Origin

Quetzalcoatl is a primary deity in the Aztec pantheon and one of the most well-known incarnations of the feathered serpent archetype common in Mesoamerica, alongside Kukulkan and Gucumatz. He is often conflated with the deification of a legendary ruler by the name of Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl who ruled over the Toltec culture in the early 10th century, though this is believed by some to be a post-Conquest invention.

Nomenclature

Quetzalcoatl comes from the Classical Nahuatl quetzalli, which refers to the plumage of the bird species Pharomachrus mocinno, and coatl, meaning "serpent".
