Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2, released outside of Japan as Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2, is a 2005 role-playing game for the PlayStation 2, and the second and final entry in the Digital Devil Saga series duology. It features new mechanics such as Berserk Mode and a changed Mantra grid system.

After leaving the Junkyard combat simulation, Serph wanders the streets and eventually reunites with Gale and Argilla. In the real world, the sun turns humans who do not have the demon virus to stone, and the surface has become a wasteland littered with petrified people. A repressive organization called the Karma Society governs, with an underground resistance group called the Lokapala fighting against them. After saving Cielo from Lokapala captivity, the Embryon seeks to save Sera from the Karma Society.

Devour them all, in order to live⸺ Embryon, lead by Serph, was supposed to have won the struggle of the Junkyard and put a stop to the fighting. However, the Junkyard vanishes, and comrades who saw eye to eye become scattered amidst a gruesome battle. In the setting of "Nirvana"―a land in which despair and the Black Sun both scorch the ruins―the Asura, who cannot survive except by devouring, will reach the truth at the end of the fighting.

The promised land was nothing but a new hell Serph, leader of the Embryon, wanders aimlessly through the lifeless streets before him. In the Junkyard, his tribe fought a gruesome war, hoping the light of heaven would relieve their suffering. In the end, Serph's world vanished, along with the comrades who stood by him. All that awaited him in Nirvana were endless streets littered with the silent remains of human statues.

A scattered Embryon discovers that Nirvana is not the promised paradise they had hoped for. What terrible secrets await Serph in this torn world?

Synopsis

The game is set shortly after the ending of Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner. The Embryon find themselves in an Earth plagued by a black Sun that turns most people to stone. Humanity has largely moved underground, with a chosen few residing under the protective dome of the Karma City. The unchosen are persecuted by the Karma Society, who send soldiers with Atma to hunt them for food. Serph, Argilla and Gale manage to find each other, and make an alliance with the underground humans to fight against the Karma Society in hopes of finding Sera once more.
