Please... Tell us everything you can... Calmly and slowly. / Taro Namatame: You're willing to listen... to my story...? All right..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  96. "Naoto Shirogane: You really were trying to save people..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  97. "Naoto Shirogane: We must apologize to you as well. Had we let our emotions blind us to the truth, we would have piled all the responsibility on you." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  98. "Naoto Shirogane: It's all clear now. He never committed any murders... It was another party who threw the first two victims into the TV." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  99. "Naoto Shirogane: The police had an unusually large number of officers in their initial investigation of the first two incidents. To find facts that even they overlooked would be difficult indeed, now that over half a year has passed. There wasn't a single report of suspicious persons being witnessed to begin with..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  100. "Naoto Shirogane: But there must be someone in town who meets all the criteria for this case. The killer must have a connection to both Saki-san and Ms. Yamano... As well as be in a position to observe our actions periodically, to some extent... Finally, it must be someone who could approach Senpai's house without arousing suspicion... ...I need some fresh air before I give it more thought. I'll be outside." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  101. "Naoto Shirogane: Detective Adachi... ...... A member of the police force... That is an interesting approach. It would certainly explain the lack of witness reports... It's the same reason no one ever reported seeing Namatame's truck. / Yosuke Hanamura: This is a small town, so everyone must've known who he is. And since he's a detective, people definitely wouldn't have thought of him as being suspicious. / Naoto Shirogane: In fact, he could use his position to his advantage and hide critical information." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  102. "Naoto Shirogane: Actually... Regarding Detective Adachi... I'm not sure how to put it, but there's something that's been bothering me about him for some time now..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  103. "Yukiko Amagi: When Ms. Yamano was staying at our inn, the media were swarming all over it. That's when Adachi-san arrived, saying he had been assigned to guard her..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  104. "Naoto Shirogane: Detective Adachi also questioned Saki-san, the one who found the announcer's body, on numerous occasions. I heard it was because there was so little information about the case at the time, but... It's certainly unusual to question someone with so strong an alibi as hers multiple times..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  105. "Naoto Shirogane: Detective Adachi is headed to the hospital to prepare for Namatame's relocation. We must head there at once!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  106. "Naoto Shirogane: Just one more thing, please. We know for certain now that the first two murders weren't Namatame's doing. Someone else killed them. Adachi-san... Do you have any idea who that might be?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  107. "Tohru Adachi: We already know Namatame's the one who put them all in!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  108. "Naoto Shirogane: I see... Now I finally understand. To tell the truth, Adachi-san, I've been fixated on something you once said. Before, I didn't know why... Only that it sounded a wrong note to me. Do you recall when I read Namatame's diary at the scene of Dojima-san's accident? At the time, I said "Even the victims who survived and were never released to the public are written here." And in response, your words were, "Wow... Then that settles it." How, I wonder, does that "settle" anything? At the time, the police had no idea that there had been other attempted murders related to the case... You had no reason to say such a thing. After all, there are countless examples of people disappearing for a few days... Yet when I read the list of names, you raised no objection. Odd, that. What do you say to that, Detective Adachi? / Tohru Adachi: I-I don't know! I-I said I'm busy...! / Kanji Tatsumi: Wait, you son of a bitch!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  109. "Naoto Shirogane: He was cornered... It's highly probable that he escaped there. If he does indeed turn up on the other side, that should prove without a doubt that he is the true culprit." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  110. "Protagonist (Narration): You split up for today and you all went back home..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  111. "Naoto Shirogane: Namatame said the police refused to take him seriously... You were responsible for that, then." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  112. "Tohru Adachi: The rest of the force had their hands full with the double homicide, and it happened that I was the one who took the call." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  113. "Tohru Adachi: Oh, I have an idea. If you really want to save her that much... Why not do it yourself? Like... You could shelter her somewhere. Some place where no one could find her. / Taro Namatame: Where no one could find her...? / Tohru Adachi: Save her yourself... You can do it." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  114. "Naoto Shirogane: Then... you mean to say that Mitsuo Kubo's disappearance was your doing as well? I did sense something odd in his course of action... If he had special powers and wanted attention, why resort to a regular copycat crime? But that wasn't the case... Kubo had no such powers. In fact, he was thrown in by you... Am I correct? / Tohru Adachi: It had been a while since I last put someone inside the TV, so I really got a kick out of that one." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  115. "Naoto Shirogane: The rest of his confessions were consistent. We'd best proceed under the assumption that it's no lie." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  116. "Kanji Tatsumi: Bring it on! Let's go kick his ass, right now! / Naoto Shirogane: Wait! I suggest we prepare ourselves first. We can't let him stab us in the back, ever again... We must face him with all the power at our disposal, and defeat him without fail!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  117. "Naoto Shirogane: Allow me to confirm the crimes you've committed thus far. You had suspicions that this world was dangerous, yet you threw Mayumi Yamano into the TV. Knowing full well that Ms. Yamano died here, you did the same to Saki Konishi. / Tohru Adachi: *sigh* / Naoto Shirogane: Not only that, but you duped Namatame into taking over your murder attempts, while you watched like a spectator at a game. When the disappeared stopped dying, you sent a warning letter to ensure more victims. Even when a copycat killer arose, you had the gall as a detective to eliminate a suspect under investigation. Two people died in the last six months, and a young girl is now in critical condition... But that's not all. If at any turn something had gone wrong, many more would have succumbed... ...All for some foolish "excitement", like a criminal reveling in the chaos he creates!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  118. "Naoto Shirogane: People can't live alone. If you give in and sever your ties to human society, it will naturally become hard to live in. Yet you refuse to face life and admit your fault, running from your own humanity like a coward. And though you claim to find life troublesome, you caused nothing but trouble for many others! Your twisted logic is that of an immature, egotistic brat!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.

  121. "Naoto Shirogane: I have to say, it must be true... The Midnight Channel we saw in Namatame's hospital room... That kept bothering me since. What we saw there wasn't Namatame's true intentions after all... / Yukiko Amagi: Then... it came on because we were all thinking, "This person must be the killer, he can't be forgiven"? / Naoto Shirogane: Ngh... We let ourselves be deluded..." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  122. "Chie Satonaka: You think... it was controlling Adachi-san? / Naoto Shirogane: Who can say...? I believe it was at least partially his own intention as well." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  123. "Policeman: Greetings, Shirogane-san. We got word from Detective Dojima. He's wanted on suspicion of murdering Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi, right? / Naoto Shirogane: Correct. / Policeman: Understood. We have an ambulance waiting downstairs. Should we have them bring the stretcher up here? / Naoto Shirogane: An ambulance... / Policeman: Detective Dojima assumed one would be necessary. He wanted the suspect to be carefully taken into protective custody. It... Well, it was a personal favor to him. / Chie Satonaka: They were partners, after all... / Tohru Adachi: ...... / Naoto Shirogane: Then yes, please have them bring up the stretcher. / Policeman: Understood." 127. "Chie Satonaka: So you think the person Adachi mentioned, the one who told him about the Midnight Channel, is that conductor? Uhhh... Did I strike gold again? I-It's seriously just something that popped into my head! / Naoto Shirogane: Senpai, is there anything like that you can think of?" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  128. "Naoto Shirogane: Let's go out into town. We might find something. Although... you may be the only one capable of noticing it. Please contact the rest of us, should you come across anything." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  129. "Naoto Shirogane: Izanami.. And Ameno-sagiri... Those names would be familiar to students of ancient Japanese mythology." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  130. "Naoto Shirogane: You granted certain individuals the power to enter the TVs. You created the Midnight Channel as well. And lastly, you started a rumor about the Midnight Channel to raise its public awarenes... Is this correct? / Izanami: All save one point. This "Midnight Channel" you speak of... It is indeed a device to draw hearts into this world... But it was always your individual wills that would determine what appeared on it. Humans ache to expose their suppressed sides, while the prying eyes around them are curious to see them laid bare. The want to show, and the want to see... I granted a "window" that catered to both. That is all." