Origin

Beelphegor^[a] is the Septuagint and Vulgate transliteration of Baal Peor,^[b] a deity associated with Mount Peor mentioned in the book of Numbers, which is a part of the Jewish Torah and Christian Old Testament. European demonologists in the Early Modern period would use Belphegor as the name of a demon. Peter Binsfeld associated Belphegor with the sin of sloth.

Design

Belphegor's Shin Megami Tensei II design is based on the illustration of Belphegor by Louis Le Breton in Jacques Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal, though the toilet has been changed to a modern western-style toilet.^[1] The toilet in Belphegor's Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon design is more faithful to Le Breton's original illustration, though the lid has been reinterpreted as wheels.

Belphegor is the guardian of the Watchtower in the Factory district. When Aleph arrives, he has already beaten Zayin, who warns Aleph not to underestimate him. Upon being confronted, Belphegor will be impressed that the party has made it so far and attacks them. After his defeat, he questions who Aleph is to be able to control so many demons, and dies.

Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation

The Archpriest of the Millennium faction is in reality the demon Belphegor the Tyrant, who had been secretly killing the higher-ups of the Millennium by sending them to the Ueno Shrine to be sacrificed to Bael.

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon

Belphegor is featured in the Case File "Fear of Betobeto," where Raidou investigates an epidemic of men losing the will to work. Going to Mannen-Cho, Raidou discovers a man who has decided not to work anymore, bemoaning how honest living and hard work are ultimately pointless for those in the working class. Belphegor then appears, laughing at how easy it is to tempt people in the Capital as he reveals himself to be responsible for the surge in lazy men. He then notices that Raidou is a Devil Summoner and attacks him to consume his power. After being defeated, Belphegor complains about the amount of energy he has lost. He says all he wanted to do was be lazy, figuring that with the Capital's luck being askew, he could take advantage of the situation without much effort, but he settles on going back to doing nothing and disappears. The man affected by Belphegor retains no memory of the experience and hurries to go back to his job.
