Neko Shogun ("Cat General") is derived from a tale recorded in the 1852 book The Cat Garden by Huang Han. The tale describes a certain Ming-era general called Mao shàngshū who pacified Annam (present-day northern Vietnam) and had a shrine built in his honor, but his surname Mao (毛 Máo) was eventually confused with the similar-sounding word for "cat" (猫 māo). Note that this tale has no basis in historical fact, though the story may be loosely inspired by Mao Bowen [zh], a military advisor stationed in Annam by the Jiajing Emperor.

The same book also mentions an alleged "Iron Cat General" deity purportedly worshiped in Fujian.

Shin Megami Tensei V	The god of prophecy in Taoist religion. It is said to have the head of a cat and the body of a human, and its shrine was located in Annam, which is present-day Vietnam. The shrine was meant for Mao Shangshu, a 14-15th century general who conquered Vietnam. However, because the name "Mao" is similar to the Chinese word for cat, the temple was effectively misnamed, and he was reborn as a different god. It should also be noted that there is a similar story about the god of sailing known as "Tetsu Neko Shogun."

A Neko Shogun is found in Hamamatsucho as part of the quest No Stone Unturned, asking for help gathering Life Stones as a reward for his retainers. Once the Nahobino gives him the requested Life Stones, he will reward him with the Wargod Talisman.
