Yosuke Hanamura
Yosuke Hanamura is a character in Persona 4. He is a second year at Yasogami High School, and is among the first people the Protagonist meets in Inaba.
Profile
Yosuke is a 2nd year student at Yasogami High. He moved to Inaba around six months ago when his father became the manager of the local Junes.[6] Some people in Inaba resent Yosuke and his family due to the perceived threat of Junes closing local businesses. That did not stop people like Chie Satonaka and Saki Konishi, who got to know Yosuke before the story began, with Chie lending him a DVD she loves and Saki being a fellow part-timer at Junes. He meets the protagonist on their first day of school, riding past him on his bike and crashing into a trash can. The two end up in class 2-2 together alongside Chie and Yukiko Amagi.
The sudden news of Saki's death on April 15th shocks Yosuke and motivates him to explore the TV World, thinking that the strange place is somehow connected. He forms a friendship with the protagonist and starts calling him his partner as they work with Chie and Teddie to solve the mystery of the TV World, the Midnight Channel, and the recent deaths. He becomes the second in command of the Investigation Team under the protagonist and helps try to figure out clues and patterns about the murderer and the victims.
Outside the investigation, Yosuke is somewhat self-deprecating in his remarks about himself. At other times, he has various schemes like bringing swimsuits on the camping trip or putting the idea of a group date cafe in his class's head for the culture festival that he pats himself on the back for. Yet, these things never quite go as he expects them to and usually backfire on him.
Yosuke has dyed hair[7] and is usually seen wearing his headphones with his school uniform and casual clothes. In the TV World, he also has a pair of rectangular glasses with orange trim. From the start, Yosuke was designed as a person who could speak for the otherwise silent main character. As this role was similar to Junpei Iori's in Persona 3, the staff jokingly called him Junpei during development. In order to separate him from Junpei, Hashino asked Soejima to make Yosuke look pretty. Soejima also wanted to use Yosuke's design to emphasize that he comes from the big city, so he gave him headphones and messy dyed brown hair that made him look different from others in Inaba.[7]

Reason: Only covers up to Yosuke gaining his Persona |
On April 12th, the protagonist witnesses Yosuke crash his bicycle on the way to school. The two end up in class 2-2 together, with Yosuke sitting at the desk behind the protagonist. Chie Satonaka mentions that the protagonist is like Yosuke, as both are from the city. After school is dismissed, Yosuke returns Chie's copy of Trial of the Dragon. He enjoyed the movie but accidentally broke her DVD and promises to replace it after he gets his next paycheck. He tries to run away, but Chie catches him and kicks him into a desk. Outside the school gates, Yosuke hears that Yukiko Amagi turned down a guy who asked her out, and he recalls when she turned him down during the previous school year. Yukiko does not remember it this way, so Yosuke attempts to ask her again, but she replies she would rather not go out with him.
When the protagonist walks to school on April 13th, he sees Yosuke ride by on his bicycle again, this time crashing into a trash can. The protagonist helps him out of the trash can, and Yosuke recognizes him as the new transfer student. After school, Yosuke tells the protagonist about Inaba's local specialty, beefsteak, and invites him to a place where you can get it cheap to pay him back for his help that morning. Chie overhears this and invites herself to go along since Yosuke still owes her for breaking Trial of the Dragon. She tries to invite Yukiko too, but Yukiko has to get home that day to help at the Amagi Inn. Yosuke assumes she is already training to take over the inn, but Yukiko denies this.
Yosuke laments having to pay for two people, changes his plans, and takes the protagonist and Chie to the Junes food court instead. He explains to the protagonist that the Junes Inaba branch opened recently; his father is the manager, so his family moved to Inaba from the city. According to Chie, many shops in the Central Shopping District have started closing since Junes opened, but Yosuke denies that this is entirely because of Junes. Yosuke spots Saki Konishi, a 3rd year at school who works at Junes and whose family owns a liquor store in the shopping district. He notices that she looks sad for some reason and offers support, but she tells him nothing is wrong. After teasing Yosuke and meeting the protagonist, Saki goes back to work. Yosuke mentions how she treats him the same way as her younger brother. Chie assumes that Yosuke wishes Saki would treat him differently and imagines a forbidden romance between the two. Yosuke tries to deny this. Assuming he has love troubles, Chie suggests Yosuke check out the Midnight Channel, an urban legend about seeing your soulmate when you watch a TV by yourself on a rainy night. Yosuke thinks that sounds stupid and tries to change the topic to Mayumi Yamano's death, but ends up watching the Midnight Channel that night anyway.