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  131. "Naoto Shirogane: I must agree that the vast majority of people are exactly as you say. / Chie Satonaka: But we don't intend to live that way. / Kanji Tatsumi: If we were fine with the world you're making, we'd never have come this far, dammit. / Yosuke Hanamura: We'll keep searching for the truth and figuring out who we are, as we go on with our lives. / Rise Kujikawa: We all will.. Together." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  132. "Naoto Shirogane: Um... I can't quite decide what to do... At first, I only planned on staying here until the case was completely closed. Maybe I should stick to my original plan... and take the train back with you, Senpai. Kidding, of course... I couldn't do something like that. It's not as though we'll never see each other again. Feel free to call me anytime, even if there isn't a case to solve." Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  133. "Naoto Shirogane: Please don't forget about us over there!" Persona 4. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  134. "Naoto Shirogane: Was there some kind of progress in the case? / Yosuke Hanamura: I need you guys! You have to help me! You're the only ones I can rely on! Can you please keep this weekend open...!? / Naoto Shirogane: This weekend... Does this have anything to do with the event at the Inaba Police Station that's been canceled?" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  135. "Chie Satonaka: What're you talking about? / Naoto Shirogane: The idol Kanami Mashita was scheduled to be the honorary Chief this Sunday." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  136. "Teddie: There was going to be a big sale at Junes to take advantage of the event, but now it;s down the tubes! / Yosuke Hanamura: It's no joke! The police took forever to decide on cancelling the event. My dad's really in a fix now. He worked so hard to put this whole thing together, and I can't stand to see him like this... I can't just let it go." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  137. "Naoto Shirogane: I heard the police couldn't prepare for the event because I had gone missing. I'm sorry... This is my fault. / Yosuke Hanamura: Nah, it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself... But yeah, it does seem like that's what happened." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  138. "Naoto Shirogane: I have some experience playing the keyboard. My grandfather suggested that I take piano lessons when I was younger. I have one that I can bring as well. / Chie Satonaka: You're up for this!? / Naoto Shirogane: This incident is a result of my actions, after all. I will do whatever I can to help." Persona 4 Golden. 143. "Crowd: Encore! Encore! / Kanji Tatsumi: Th-They're askin' for an encore... / Rise Kujikawa: Oh yeah... I didn't think about that... / Chie Satonaka: We only know one song! What do we do now!? / Naoto Shirogane: There are only two things we can do: ignore them and leave, or play the same song over again..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  144. "Yukiko Amagi: So this was your first time skiing, Naoto-kun? How was it?" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  145. "Naoto Shirogane: I can barely even stand upright. Kanji-kun is teaching me, but... It's not going as I'd hoped. I keep going in the wrong direction or falling over without warning. I hope I do a little better tomorrow." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  146. "Yosuke Hanamura: Let's see... It was over three years ago. A friend of mine in middle school told me this. It seems his sister went to some prestigious private school, but she ended up running with the wrong crowd. Supposedly, she and a bunch of other girls were bullying another girl in her class. He said that she'd come home every night and laugh over the phone with her friends about the kid they were harassing. One day, she suddenly came home with a pale face. Ever since then, she started locking herself up in her room. No matter how much he asked what was going on, she'd completely ignore him. But he could hear her mumbling... She'd keep saying to herself: "It's my turn next"... My friend got worried, so he went to ask his sister's friends what was going on. But it turns out... All her friends had passed out for mysterious reasons and had been taken to the hospital... He was so scared that he didn't know what to do. That night, at around 11:30... Suddenly his sister started screaming in her room! He ran into her room, and she was covering her ears and repeating, "She's calling me! I can hear her...!" But my friend couldn't hear anything, and soon, his sister rushed out of the house... The next morning, she was found unconscious outside the school gates, just like her friends had been. In the end, she was taken to the hospital and recovered, but when he asked the people at school what happened... It seems that the girl they were bullying... was dead. They said that the girl must have become a spirit that haunted them one by one... / Chie Satonaka: Aaaaaaaaaah! / Yukiko Amagi: Eeeek! Ahaha! / Naoto Shirogane: Th-That's impossible! Your story is full of inconsistencies! ...Wait, but I think I've actually read a police report like that..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  147. "Naoto Shirogane: Waaaaaaaaah! / Rise Kujikawa: A-A blackout!?" