Paracelsus made Gnome into the spirit of the earth among his four spirits. This was also the first time Gnomes were clearly described.

They are beings similar to Dwarves and Knockers, dwelling underground and spending their time protecting the treasures and minerals of the earth.

The name appears to come from a Greek word meaning "earth-dweller".

The alchemist Paracelsus coined the name Gnome and gave it to the spirit of the earth among the spirits of the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air. Said to mean "earth-dweller" in Greek. As their name suggests, they are said to live underground, protecting the places where treasure and minerals are. They are believed to chiefly dig holes under trees and live in family units, are often depicted as tiny people with the face of old people, and are said to live to be around 400 years old. Generally, it is said that the men wear red triangular hats, while the women wear green ones.
