Biography
Early Life
Kaneko was born on September 20, 1964 in the Fukagawa neighborhood of Tokyo, Japan. His parents owned a sushi shop,[1] where he occasionally worked, and his family residence was located nearby.
He started drawing because his parents rarely had time to play with him.[2] As a child, Kaneko gained an interest in the occult from television specials about aliens, ghosts, and Uri Geller's alleged psychic powers.[3] Wanting to be popular, he started to take an interest in fashion. He went to discos, joined the Takenoko-zoku, and even got an afro hairstyle. After graduation, he applied to a design company but was rejected because he had never studied art professionally. To study drawing, he joined an animation subcontracting company.[4]
Kaneko claims to have always been good at drawing, and that his teachers would enter his drawings into contests without his permission.[5]
Career
Kaneko started his career as an animator in the 1980s, working for a studio that primarily subcontracted American cartoons like The Transformers, Inhumanoids, and GI Joe.[6][7] He also worked on several Japanese anime, including Windaria and Ninja Senshi Tobikage, where he was credited under the name Kazuhiro Kaneko.[8][9] Kaneko has worked in the animation industry for about three years,[10] but the number of TV animations decreased in the late 1980s,[4] and he also felt underpaid and creatively unfulfilled as an animator and decided to move into the video game industry; the success of the Famicom helped create demand for artists and designers, and video game companies were seeking new talent.[7] He was a fan of RPGs and enjoyed Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, so he applied for a job at Atlus and joined the company in February 1988.[5][11] According to Kaneko, he truly became passionate as an artist when he got the chance to work on Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II.[12]
During his tenure at Atlus, he also contributed to games for other companies with their approval. He illustrated designs for the following: Devil May Cry 3 by Capcom and Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner by Konami. According to Kaneko, he also created the concept, plot outline, and sample character designs for the game Kabuki Rocks and brought the proposal to the company Red Entertainment.[13][14]
In 2023, Kaneko joined the company Colopl, Inc.[5] Although he was mentioned as a member of Atlus in a Persona 20th anniversary interview in 2016,[15] in 2026, he mentioned that he left Atlus during the development of Shin Megami Tensei IV.[16] Earlier in 2025, he also stated that it had been about 10 years since then.[17]
Personal Life
His favorite food is curry, his favorite cigarette brand is Lark, his favorite coffee is Georgia, and his favorite clothing brand is Jean Paul Gaultier and Katharine Hamnett.[18]

Kazuma Kaneko claimed that he checked the completed 3D model, but wasn't involved during the modeling process.[25][26] He is credited as a Demon modeling supervisor in Persona 4, Persona 5, and Persona 5 Royal; however, according to him he has not had involvement with the series since Persona 2.[27][28] He is also credited for original character design in Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation, but he claims he didn't work on it at all.[29] Despite being credited as Graphics Supervisor for Devil Children Red Book, Devil Children White Book, and Devil Children Light Book and Dark Book, he claims that he had very little involvement with those games beyond creating new Frost variant designs.[30]

Trivia
- Kaneko has mentioned several of artists who influenced his artstyle.
- He was inspired to incorporate the distinctive black lip into his artstyle by an unspecified manga artist he liked. He believed it would give his art a unique flair.[31]
- Yoshiaki Kawajiri and Yasuomi Umetsu, the character designer for Shin Megami Tensei: Nine, influenced how he drew eyes.[32]
- According to him, the character Alex DeLarge from the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange may also have been a subtle influence.[33]
- Other artists he has mentioned as influencing him include: Go Nagai, Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori, and Tomonori Kogawa.[34][35]
- Books he has mentioned influenced him include: Takekurabe by Ichiyō Higuchi, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima, and Shunkinshō by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki.[36]
- He cited Devilman, Black Jack, and Tensai Bakabon as manga that influenced him in an interview with 週刊TV Gamer.[37]
- Kaneko's favorite Shin Megami Tensei game is Shin Megami Tensei if....[38]
- According to Kaneko, he has no favorite demon design because they're all his favorites; however, his favorite demon as a figure is Lucifer.[39]
- According to Kaneko, his alignment is Dark-Law.[41]
- In past interviews, Kaneko has referred to both the Sumerian goddess Inanna and the Abrahamic God YHVH as the origin of the concept of "god". However, according to him, these were simply frames of references he used for entertainment purposes, not his genuine beliefs.[42]
- Kaneko once faced criticism that Trish from Megami Ibunroku Persona was an imitation of Trish Una from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but he asserted that his announcement came first.[43][44][b] He also denied that Persona were inspired by Stands in the manga.[45] The similarities between these two works led to a conversation with Hirohiko Araki,[43][46] where he revealed that Persona was born from the concept of using Demons as Guardians.[47] He has also denied that some of his Demon designs were influenced by Hirohiko Araki's art, claiming instead that they just share similar tastes.[48][49]
- On the other hand, Kazunari Suzuki claimed that Kaneko was a fan of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and was influenced by it when creating Persona.[50][51]
