Zhuque, also known as Suzaku and Feng Huang in certain localizations, is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Origin

Zhuque, or the Vermilion Bird, is one of the Four Symbols. It is mentioned in the Confucian Book of Rites, as well as Daoist texts regarding the Five Elements. In these texts, Zhuque represents the south, summer, and fire. It is also the constellation associated with the Flame Emperor Shennong (and Chi You) among the Five Regions' Highest Deities, who is associated with the planet Mars.

In cosmology, Zhuque is a constellation, consisting of several "Mansions," roughly translating to moon positions; μ Gem is its well, θ Cnc is its ghost, δ Hya is its willow, α Hya is its star, υ¹ Hya is its net, α Crt is its wings, and γ Crv is its chariot.

Being part of the Four Symbols, Zhuque is paired with Xuanwu, Qinglong, and Baihu.

This bird is considered a king standing as the pinnacle of all birds, and its appearance is thought to be like a blend of many birds. It was later adopted into Yin-Yang Wuxing philosphy as a sacred bird displaying a vermilion color, and because "vermilion" represents the south and fire, it was seen as a god protecting the southern direction and a spirit who presides over fire. It flies freely above the world's seas and its form is said to appear during times of morality. In Japan it is said that a large pond, where Zhuque was believed to live, was constructed south of Heian-kyō during the construction of the capital.
