Profile

Origin

Yatsufusa is a dog from the novel Nansō Satomi Hakkenden written by Kyokutei Bakin and published in serialization from 1814-1842.

Design

Yatsufusa's eight colored orbs have the Japanese version of the eight Confucian virtues written on them. Red is justice (義), orange is filial piety (孝), yellow is honesty (信), green is wisdom (智), teal is harmony with siblings (悌), cyan is rite (礼), indigo is loyalty (忠), and purple is benevolence (仁).

滝沢馬琴作「南総里見八犬伝」に登場する、人語を解する妖犬。「八房」と書く。

滝田城主里見義実に飼われた犬。義実が戯れに「敵将の首を取ってきたなら、三女・伏姫を嫁にやる」と言ったところ、その夜ヤツフサは本当に首を咥えてきた。義実はヤツフサに伏姫をやることをためらうが、伏姫は自らヤツフサの嫁となる。

ヤツフサと伏姫は城を離れ山で暮らし始めるが、そこで両者とも義実の家臣・金椀孝徳の鉄砲に倒れることになる。
