Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei,[a] or just Digital Devil Story and Megami Tensei, is a series of novels authored by Aya Nishitani and their subsequent adaptations. The first novel of the same name was published in 1986 and was later followed by two sequels. The trilogy follows highschoolers Akemi Nakajima and Yumiko Shirasagi, the reincarnations of Izanagi and Izanami, as they combat demonic forces after Nakajima had summoned the demon Loki and inadvertently lost control of him.
The novels were met with high acclaim and were popular in Japan.[1] Following this success, the novels were expanded into a multimedia series with an OVA adaptation of the first novel and a series of video games, primarily role-playing games developed by Atlus and published by Namcot for the Famicom. The series is the first in what would later become the Megami Tensei franchise, and the direct precursor to the Shin Megami Tensei series.
