Pottery depicting Heracles' battle with Geryon (right) (c. 540 BC)
In Greek mythology, Geryon or Geryone is a giant who lived on the island of Erytheia. He was the son of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe, the grandson of Medusa, and the nephew of Pegasus. Geryon is often depicted as having either three bodies and three heads, three heads and one body, or three bodies and one head. He owned the two-headed hound Orthrus, who guarded his herd of red cattle. Heracles killed Orthrus and the herdsman Eurytion, then slew Geryon at the River Anthemus with an arrow dipped in the venomous blood of the Lernaean Hydra. He subsequently took the red cattle to complete his tenth labor.
