Gameplay

A direct adaptation of the gameplay seen in Persona 5, players are taking up the role of Nagisa Kamisiro, as he went through his day-to-day basis experiencing the dual life between spending time in the real world, dubbed "City Life", and the dungeon-crawling gameplay within the Metaverse. Unlike the mainline games, the game does not follow a calendar system, and each day of the week and the accompanying weather is on a fixed basis, repeating every seven in-game days. However, this mean that all activities, social links, missions, and main story segments can be completed at the player's own pace.

City Life

Similar to Persona 5, the player is able to freely visit various cities within the Tokyo Metropolitan area, such as Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara, and Yongen-Jaya, alongside new areas such as Zoshigaya and Shimo-Kitazawa. The player can also perform side activities such as batting, fishing, cooking, and gardening, in addition to new activities within the music or soccer clubs in the protagonist's school, as well as decorating the protagonist's house with figures and plushies obtained through various gachapon and crane machines in the city. Unlike the mainline games, these side activities can be performed at any time and does not pass the time.

The player's daily City Life activities is separated into five time periods; two during After School, two in the Evening, and one at Night. In each period, the player selects an activity from a randomly generated list of activities available at that time. These activities may include taking part-time jobs, doing various tasks, spending time with Synergy Links, or interacting with side characters across the city. Performing any activity consumes one Action Point, which ends that time period and advances the day. Sometimes, an activity will feature a “Mult. Applied” icon, giving the player the option to spend three Action Points at once to receive triple the normal rewards. After all five periods are completed, the player must go to sleep to progress to the next day, resetting the schedule. Players can store up to twenty Action Points at a time and recover five Action Points each real-life day. Additional Action Points can also be gained through recovery items, with a maximum storage capacity of one thousand.

Social Stats are similar in structure to the mainline games, but now can be raised to a higher level, up to a maximum Rank of 20 instead of the usual cap of 5. Similarly, Confidants, now named Synergies, has a higher cap of 20 Ranks instead of 10. Most of them contain upwards of ten fixed events, similar to the original games. Like Confidants, these Synergies provide additional abilities that benefit the player in both combat and everyday activities around the city. These abilities may unlock new part-time jobs, make new items available for purchase, improve skills for side activities, or provide advantages during Metaverse exploration. Side Quests and City Life Quests featuring several side characters in the game will also appear, which the players can complete to obtain rewards or unlocking new features and activities during City Life.

Thieves Den makes a return in this game, which functions similarly to Persona 5 Royal, in addition to a new feature of the Den's decorations unlocking permanent passive buffs and rewards for players during combat or during City Life activities. Tycoon also makes a return with most of the same rules, along with the addition of the Wonder Card, online matchmaking, and seasonal rule changes. In addition, a separate area similar to the Thieves Den called Companio was introduced. In this space, players can team up to form groups, interact with one another, and take part in the Gates of the Nightmare Catcher game mode to earn various rewards.

Story

There are two different stories happening around the same time, the Main Story and Crossroads of Fate. Main Story entails the protagonist, Lufel and their team of Phantom Thieves exploring the Metaverse for a singular goal, figuring out what is causing everyone to lose their desires.

Crossroads of Fate (refered from hereon as CrossFates) are the collaboration stories between the P5X cast and the cast of previous entries. For the Persona 5 and Royal CrossFate, they're team up alongside with the original Phantom Thieves of Hearts in order to investigate areas that looks like original Palaces from respectively game, but with mixed some of parts from P5X Palaces (like Dam of Wraths' robot control panel mechanics) and facing off against shadows that resemble the original Persona 5 bosses. During the CrossFate collaboration with Persona 3 Reload, their CrossFate story entail the protagonist, Lufel, and Riko, who are somehow getting warped back in time and been separated during their way back from shopping in Port Island. Later on, they're meet and teaming up with S.E.E.S to explore an unknown dungeon that looks like Tartarus.

At specific time periods there are also mini story events that the protagonist can partake in. These events mainly involve interacting with a specific set of characters during certain celebratory or seasonal events.

Combat

The player can bring a party of up to four members (including the player character), and a Navigator. Certain character are variations of one another and thus you cannot put two versions of the same character on one team, for example Mont alongside her alternate "Frostgale" version. Each party member has a special designated Roles, which describes the abilities of the party member as a whole.

  • Sweeper: Specializes in dealing damage towards groups of foes.
  • Assassin: Specializes in dealing damage focused towards a single enemy.
  • Medic: Specializes in providing healing skills for the party.
  • Guardian: Specializes in protecting allies and defense.
  • Strategist: Specializes in buffing team abilities and stats
  • Saboteur: Specializes in debuffing enemies to gain the upper hand.
  • Elucidator: Navigator-only role focusing on buffs and support skills for the party.
  • Virtuoso: Specializes in myriad of tactics, giving an advantage over various foes.