After school on April 14th, Yosuke hears from Chie that Saki found Yamano's body, and he assumes that is why she looked upset the other day. Chie begins describing the person she saw on the Midnight Channel, and Yosuke thinks he might have seen the same person. He asks the protagonist but is confused when he replies something about putting his hand into the TV. The three go to Junes together so Yosuke can show Chie TVs. When he asks the protagonist what kind of TV he's interested in, Yosuke sees the protagonist with his hand in a large screen model TV. He freaks out when the protagonist manages to stick his head in and suddenly needs to pee. When they hear customers nearby, the group panics and ends up falling into the display TV, ending up in the TV World. Not seeing any apparent exits, Yosuke suggests they try to find one.
Eventually, they come across an apartment room full of defaced posters. Yosuke observes that the thick yellow fog is lighter in the apartment. He tries using his cell phone but does not have any service. Yosuke cannot hold it anymore and ends up peeing against a wall in the apartment. He observes the chair and red noose in the middle of the apartment and thinks the defaced posters look familiar. Chie wants them to leave as she feels unwell, and Yosuke realizes he also feels unwell. When they return to the area they came from, Yosuke spots something in the distance, which turns out to be a mascot-looking bear. The bear complains about someone throwing people into the TV and tells the group to leave soon. Yosuke complains about not knowing how to leave, so the bear creates a stack of TVs that serves as an exit. He pushes them through the TVs, and they pop out back in Junes. Yosuke hears an announcement for the ready-made food sale at Junes and is surprised at how late it is already. When he looks at a poster in the electronics section of Misuzu Hiiragi, he realizes that it is the same poster they saw in the apartment inside of the TV. Since she has been in the media lately due to her husband's affair with Yamano, Yosuke starts to think that the room and the noose they saw were somehow related to Yamano's death. He gets creeped out thinking about it and hopes he can forget about what happened that day.
On April 15th, Yosuke is speechless when the principal announces that Saki was found dead that morning. He recounts to the protagonist and Chie that something was bugging him last night, so he watched the Midnight Channel again and saw Saki in pain. He recalls how someone else in class said they saw Yamano on the Midnight Channel, and he thinks the mysterious world inside the TV has something to do with both deaths. Chie wants him to drop this and leave it up to the police, but Yosuke points out that the police haven't made any progress on Yamano's death, and no one would believe them about going inside a TV. If he's wrong, then he's wrong, but he cannot ignore it and wants to know why Saki died. He tells the two he will wait for them at Junes.
When Chie and the protagonist arrive at Junes, they find Yosuke near the large TV with a golf club and a rope. Yosuke thinks if they go in again, they might be able to meet the bear, and then they will have a way out. Yosuke intends to leave Chie out of this, and instead gives her the other end of his rope while he and the protagonist go back to the TV. Inside, Yosuke sees they came to the same studio-looking area as before and figures that the TV in Junes is connected to the same place. They run into the bear again, who accuses them of throwing people into the TV. Yosuke quickly establishes a connection between people being thrown in and the two victims, and tries to convince the bear they are not the ones behind this. He gets frustrated and starts to find the bear more suspicious, and tries removing its head to see who is under the costume, but he is surprised when nothing is inside.
The bear believes them not to be the culprits, but since Yosuke's rope broke and they have no way out, it also refuses to help them leave the TV unless they agree to uncover the real culprit. Yosuke feels they are being blackmailed since they have no other way out, but leaves it up to the protagonist to decide who promises to help. He introduces himself and the protagonist and is unamused when the bear replies that his name is Teddie. Teddie gives them special glasses to see through the fog and takes them to where the second victim was before they disappeared. Aside from leading them around, Teddie is incapable of doing much, and Yosuke complains about how they agreed to solve a mystery without getting much support.
