The protagonist is a student at St. Hermelin High School, he has black hair and brown eyes he also wears an earring in his left ear. In the PSP port of Persona he has purple eyes, as well as lower eyelids. In Revelations: Persona he has brown hair and blue eyes, and lacks his earring. His hair is black, although in certain illustrations it is shown purple.
He is a blank slate and silent protagonist, having very little characterization in-game. He has no dialogue options outside of the choices that directly affect the endings, what party members join the quest, and the moral choices that determine if he receives the Ultimate Persona totems in the SEBEC route. This is was a deliberate choice to allow the players to insert themselves into the story. If the protagonist makes the correct moral choices to get the best ending and gain ultimate Personas, the protagonist is portrayed as compassionate and clever, as well as confident and blunt, though laidback, notably through his Other Self.

Game Appearances
Megami Ibunroku Persona
The protagonist must be named by the player when he first encounters Philemon and gains the power of Persona. The only thing that is known about him is that he is a second-year student at St Hermelin. After the party make their way back to St Hermelin after the Hospital Incident, the protagonist can either go after SEBEC and Kandori, or investigate the curse of the Snow Queen and start the Snow Queen Quest. He can start a quest to make Reiji join the party when they get to the Other World later in the game in the SEBEC route.
In the SEBEC route, the protagonist can make several choices, some of which determine if he will achieve the good or bad ending, and others which determine if he will receive Ultimate Persona Totems when encountering his other self. If the protagonist is hostile to Mai when they meet in the Lost Forest, it will lock the party in the bad ending. If the protagonists acts selfishly and short-sighted when prompted with moral choices, his Other Self will berate him and either give 2 totems (for himself and Maki) or no totems at all depending on the amount of incorrect choices. However, if he is compassionate and acts kindly, his Other Self will give him 5 totems, allowing the entire party to fuse their respective Ultimate Persona.
His fate in the true ending is left unknown.
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
While the protagonist never appears in Innocent Sin, there are occasional allusions to him by Yukino Mayuzumi and Eriko Kirishima. He is also mentioned in one of the Climax Theater's Japanese-only import films as being the boy whom Elly and Maki Sonomura have a romantic rivalry for.[4]
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
An illusory version of the protagonist appears in Sumaru TV to torment Elly on her fears. The real version of the protagonist shows up in two different flashbacks inside Mt. Iwato (depending on whether Kei Nanjo or Elly are chosen as the fifth party member). He, Maki, Elly and Nanjo make a pact to meet each other again once they have fulfilled their dreams in Nanjo's flashback. In Elly's flashback, which is after Nanjo leaves them to go away to England, the protagonist reveals he must go away for a while as well for unknown reasons, though he will not stop being friends with his classmates.
At the very end of the game, when the St Hermelin Persona users bar Masao and Yuka rejoin at Parabellum Bar, the door opens, and although the person entering the bar is not seen, it is implied to be the protagonist based on Maki and Elly's reaction.

Trivia
- At the end of volume 3 of the manga, author and artist Shinshu Ueda wrote an omake abou her experiences playing Revelations: Persona. In this, she drew her interpretation of the American protagonist, whom she called Edward Tanaka. She imagined him to be to be mixed American and Japanese, though he did not speak English very well as a nod to Ueda's difficulties playing Revelations: Persona.
- His Other Self is shown playing the Atlus arcade game Groove on Fight.
