Origin

The Stymphalides (Ancient Greek: Στυμφαλίδες, Stymphalídes), also known as the Stymphalian birds (Στυμφαλίδες ὄρνιθες, Stymphalídes órnithes), are a flock of voracious, man-eating birds in Greek mythology. They were named after their nesting grounds in a marsh near Lake Stymphalia in Arcadia, Greece, where they migrated to escape a pack of wolves. Said to have been raised by Ares or kept as pets by Artemis, the birds multiplied rapidly and terrorized the region by destroying crops, fruit trees, and preying upon local townspeople.

Descriptions depict the Stymphalides as crane-sized birds resembling ibises, equipped with powerful bronze beaks, poisonous dung, and razor-sharp metallic feathers capable of being launched at targets like arrows. Their beaks and feathers could easily pierce bronze and iron armor.

The creatures are most famous for their role in the Twelve Labors of Heracles, serving as his sixth labor under King Eurystheus. Unable to enter the marshy ground, Heracles received a pair of bronze rattles called crotala, forged by Hephaestus, from the goddess Athena. Heracles shook the rattles from a nearby mountain to startle the flock into the air, allowing him to shoot many of them down with arrows dipped in the venomous blood of the Hydra. The surviving birds fled Arcadia to the island of Aretias in the Euxine Sea, where they were later encountered by Jason and the Argonauts. In an alternate account recorded by the historian Mnaseas, the Stymphalides were not birds, but human women slain by Heracles for being inhospitable; however, in the temple of Stymphalian Artemis, they were traditionally represented as birds alongside statues of maidens with birds' feet.

The Stymphalides were originally birds that took refuge at this lake out of fear of wolves. Their wings, claws, and bears were made of bronze, and they used these to attack people and livestock.

Heracles' extermination of these bird monsters was done as the sixth of his twelve labors. He was awarded a cymbal from the goddess Pallas Athena for chasing the bird monsters into the sky and shooting them down one by one with arrows.

Kaneko Kazuma Dennō Akuma Zukan ステュンパロスという湖に浮かぶ島に住み着く怪鳥で、翼の一部が青銅でできている。この怪鳥は、周囲の漁師たちに被害を与えていたのだが、英雄ヘラクレスの活躍で見事追い払われることとなった。
Translation: It is a bird monster that lives on an island floating in the lake of Stymphalos, and part of its wings is made of bronze. These monstrous birds had been causing injury to the nearby fishermen, but thanks to the efforts of the hero Heracles, they were successfully driven away.
