Shin Megami Tensei

Stephen sends out files of the Demon Summoning Program to as many computers as possible, and the plot is kicked off when the protagonist receives one on his computer. Upon meeting him in person for the first time, he explains that he created the Demon Summoning Program, but the technology moved to the wrong hands, and he sought to send it to as many people as possible in the hopes the power would be distributed more evenly if it were to be released at all.[citation needed] Stephen aids the player and modifies his Demon Summoning Program to expand inventory multiple times.

Shin Megami Tensei II

Stephen is first encountered in a Virtual Battler in a gym in Valhalla. Sensing that a new conflict will arise and put the people of Tokyo Millennium at the mercy of demons, he infiltrated the virtual space to discreetly distribute the Demon Summoning Program to capable persons, giving Aleph the ability to summon and command demons through his COMP. Every few major progressions of the plot Aleph is meant to go to a Virtual Battler to receive the latest upgrade to the program from him.

In the Makai, Stephen briefly appears to connect the Terminal stones to the rest of the Terminal systems to allow saving and teleporting to other areas.

In Aleph chooses the Neutral path, Stephen involves himself in the main plot. After Aleph is cast out of Eden for the second time, Stephen will appear to Aleph to advise that he focus on stopping Lucifer before Satan. After the party kills Lucifer and is on their way to stop the Kuzuryu, he will be waiting in the Underground to teleport them directly to the dragon, and after it is slain, he teleports them aboard the Megiddo Ark to stop Satan as well, waiting in the terminal room should Aleph want to use a terminal to save or perform fusion.

Visionaries

Stephen is featured in one Visionary cutscene in the Game Boy Advance and iOS versions of the game.

In "Silver Necktie Pin", Stephen is in the virtual space and remarks about how useful the Demon Summoning Program is. He then speaks about how the Center refuses to understand that as time passes and people move on from the previous cataclysm, demons will keep coming, and their attempts to keep them at bay with only the sheer might of their authority will not last much longer. He says that while they view their Messiah Project as an advancement of humanity, they have put too much of their self-interests into the project, which, though it may seem normal to those who side with the Law, will eventually cause the Law to go out of control and revert to Chaos, though the same applies to Chaos; Chaos will eventually get too strong and turn into Law. Between these two alignments is the balance of the world, so Stephen, viewing balance as necessary for humanity to advance in the first place, continues to update the Demon Summoning Program to keep this balance in check, though he amends his wording, thinking that it may be more accurate to say his updating of the program is a result of the balance being kept. In either case, Stephen says that the world must keep moving forward and comments that he has achieved the ability to exist beyond the limits of space and time. As he witnesses countless more battles as time goes on, Stephen wonders if he will eventually recall who he used to be, and as he ponders that, he remarks how useful the summoning program is.

End of spoilers.

  1. Translation: "Itou: [...] The famous theoretical physicist Hawking downright denied God’s existence. His theories start from that point. He became a sensation in the West because he said God wasn’t the one who created the Universe and everything was based on physical principles. He maintained in his books that the Universe wasn’t created by God, but even if we Japanese read the translations of his works, we think this is something obvious. The Japanese aren’t monotheists, so that train of thought is interesting to us. We had Steven appear in the Shin Megami Tensei series in order to visually present that ideology." "Interviewer: And the ever-elusive wheelchair-bound inventor of the Demon Summoning Program Professor Stephen, I’m assuming he was based on renowned physicist Stephen Hawking. / Ryūtarō Itō: Indeed he was. Professor Hawking is known for using physics to refute the notion that the universe was created by God, an idea that still has much support in Europe and America.
