Origin

An archangel is a type of angel in Abrahamic religions with special authority. Such angels first appear in Second Temple-period Jewish works such as the Book of Enoch and the Book of Tobit, and in Second Temple Jewish and early Christian literature, these angels are usually numbered in groups of either four or seven. While the term archangel is present in Greek-language works such as the New Testament's Epistle of Jude and Revelation of John, an equivalent term is unknown in Hebrew or Judaeo-Aramaic.

In the Christian Bible, the only angel to be explicitly called by the word archangel is Michael. However, the Christian Church has generally considered there to be multiple archangels. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael by name and discourages assigning further names.

Pseudo-Dionysius in On the Celestial Hierarchy posits that archangels are the second order in the third and final hierarchy (and thus eighth overall). This work would be influential in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions.

In the Megami Tensei franchise, the Archangel demon is separate from the four Archangels consisting of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel, who are instead considered seraphim within the context of the franchise, and they are only formerly of the archangel order.

According to Kazuma Kaneko, the symbols on the banner of the Shin Megami Tensei II Archangel design have no meaning and were simply created to fit the aesthetic of the illustration.
