Origin
Robots are machines designed to perform various tasks. The term was coined by Josef Čapek, brother of Czech playwright Karel Čapek, for use in the latter's 1920 science-fiction play R.U.R.; it is derived from the Czech word for "forced labor". While Čapek's robots were artificial lifeforms rather than mechanical, the term quickly became used for machines.
