Sphinx is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

The Sphinx is a creature in the Greek tale of Oedipus with the head of a woman, the breast, feet, and tail of a lion, and the wings of a bird. The Sphinx was sent by Hera, and she perched upon Mount Phicium, posing a riddle she learned from the Muses to the Thebans: "What is that which has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?" It was said by the oracle that the Sphinx would go away if the riddle was correctly answered. However, whenever the Thebans discussed it amongst themselves and could not determine the answer, the Sphinx would snatch a person and eat them. The king of Thebes, Creon, declared after his son's death that whoever could correctly answer the riddle would become king of Thebes and marry the previous king Laius's widow Jocasta. Oedipus was able to correctly answer the riddle—a man, which walks on four feet as an infant, two feet as an adult, and uses a cane in old age—and the Sphinx threw herself from the citadel and died.

In Egypt, several statues were created of a lion with the head of a man; these are dubbed sphinxes by the Greeks in the Hellenistic era, though the similarities with the Greek Sphinx are superficial. The most famous Egyptian sphinx statue is the Great Sphinx in Giza.

Design

Both of the Sphinx's designs by Kazuma Kaneko are a composite. It has wings like the Greek Sphinx but a man's face with an Egyptian pharaoh's headdress and false beard.
