This page details the process of fusion in Devil Children Black Book and Red Book.

Fusion Systems

Black Book and Red Book have a total of five different fusion systems, whose availability changes depending on the version being played. They are:

Partner Fusion

Partner Fusion consists of fusing the protagonist's demon partner (Cerberus in Black Book and Gryphon in Red Book) with another demon.

Upon fusion, the partner will gain experience points equal to six times the amount given when defeating that demon in battle. Upon gathering enough experience points, the partner will level up, which increases their maximum HP, MP, and a total of +4 points will be distributed among their stats. In this process, the partner's level cannot exceed the protagonist's by more than 5.

Even if the partner does not level up, a random number of points will be distributed among their stats upon fusion, based on the level difference between them and the demon being fused.

+0 −30 or less.
+1 −29 ~ −1
+2 +0 ~ +2
+4 +3 ~ +5
+5 +6 ~ +10
+7 +11 ~ +14
+8 +15 ~ +19
+10 +20 or more.

Racial Fusion

Racial Fusion is a system similar to the fusion process present in most Megami Tensei games. It consists of fusing two demons of different races to create a demon of a third race. Demons up to five levels above the protagonist can be created.

The race of the resulting demon is determined as per the following table. Mute-race demons can only be created via fusion accident. Boss-race demons cannot be used or created in Racial Fusion.

Finally, the resulting demon will be the lowest-leveled member of the target race whose level is greater than the following:

First demon's level+Second demon's level2+2

Number of Innate Skills

Each demon has a total of six innate skills. Demons recruited via negotiation or obtained via events have access to their first three skills, while demons created via Racial Fusion also have access to the fourth skill.

The fifth and sixth skills cannot be learned via Racial Fusion, and by extension in Black Book as a whole.

Skill Inheritance

A demon created via Racial Fusion can inherit up to three skills from the component demons. Only magic skills are inheritable, not physical skills.

Those skills are manually selected by the player and the only restriction is that demons cannot inherit a skill from an element they're weak to.

As a demon only has six skill slots and demons created via Racial Fusion have four of those slots filled, inheriting the final skill requires overwriting one of the demon's innate skills.

Fusion Accidents

Fusion accidents have a 10% chance of occurring when a demon of the God and/or Akuma races are involved. The result of a fusion accident will always be a demon of the Mute race.

Mute-race demons will be one rank lower than the expected result of the fusion.

For example, should a fusion accident occur between a level 13 and a level 15 demon, the following will happen: inputting those numbers on the level formula will result in 16, so the expected result would be the level 17 demon Fairy; however, the result will be a level 15 Waira instead.

Pure-Blood Fusion

Pure-Blood Fusion is the process of fusing a demon with an identical demon.

The second demon will be consumed, increasing the first demon's HP and MP by a random value. The limit of a demon's maximum HP and MP is tied to the protagonist's level.

Number of Innate Skills

Each demon has a total of six innate skills, but only have three of them available at first. Upon undergoing Pure-Blood Fusion, a demon has a chance of unlocking their final three innate skills. This process is not guaranteed to happen and the exact odds are unknown.

Should the demon have less than three open skill slots, the player is free to choose which skill or skills to overwrite.

Evolution

Certain demons may evolve upon undergoing Pure-Blood Fusion a certain number of times. The player is warned when that will happen, and will be given the choice of whether to allow for evolution or just keep increasing the demon's maximum HP and MP.

Demons up to five levels above the protagonist may be created. If the protagonist is not high-leveled enough, evolution is not possible even if the minimum number of fusions has been reached, only allowing for HP and MP upgrades.

The evolved demon will have access to three of its innate skills, and may inherit up to three magic skills from its previous form, as long as they're not of an element the demon is weak to.

If any of the demon's stats, HP, or MP exceed the natural value of its evolved form, that value will be kept. For example, if a demon with 500 maximum HP and 50 Attack is to evolve into a demon that has 400 maximum HP and 40 Attack, it will keep the 500 maximum HP and 50 Attack.

Mixed-Blood Fusion

Mixed-Blood Fusion is the process of fusing two different demons.

The level difference between the first and the second demon cannot be lower than -20, and two demons of the same race can be fused.

Each demon in the game has two hidden numerical values not mentioned in any official source, and they will henceforth be called Base Value and Add Value, with the latter always being lower. Upon fusing two demons, the result of the fusion will be a demon of the same race as the first demon, with the lowest Base Value that is greater than the following:

First demon's Base Value+Second demon's Add Value

Using the following demons as an example:

Race Demon Level Base Value Add Value
God Nekhbet 4 8 3
Akuma Nekomata 5 9 3

By fusing Nekhbet and Nekomata, the resulting demon will be of the God race as that is the race of the first demon used. Nekhbet's Base Value and Nekomata's Add Value together form 11. As such, the resulting demon will be Tatari Mokke, who has a Base Value of 10.

However, by fusing Nekomata and Nekhbet, the following will happen: the resulting demon will be of the Akuma race as that is the race of the first demon used. Nekomata's Base Value and Nekhbet's Add Value together form 12. As such, the result of the fusion will remain Nekomata, as the next strongest Akuma-race demon, Ammut, has a Base Value of 14.

If the resulting demon is different from the fusion components, it is considered as sacrificing the second demon to evolve the first. The resulting demon will have access to three of its innate skills, and may inherit up to three magic skills from its previous form unless they belong to an element the demon is weak to. If any parameter, HP, or MP from the first demon exceeds that of the fusion result, those values will be kept.

If the resulting demon is the same as the first demon used in fusion, it is considered as sacrificing the second demon to strengthen the first. A random number of points will be distributed among the stats of the first demon, based on the level difference between the first and second demon.

Boss-race demons can only be used as the first demon in Mixed-Blood Fusion, and the resulting demon will always remain the same.

Points Granted Upon Fusion
Amount Level Difference (1st Demon − 2nd Demon)
+1 −20 ~ −1
+2 +0 ~ +2
+4 +3 ~ +5
+5 +6 ~ +10
+7 +11 ~ +14
+8 +15 ~ +19
+10 +20 or more.

Link Cable Fusion

This type of fusion occurs when two players have their consoles connected via link cable. This is also achievable in the PS1 remake by connecting two save files in the multiplayer menu.

Each player contributes one demon to the fusion.

If both copies connected are of Black Book, Racial Fusion will be performed and both players will receive a copy of the resulting demon.

If both copies connected are of Red Book, either Pure-Blood or Mixed-Blood Fusion will be performed depending on the demons chosen and both players will receive a copy of the resulting demon.

If a copy of Black Book and a copy of Red Book are connected, Racial Fusion will be performed on the Black Book side and Mixed-Blood Fusion will be performed on the Red Book side. In this case, each player will receive a different demon.
