Profile

Origin

The Jersey Devil is a cryptid from American folklore, said to inhabit the New Jersey Pine Barrens. It is typically described as a winged, hoofed creature with a horse-like head and a draconic body. The earliest recorded accounts date to the 18th century, with local legends developing further in the 19th century before gaining widespread attention during a wave of reported sightings in 1909[1].

The Jersey Devil is subject to multiple folktales concerning the Pine Barrens, most of them involving quaker Deborah Leeds[2]. In the most well known legend set in 1735 Deborah had 12 children and when she learned she was having a 13th, she cursed it. When she gave birth to the child it transformed into a monstrous form and flew into the Pine Barrens. In another legend Deborah was a witch and the father was The Devil. Deborah Leeds was a real-life quaker married to soft Christian occultist Japhet Leeds.