The game’s combat has been slightly simplified than ones seen in Persona 5 Royal. For starters, each character’s Persona (or Persona Duos), including the player's Personas have up to three skills available. Each party member also has two passive skills and Awareness, additional passive skills that can be earned by obtaining duplicates of characters called "Cognites". One Mores, Baton Passes, Technicals, Gun Attacks and All-Out Attacks all made a return with slight changes (with the exception of Gun Attacks):

  • Technicals are now limited to certain skills instead of using a certain attacks to an enemy afflicted with certain status effects. However, Nuclear and Psy attacks still works similarly to the original games.
  • Knocking down an enemy still triggers One More, but rather than allowing a party member to freely act again with any of their available skills, the player is given the option of using a fixed skill of either a party member or of the player's Persona—typically (but not always) an attack keyed to their element. Using a party member's skill in this case is considered a Baton Pass. If these attacks knocks down another enemy, One More is once again triggered and the player was given another option, but the player is no longer able to use their previous option.
  • All-Out Attacks returns to how it works in Persona 3 and Persona 4, which is initiated by any party member (except navigators) once every enemy has been downed. This means that Shadow Negotiation is absent in this game; instead, the player will randomly obtain Personas upon the end of the battle.

A new feature to this game are Highlights, which are in a similar vein to Showtime, albeit performed with only one character rather than two. After charging up a meter, a character can be selected and they will use a Highlight. Most Highlights are attacks dealing huge damage to one or more enemies, but some Highlight, like Lufel's, are stat buffs or health recovery rather than attacks. The protagonist's highlight has different versions depending on which type Persona that he has summoned with during the battle. Another new feature is the Support menu, reserved for Navigators of the party. After certain amount of turns, the player can command their Navigator to use skills that will profide stat or survivability buffs to one or the entire party. These Navigator Skills doesn't cost SP, but has a set number of turns to cooldown before the next move can be used.

Some stronger enemies will have Down Points shown alongside their health, similar to Down Gauge in Persona 5 Strikers. Enemies will not be able to be knocked down unless the player manage to deplete the enemy's Down Points, which can be done using the enemy's weakness or performing Critical Hits. Some strong enemies, called Depraved Shadows, will also have special traits active throughout the fight, which forces the player to think strategically to win the battle.

Combat mechanics for the Persona 3 Reload characters function a bit differently. They use Theurgy as opposed to Highlights, and have a one time use assist skill as opposed to Gun Skills. The UI for the Persona 3 characters is also in the Reload style as opposed to the Persona 5's UI.

Metaverse

Within the Metaverse, Mementos has been entirely overhauled, no longer being procedurally generated and has set floors per regions. Aside from that, most of the Metaverse in general has seen little changes. Thieves Tool crafting is still present and the Palaces function identically to their Persona 5 Royal iterations.

Several new features and gameplay modes were added to the Metaverse:

  • Chamber of Recollections: A function that allows the player to revisit past Palaces in the game
  • Realm of Repression: A series of stages that allows the player to grind for upgrade materials, Personas, and Revelation Cards
  • The Velvet Trials: Similar to Challenge Battles in Persona 5 Royal, it is a series of challenging stages with the goal of obtaining the highest amount of score possible.
  • Trials From the Sea of Souls: A set of 5 stages with the goal of obtaining the highest total score possible. Players who are able to reach a certain treshold of scthore will rank up and obtain better rewards.
  • Metro of Desire: A rogue-like mode where players must traverse through a metro line and defeating the strong shadow at the end of the line. Players will obtain various items and charm sets, and encounter various random events that will help them survive the gauntlet.
  • Gates of the Nightmare Catcher: A cooperative raid-mode where players within a Companio band together to obtain the highest overall score to get rewards.

Party and Player Progression

As the player progresses through the game, the player will be given various ways to power up their characters.

Player Character

Schema is the player character's exclusive leveling system. Players can obtain Schema Points by fusing and recording Personas to the Conpendium, and Schema Points+ by participating in The Velvet Trials. The Schema Points are used to complete the player character's Skill Tree, which provides buffs range from stat increases, ailment resistance/hit rate, to effectiveness of One More/Highlights/All Out Attacks.

For the player character, EXP can be earned by completing main story missions, defeating enemies (up until a certain cap per real-life day), and completing daily missions. When the player reaches Lv 80, the player Lv. becomes a Super Lv., which when filled, grants the player Schema Points++ to be used in the Schema. For the player character's weapon, it can be obtained through Palace Progressions, with additional items to improve the weapon obtained through various activities and limited timed events, such as The Velvet Trials or the Companio Shop.

