Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is a 2009 role-playing game for the Nintendo DS, and the sixth entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series. It was co-developed by Atlus and Lancarse, published by Atlus, and released on October 8, 2009 in Japan, and on March 23, 2010 in North America.
After a scientific research team at the south pole reports the appearance of a giant black void and then goes missing, an Intergovernmental Body sends a team to enter the void, dubbed the Schwarzwelt. The Schwarzwelt is predicted to expand continously and consume the whole world, unless the protagonist and their team can successfully infiltrate it and discover how to neutralize it.[1] After a blast crashes their ship into the void, they find the Schwarzwelt to be a setting infested with demons.
Strange Journey is a "side-story" in the Shin Megami Tensei series,[a] but is still officially considered to be part of the mainline series as it shared the same developmental staff.[2][3]
A remake of the game containing additional content and story changes, titled Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, was released for the Nintendo 3DS.

Gameplay
The gameplay of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey continues the gameplay traditions of the previous entries such as first-person dungeon crawling and turn-based combat. Battles also take place in a first-person perspective and is similar to the older Shin Megami Tensei titles, this time incorporating the weakness exploitation system that the series is known for. The dungeon crawling sections include large areas with puzzles, secrets and demons. The player is able to recruit these demons through negotiation which is the main source of team building. These large maps include materials known as Forma which can be used to craft items and equipment. Strange Journey also introduces the App System through which the player can develop various apps that alter their experience.

Strange Journey was co-developed by Lancarse, who also co-developed the first two Etrian Odyssey titles.[4] The game was built based on the Etrian Odyssey engine.[5] The development started around late 2007, the goal was to create a hardcore RPG specifically targeting the core fans of the Shin Megami Tensei series.[6] The game's setting was inspired by an sci-fi survival drama.[7]
Trivia
- The earliest draft for this game was a plan for a battle royale between human, demon, and Manikin in the world of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne.[8]
- Kazuma Kaneko claimed that this game is the fourth main entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series.[9] He also claimed that it was not planned as a numbered title from the beginning.[10] Later, he stated on his Twitter that it is a spin-off.[11]
- Eiji Ishida claimed that Kaneko suggested making this into Shin Megami Tensei IV,[12] but he refused to do so due to the pressure of delivering a numbered title.[13]
- MegaTen Maniacs claimed that the developers sees this as practically identical to a mainline game, even though it is classified as a Gaiden.[2][14]
Nomenclature
The subtitle was initially Strange Horizon, inspired by the film Event Horizon. However, it was ultimately changed to Strange Journey, inspired by the rock band Journey, the documentary film Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who, and the novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne.[15][16]

Notes
- ↑ The specific word used in Japanese is "gaiden" (外伝), which can also translate to "spin-off."

- ↑ "Zelenin: The Schwarzwelt is a natural phenomenon that arose in the South Pole some months ago. But this phenomenon is one of a kind. We have nothing of it's like to compare it to. You may have heard false reports that it is a blizzard, but in truth...It is an unknown spatial anomaly that destroys and absorbs it's surroundings as it enlarges. When it first appeared, it was a cylinder only one meter in diameter that stretched to the sky. Since then, it has spread radially, swallowing surrounding observation bases and any investigators whole. Today, it occupies a sizable footprint with a radius of several hundred kilometers. As we speak the Schwarzwelt continues to expand...If we cannot engineer a reversal of the process, then it will inevitably swallow the Earth." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (Nintendo DS). The relationship between demons and humans is clearly more similar to that of the main series than the other works in the 'Persona' series. Although 'Shin SJ' is a gaiden, it was created by the same staff as the numbered series, so it is not surprising that it is a gaiden. It is therefore positioned as a work included in the history of the '25th anniversary' of the series." MegaTen Maniacs, Nobuyuki Shioda. Published by Atlus. Japanese. p. 122.
