The Rukh,[a] anglicized as "Roc", is a legendary bird in Arab and Iranian folklore. It is prominently featured in the story "Sinbad the Sailor" included in the collection One Thousand and One Nights (better known as the Arabian Nights).

In his travelogue Description of the World, Marco Polo describes the Roc as being enormous in size with large feathers, and it is strong enough to seize an elephant in its talons and drop it from up high.

Kazuma Kaneko's design of Rukh for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner and Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is designed without being based on any particular kind of bird.[1] Its body appears to be made of sand. In Devil Summoner, its eyes are blue, while in Soul Hackers, its eyes are red.

The Rukh is a giant bird also known as the Roc, and it is said to resemble an eagle. Its body is incomparably large, and it is even capable of snatching up an elephant with its talons and flying away. In Burton's version of "Arabian Nights", the Rukh eats giant serpents said to be capable of swallowing an elephant in one gulp. Additionally, in the Mardrus version, the genie of the lamp ifrit says to Aladdin "I and all the genie servants of the lamp are the slaves of the great Roc," because the Rukh was considered a symbol of the sun and the sky.
