Profile

Origin

In Greek mythology, Orthrus^[a] or Orthus^[b] is a two-headed, serpent-tailed dog who guarded Geryon's red cattle on the island of Erytheia and was killed by Heracles. He is the offspring of Echidna and Typhon, and the brother of the Lernaean Hydra, Cerberus and the Chimera.

According to Hesiod, Orthrus was the father of the Sphinx and the Nemean lion, although the identity of their mother, whether Echidna, the Chimera, or Ceto, is unclear.

Design

Despite being described as double-headed in folklore, Orthrus in Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II is depicted with a single head, featuring a long, flowing mane that extends from the head along the back and segmented orange plating resembling hardened scales or armor, contrasted with glossy dark-green skin visible at the joints and underside.

In Kyūyaku Megami Tensei, Orthrus’s plating is rendered in a brighter yellow tone that covers the shoulders, limbs, and back in large, shell-like segments resembling organic armor. The head is redesigned to have a skull-like appearance with deep-set red eyes.

In Shin Megami Tensei, Orthrus no longer has armor and is portrayed with purple fur, a large golden mane, and a long, segmented tail.

In Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, Orthrus has two heads, golden fur, a large blue mane, and a long, violet segmented tail.

Orthrus is encountered on the first floor of the Princess Hotel. If Hero speaks to him instead of attacking, he says that Pazuzu told him they were the messiahs and offers to join the party to kill the witch in Tokyo Tower. At Tokyo Tower, Orthrus breaks through the barrier and, when confronting the witch with the party, declares that he will succeed this time because he has the messiahs with him. The witch then reveals that Pazuzu deceived them, manipulating them into killing Bael on his behalf, and offers the Hero the option to side with her. If Hero accepts, Orthrus and Hero’s friend leave the party, and the witch joins the Hero.

Orthrus is encountered again in Shinjuku alongside Hero's former friend before confronting Pazuzu. He then orders Orthrus to attack Hero.

Orthrus appears as one of Raidou's Demons. It is first summoned in Chapter 1 in order to kill a Makami that was attacking an unnamed student.
