Paimon is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Paimon is a spirit in European demonology first attested as the 27th spirit in the manuscript Plut. 89 sup. 38 of the Laurentian Library in Florence. Paimon or Paymon is a king more obedient to Lucifer than other kings, but is compelled by divine virtue. When he appears before the exorcist, he rides upon a camel wearing a crown and having an obscured face, and has attendants who play music with pipes and cymbals. His speech is incomprehensible unless the exorcist is without fear, whereupon Paimon can be understood clearly and will answer any question. He is knowledgeable of all science and philosophy, of arcane and occult matters, and of the fine details of the cosmos. He consecrates books, gives dignities, and can humiliate people and subject them to the exorcist's will; additionally, he gives the best of familiars and grants understanding of all birds. The exorcist must, however, face the north. Paimon was of the order of the Dominions or Powers, and he has forty legions which are a mix of Virtues and Powers; even if summoned alone, he demands a full offering as if all were present. He also always comes with kings named Belial and Basaam, and will come with 25 additional legions if he is compelled to by divine virtue.[1]

Paimon is later present as Poymon, the 5th spirit in the Livre des esperitz, where he is said to be a spirit in the likeness of a resplendent crowned woman riding upon a dromedary. The one who summons him must face the west. He answers questions truthfully, teaches all sciences, manifests hidden things, gives dignities and great lordships, and makes one's enemies submit utterly. He is the lord of 25 legions.[2]

Paimon is elaborated upon as Paymon, the 22nd spirit in Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which draws from earlier sources. Paymon is described similarly to Paimon's description in manuscript Plut. 89 sup. 38. He is said to be the king who obeys Lucifer the most, but he is compelled by divine virtue to stand before the exorcist. He has the appearance of a man with a woman's face and a shining crown riding upon a dromedary, and he is preceded by trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments. He will answer questions about philosophy, prudence, science, and other arcane things; he confers dignities and confirmations; he fetters those who resist him and subjects the exorcist; he provides servants; and he is knowledgeable in all arts. The exorcist must face the north and ask questions fearlessly. Paymon was either of the order of the Dominions or of the Cherubim. He has 200 legions that follow him, and they are a mix of Angels and Powers. If Paymon is summoned alone by a libation or sacrifice, he will be accompanied by two great kings named Bebal and Abalam, along with other Powers, and only 25 legions will be under his command, as the rest only follow him if compelled to by divine virtue.[3]

In the Ars Goetia section of The Lesser Key of Solomon, which is heavily based on the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, Paimon is said to be the 9th spirit summoned by King Solomon of Israel. The detail of having a woman's face is removed and the direction the exorcist must face is revised to be the northwest.[4] The latter change originates from Reginald Scot's English edition of the Pseudomonarchia.[3]

One of the 72 demons of the Goetia, he is called the "King of Dominions", and is depicted as a man with a woman's face, wearing a crown of jewels and riding a camel with a single hump. He is knowledgeable in the sciences, arts, and secrets, and can share that information in an instant, causing those who have gained his help to no longer put forth effort.