Teddie takes them to an area that resembles Konishi Liquors in the Central Shopping District. Yosuke questions why the area was replicated, but Teddie only knows it is "reality" for the person who created it. Aggressive Shadows take them by surprise, and the protagonist summons his Persona and defeats them. Yosuke wonders if he can do that too. He gets upset at Teddie who begins showering the protagonist with praise and calling him sensei after seeing his power. As they approach the liquor store again, they hear voices talking about how Saki is betraying her family by working at Junes. Yosuke recalls what Teddie said about this being "reality", and wonders if this was Saki's reality. Inside, they hear Saki's father's voice demanding to know why she had to work at Junes. Yosuke is in disbelief as Saki seemed to enjoy working at Junes. Then he hears Saki's voice, saying that she found Yosuke annoying and was only nice to him because he is the manager's son, wishing everything would go away. But Yosuke thinks this is all false and denies that Saki was like that.
Suddenly, Yosuke's Shadow manifests and says that he's the one who really finds everything annoying. According to the Shadow, Yosuke's carefree personality comes from loneliness. It also calls Yosuke out on his reasonings for coming to the TV as little more than finding the TV World exciting as there is nothing else to do in Inaba. It even accuses Yosuke of only using Saki's death as an excuse to let him play hero. Yosuke denies that and angrily rejects the idea that the Shadow is him. The Shadow goads him into rejecting him again and again before transforming and attacking. The protagonist again using his powers to defeat it. Yosuke tries to reject it again, but Teddie encourages him to accept it, or it will attack again. Yosuke admits that he was so ashamed of himself that he denied his Shadow was him. Now, he is able to accept it and gains a Persona of his own. He reflects on how when he heard Saki's voice, he wondered if she thought he was annoying deep down inside. He thanks the protagonist for being there and saving him, else this could have gone much worse.
Back at the entrance to the TV World, Yosuke hypothesizes what happened with Mayumi and Saki. He laments that they would not have died if only someone had been there to save them like the protagonist was for him. Teddie suggests they might be able to use their new powers to save people as they are otherwise unharmed by the Shadows before the fog lifts. With a better understanding of the situation, Yosuke resolves to catch the culprit. The two agree to meet Teddie back at the same spot. When they return to Junes, Chie gets mad, throws Yosuke's rope at his face, and then runs off, yelling that she hates both of them. Yosuke admits they might have made her worry too much and suggests they apologize tomorrow.

Trivia
- Yosuke was originally conceived as a party member and one of the protagonist's friend group. During development, Atlus wanted to add in a twist culprit between the November and March culprits. Yosuke was considered for this role as Atlus thought the player would be able to believe he was behind it all, but never actually wrote this and dropped the idea as they did not want to make a party member be the culprit.[9]
- In his Yasogami High social media profile in the 2009 setting book, Persona Club P4, Yosuke talks about liking the guitar and saving up for a scooter, both of which would later be used as plot points in Golden. He also mentions his favorite food is fruit flavored throat drops because they are useful for karaoke, but he hates tofu (which comes with an apology to Rise). He also dislikes cockroaches. The social clubs he has joined are "People Who Commute on Bike", "Wanna go to Junes?", "Delicious Homemade Food", and "Trial of the Dragon". His greeting is, "Yo! Welcome to Yo-suke's Room!" His inbox has a message from Chie reminding him about her DVD.[10] He has the same likes and dislikes in his Arena Ultimax remastered profile.[11]
- The developer Q&A about Yosuke reveals some background information and dropped scenes:[12]
- Originally, there was going to be a scene where Yosuke rode his bike into the Samegawa River.
- Yosuke has been studying to get his scooter license but does not have the money for it after Chie spent his money on Teddie's clothes, plus all of the snacks that Teddie buys with Yosuke's money. Chie thinks she did him a favor by preventing him from getting into a scooter accident.
- Yosuke does not like tofu because he finds it bland. He feels the same way about konjac.
- He listens to popular or catchy music on his headphones
- Yosuke was conceived as being clumsy, hence why his Persona has a low Luk stat. Though, rather than clumsy, he comes off as a person who says the wrong things at the wrong time.
- Yosuke listens to western music and movie soundtracks, plus Japanese music so he can talk to girls about it.[13]
- In Golden, Yosuke's snowboarding jacket mentions the year 1839 which is also the year that the serialized novel version of Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari began being published.