Outside of these, players can upgrade and earn new Personas through Fusion, which grants players new skill and roles to the player. Personas come in Ranks and a maximum Lv that it can possess, which can be increased to a certain extend through the use of Persona Medals obtained through gameplay or Realm of Repression. Increasing the Persona's maximum Lv may also unlock exclusive passives for said Persona. Skill Inheritance is also in the game, albeit in a more limiting function as it requires Persona Medals, and players unable to select which skill to inherit.

Party Members

For party members, the player can use materials obtained from gameplay and Realm of Repression to increase Character Level, Weapon Level, and Persona Skill Levels respectively. The player character's Lv. will dictate the maximum level that the player's party members, their weapons, and their Persona Skill level can have.

Starting from Lv 35, each party member will be given access to Revelation Cards. Each card has certain passives locked behind the number of the cards and which type of card used, and each has a main stat and a randomized sub-stats, which serve as additional stat increases for the party members. Starting from Lv 70, each party member will be given access to Mindscape, which increases basic stats and upgrading the characters even further. Mindscape requires items that can only be earned by participating in The Velvet Trials and Sea of Souls.

There are two methods of obtaining party members in the game. For canonical Phantom Thieve members, the player will obtain them during the course of the story. For most Phantom Idols and duplicates of any party member, the player can obtain them through the gacha banner system. It is explained that most characters obtained in this fashion are cognitive manifestations of the original individual taken from the Sea of Souls, and not the real person. As you obtain duplicates of a character called "Cognite", they will gain Awareness which unlocks additional passives and improves the characters' abilities.

There are two methods of obtaining a party member's weapon in the game. Upon obtaining a party member, they will come with a default weapon, whose materials can be bought through Iwai's Airsoft Shop. For stronger weapons, the player can obtain them either through a seperate gacha banners, or purchasing it through Iwai's Airsoft Shop using a special currency earned every time you obtain weapons through the gacha. Each weapons obtained are exclusive for each party member and give specific benefits to the character who equips them.

Pre-Release

Building on a long-standing relationship with Sega,[1] developer Perfect World proposed the project in 2019 and officially began development in 2022.[2] Due to differences in the development engine and process, most assets were built from scratch specifically for the game.[3] Persona 5: The Phantom X was first revealed in April 2021 as Code Name: X, a mobile game entry in an unnamed famous Japanese console game series; it was speculated to be connected to Persona 5 because of the general aesthetic of the visuals and audio of the game, website assets that were prefaced with a "P5" in the filename, and the binary code in the trailer translated to "Persona 5X." Two character introductions were released for characters resembling Yukimi Fujikawa and the protagonist.[4]

China, Korea, and Taiwan

The first closed beta test of the game ran from March 29, 2023, to April 1, 2023. The second closed beta, named the Awakening Test, ran from August 18, 2023 to August 25, 2023. The third closed beta, named the Heart Stealing Test, was available from January 16, 2024, through January 31, 2024.

Japan, Worldwide, and Southeast Asia

An official Japanese Twitter account for the game appeared in September, announcing a presentation for September 25th, as well as an appearance at TGS.[5] Pre-registrations for closed beta were open for a limited time from September 25th to October 6th, 2024, and the closed beta ran from November 29, 2024 to December 5, 2024.[6] A broadcast which will announce the Japanese release date has been tentatively scheduled for May 2025.[7] In the 2024 Sega Sammy fiscal year report, it was stated that the game would have a full release in Japan in summer 2025, and that there are plans to continue to push the game to a worldwide release.[8] A Japanese live stream on March 31st mentioned that the game was being localized into English and there would be a big announcement about the English version in an upcoming May 2025 stream.[citation needed] On May 12, 2025, the official Atlus West Twitter account posted the Phantom Thieves logo, with a note to stay tuned for further announcements,[9] and a live stream was announced for May 15th.

The May 15th "P5X Vol. 2" pre-recorded live stream was released in both English and Japanese, with the Japanese voice actresses for Motoha Arai and Yui appearing as guests alongside Yohsuke Uda and Yusuke Nitta from Atlus, and Jun Matsunaga and Yuta Sakai from Sega. During the stream, the panelists announced the release date, showed a story trailer, fielded questions from English and Japanese games journalists, and introduced the main characters and Phantom Idols. After this segment, the English stream went to the pre-registration announcements. The Japanese stream had additional content and was around 50 minutes longer. It showed footage of Motoha's awakening, Motoha's voice actor exploring Kiuchi's Palace, footage of the protagonist meeting Yui in virtual real estate, Yui's voice actor exploring Shibuya, and then both voice actors did a drawing activity where they designed their own Phantom Idols. Roughly 8 hours prior to the live stream, the game's App Store and Google Play listings became public, listing Japanese and Global release date of June 26, 2025, and Southeast Asia release date of July 3, 2025
