Profile

Origin

Komainu[a] (lit. "Korean dog") are a pair of lion-like statues located at the gates of Shinto shrines in Japan. Such statues ultimately derive from Chinese stone lion statues, and they were transmitted to Japan from the Korean peninsula (hence the name). The Korean-style komainu may be distinguished from the Chinese-style karajishi[b] (lit. "Chinese lion").

Often, one komainu has its mouth open and the other closed; this imagery is borrowed from Niō statues at Buddhist temples.