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  148. "Yosuke Hanamura: H-Hang on! Where's the switch... / Teddie: Hooooow daaaaare yooooouuuu... To think you're eating all the snacks while I'm gone... I'm gonna currrrrse yoooooouuuuu! / Chie Satonaka: Get him? / Rise Kujikawa: Yeah, let's finish him off. / Naoto Shirogane: I'm sorry, Teddie... Only people have human rights." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  149. "Naoto Shirogane: Ahem... Th-The reason we're on this trip is for us all to make some good memories of spending time with Senpai! In other words, we should all be trying to have some skiing time with him!" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  150. "Yosuke Hanamura: Let's all enjoy the slopes together. Okay? / Naoto Shirogane: Th-That would be best! I concur!" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  151. "Rise Kujikawa: I'm kind of surprised. I didn't think there was anything you weren't good at, Naoto-kun. How's it going? Do you think you're ready to start going for real? / Naoto Shirogane: No... Not at all..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  152. "Rise Kujikawa: I'm so jealous that they can snowboard! People who are good at it can look so cool... But I'm definitely more into skiing with you right now, Senpai! I feel bad that we're in other people's way, so shall we get going? / Naoto Shirogane: P-Please, wait! Can't you stay with me until I reach the bottom...? I have no idea which way I'll end up going... / Rise Kujikawa: Okay! Last one there's a rotten egg! See you at the bottom! / Naoto Shirogane: W-Wait, weren't you listening!? I can't turn or stop!" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  153. "Kanji Tatsumi: What the hell's he doin' now!? He's not even wearing skis! / Teddie: Rrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaarh! / Naoto Shirogane: ...I think I'm going to walk." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  154. "Protagonist (Narration): The sun is going to be setting soon... Should you ask someone to accompany you down the slope...? / Protagonist (Dialogue option): Ask Naoto / Protagonist (Narration): You decide to ask Naoto to ski with you..." Persona 4 Golden. 156. "Naoto Shirogane: I'm sorry, you must hate having a total beginner hold you back like this. I've always been able to pick up new skills when they become necessary, but I've never had to ski before... Murder mysteries may take place in snowy mountain retreats in novels, but it's not that often in real life. Cutting a telephone line in a mountain cottage during a blizzard is obviously suicidal, too." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  157. "Naoto Shirogane: I wonder how long it's been since I last tried so hard to just have fun... I used to think that these... frivolities were a waste of time. That they wouldn't make me any better as a person. Haha... Though, thinking back on it, I have to laugh. I was all alone then." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  158. "Naoto Shirogane: Shall we start heading back? The snow's starting to fall quite heavily. Which way should we be headed to get back to the lodge? Oh, well... I thought I was simply following you today, so I wasn't checking on our course..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  159. "Naoto Shirogane: A-Ah...! Look! Isn't that a cottage!? Thank goodness... Even if that place is empty... There should be things there. We may be able to get ourselves warm. ...Let's go check it out!" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  160. "Naoto Shirogane: It was unlocked... I wonder why though. Some places don't use padlocks, because they've been known to freeze shut in extreme conditions..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  161. "Naoto Shirogane: Um... Do you happen to have your cell phone? I tried making numerous calls while we were lost, and my phone's battery has run out... / Protagonist (Narration): You do have your cell phone... If there's a signal, you may be able to call for help... The screen reads "No Service"... It seems there is no signal here..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  162. "Naoto Shirogane: But this still isn't good... We may be indoors, but the cold is a very real threat. ...... B-By the way, um... Warming each other with our bodies... w-would be ineffective in our case! Th-That only works when your clothes are wet, or one person's body temperature has been significantly lowered..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  163. "Naoto Shirogane: Strange... We're in a pinch, but some part of me is actually enjoying this. All alone with each other, stuck in a mountain cottage for an entire night... ...... Yikes... I think this feeling is referred to as the "suspension bridge effect"..." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  164. "Naoto Shirogane: ...You came to rescue us, correct? Actually, since when were you all outside? Don't tell me you've been here the entire time...?" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  165. "Protagonist (Narration): You desperately explain what happened just now... / Yosuke Hanamura: Huh... So, you got lost, found this building, and then things started "heating up." / Naoto Shirogane: You obviously aren't listening to what we're trying to tell you. The TV turned itself on, even though it isn't plugged in. Since the Midnight Channel is no more, we need to investigate! There's no way we'd risk ourselves to come to this stupid little shack just out of some impure motives!" