Merkabah is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
The Merkabah (Hebrew: מֶרְכָּבָהChariot, romanized Merkāḇâ), meaning "Chariot," refers to the divine chariot or throne of God. Merkabah mysticism is a branch of Judaism that appeared during the Talmudic and post-Talmudic periods (c.100 BC-1000 AD), its primary focus being the visionary and introspective practices centered around the Merkabah, as is described in Ezekiel 1:4-26 of the Hebrew Bible. In these passages, the eponymous Ezekiel describes a complex vision of a divine chariot, the Merkabah, which carries the presence of God. The Merkabah itself is reported to have an appearance like sapphire stone, driven by four multi-winged, multi-headed entities.[1]
Design
In Shin Megami Tensei IV, Merkabah's design was illustrated by guest artist Keita Amemiya, and revised in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse by Masayuki Doi. It features a pale, gender-ambiguous humanoid form shrouded in several wings and blades, and bearing a face over its midriff. It possesses four arms, one of which extends into a serpentine body with a face around the elbow. In its second form, Merkabah's body is split in half and composed almost entirely of wings. Its left half retains the ornate angelic features of its first form, while the other half appears much more demonic and sinister. Either side bears half a face, while Merkabah's actual face bridges the two halves of its body, as does an arch of thorns.
In the Devil Children series, Merkabah is a four-armed machine comprised of blue and yellow metal, with disc-shaped plates affixed with spikes. A sphere connecting either plate bears a face wearing a red mask.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
|
Sometimes called the "heavenly chariot" or the "throne of God." Described as having four faces and four wings in Ezekiel. There is also a form of meditation that invokes Merkabah used to connect to a higher realm. The ritual is quite dangerous, so caution is advised.
