Shin Megami Tensei if...: Hazama Hen was a 2004 role-playing video game for mobile phones, and a spin-off prequel of Shin Megami Tensei if... in the Shin Megami Tensei series. It was developed and published by Atlus, releasing through the MegaTen α mobile website on May 26th, 2004.

The game follows Ideo Hazama, the antagonist of Shin Megami Tensei if..., and the events leading up to him becoming the Deity Emperor. An English translated script by Tiraremy exists.

On April 22, 2004, Atlus released a flash version prologue through MegaTen α, which showed an extended opening with images.[2][3] The prologue section on Chris' archived site[4] and Tyraremy's translation are the only known records that contain the rest of the exclusive story shown in this demo.

Synopsis

The story focuses on Hazama, who is the protagonist.

The Flash version prologue demo mentions he is a second-year-highschooler and gains the "Demon Summoning Program" through the net, which most people discard. He uses his intelligence to make use of it and find the Tower of Infinity in the Expanse, which he knew was a special place, and he hoped to gain power there to do as he pleases to the "stupid" people at his school.

Any other version starts with him opening the tower doors and then slamming behind him. He enters the tower and meets Amon, the demon he summoned to protect himself in the Expanse.

They learn that the Demon King (魔王) took control of the tower and sealed its pathways. Hazama and Amon make their way through the sections of the tower, called Baxes, defeating guardians of sealed gates along the way.

  • Apaosha in the First Bax.
  • Bushyasta in the Second Bax.
  • and Druj in the Third Bax.
    • Amon temporarily leaves to train shortly afterwards.

Then Hazama defeats Jahi in the Fourth Bax and Amon rejoins Hazama shortly afterwards. Then they find and defeat the Demon King, Angra Mainyu.

Hazama then wonders why he hasn't become all-powerful yet. Then he progresses to the Bax of Heaven. Here, he experiences several flashbacks regarding his past, including:

  • Students gossiping about his strange behavior.
  • Otsuki lecturing him about science and demons not being real.
  • His mother apologizing for abandoning him.
  • Kayama showing him concern and kindness.

At the top of the tower, Hazama faces and defeats its true ruler, Zurvan. He gains omnipotence and the power to split his mind from his body. Hazama terminates his contract with Amon and ends him by ripping his soul from his body.

Although his inner voice states that his lingering human resentment and longing for connection prevent him from ruling over everything as a true god, Hazama takes control of the tower and proclaims himself the Deity Emperor, ruler of the Expanse.

In the expert ending, Stephen appears to make a request, but Hazama turns him down.

Gameplay

This gameplay section is a stub. You can help Megami Tensei Wiki by expanding it.
No reason provided.

As the protagonist, Hazama is able to learn magic throughout the game by either leveling up or progressing through certain story related events, and he's able to power up his sword through sacrificing demons.

The map is said to be similar to the map for Akira's route.

Hazama may find Sebek, Hathor, and Thoth within the tower and fight them to get them to join.

There were three different versions of the game made for different phone builds, the MegaTen α version for Docomo and Foma phones, the Vodafone version[5], and the EZ app (BREW) version for au phones.[6] The balancing for the EZ app version was different due to skill acquisition being different with Hazama not learning magic upon level up and Amon not learning magic at all. The EZ app version was stated to be notably harder than the other versions.[7][8]

The only known record of Hazama Hen's innermost gameplay mechanics are on Chris' archived site.[9]

Trivia

  • In Draft, this scenario was an additional storyline that would be unlocked and playable after clearing the game.[10]
  • The idea for this scenario was inspired by Shu Shirakawa's scenario in Super Robot Taisen Ex.[11]
  • The original concept had Hazama face various forms of himself and reject his humanity. There would've been events like Hazama getting hurt from being too kind and people hating him for being a jerk.[12]
  • Kazuma Kaneko wasn't present to give any input on it while it was developed as a mobile game.[13]
  • Zurvan was something that was added as a concept during the mobile game development stage since he wasn't part of Kaneko's original concept.[14]
  • The game was advertised with QR codes that came with Digital Devil Saga (Avatar Tuner) in Japan.
  • The font for names is different between some of the releases, with one of the au phones with the EZ app version using half-width kana while the Vodafone version was shown using full width kana. However, there is a font discrepancy with the EZweb's screenshots of the game, with their version on their site showing full-width kana.
  • The app icon for the EZ app version was a picture of Hazama and the Atlus logo as they appear on the title screen, while the Vodafone version used a picture of a Hazama Jack Frost with Amon behind him.
  • There were promotional cards featuring Hazama Hen that were given away at a Tokyo Game Show event after trying the app.
  • There was a promotional section in a book featuring Hazama Hen and other MegaTen α games.[15]
  • Hazama Hen got first place in a survey conducted by Dengeki asking which feature phone games people wanted to see revived by G-Mode Archives.[16]