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  166. "Chie Staonaka: Then again, I don't think Naoto-kun would lie about something like this. And since we're all here, we might as well check out this TV." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  167. "Yukiko Amagi: Oh! These are... / Naoto Shirogane: Haniwa, it would seem." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  168. "Margaret: I do not think that this is the same situation. I believe Marie's disappearance is unrelated to the "kidnapping incident" you all were following. She was not taken away by someone. Rather, she came here of her own volition. / Naoto Shirogane: She willingly came here... Does that mean Marie-san has the Persona ability as well?" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  169. "Margaret: The path ahead will be relentless. You alone will not be able to reach her... If you wish to see her again, then it is my role to help you. And to do so, I invited everyone who has accompanied you on your journey... here. / Naoto Shirogane: ...I see. I was wondering why you didn't bring just our leader here... Now I understand. You're giving us all the information and letting us choose what to do from here... You aren't here to stop us. / Margaret: Exactly. / Naoto Shirogane: One more thing... Well, this isn't going to affect whether or not I plan to help, but... You are also like Marie-san? A... "resident of this side?"" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  170. "Kanji Tatsumi: What else? That Marie chick is in here, right? If she's in danger of being attacked by Shadows, then we've gotta get in there and find her. / Naoto Shirogane: Hold on. It might not be that simple. Let us leave for now, at any rate. We cannot blindly run ahead so suddenly. / Yosuke Hanamura: ...Yeah. Plus, we're totally unprepared, right? If we're gonna do it, let's get ready and take this on full-force!" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  171. "Naoto Shirogane: ...The issue here is Marie-san's motive. Why would she risk her life to shut herself in a place like that?" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  172. "Naoto Shirogane: Maybe she remembered something that made her do that." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  173. "Naoto Shirogane: No matter how much we hated ourselves, we were able to face it and accept it. Because... we had our ear friends." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  174. "Naoto Shirogane: ...We should devote day to it. Teddie, Rise-san, can you scan that world? From the usual spot, of course. The rest of us should rest up to prepare for the exploration... If there are Shadows in there, then we can't avoid fighting them." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  175. "Naoto Shirogane: First, allow me to report. Just in case, I've checked for missing people in the local jurisdiction to see if anyone may have wandered in there. Zero results. There are no missing person requests, either. It seems that this place really doesn't have anything to do with our previous "case."" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  176. "Naoto Shirogane: ...Considering that none of us could find evidence, perhaps it's safe to say that no one has wandered in accidentally. But more important is whatever Teddie and Rise-san found. How did your search go? / Rise Kujikawa: I can feel that "Hollow Forest" really far away, but that's it." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  177. "Yukiko Amagi: "Hollow Forest"... We heard that phrase before... In the last battle, right? Naoto Shirogane: I was wondering the same thing. Ameno-sagiri mentioned it. The place that gave birth to those who answer the "desires" and "wishes for lies" of humans... Was that it?" Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  178. "Naoto Shirogane: ...Our objective is to save her, but it doesn't seem like things will end there. If she is related to those monsters, then we need to do more research. What is she trying to do? Who is she, really? It seems we have no choice but to go see her and find the truth directly from her." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  179. "Naoto Shirogane: Marie-san, please listen. Even if you are one of those creatures, that's still no reason for you to end your own life. The two Sagiri have been defeated. That means you're-- / Marie: "Free"? Is that what you think? That's not true... I'm not like you. I don't have freedom." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  180. "Naoto Shirogane: Yes... Now we know the true reason of why she hid herself in the Hollow Forest. ...Of course, I cannot agree with the conclusion she's drawing." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
  181. "Naoto Shirogane: Everything in this world is the product of someone's mind. This place is yours. This tomb, and the flowers all over it... Your resolve to die is what created this scenery. / Marie: ......! / Naoto Shirogane: However... On the way here, we saw things that don't fit a grave. Junes and the Souzai Daigaku signs, the bench on the hill, the electric poles, mirrors, school desks. It's all from the town... The home of the people you say you hate so much." Persona 4 Golden. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus.
