Demogorgon, known as Demoirgon in some manuscripts, is a "supreme deity whose name is not permitted to know" mentioned in commentary on Statius's Thebaid. It is likely a corruption of the word "Demiurge" (accusative δημιουργόν dēmiourgón). During the Renaissance, writers took this enigmatic statement at face value and popularized Demogorgon as either a demon, an ancient god, or both.
