A monster from Greek mythology. Her upper half is a beautiful woman while her lower half is a spotted snake, and her name means "She-Viper". She gave birth to the most number of monstrous offspring in Greek mythology, including Cerberus, Orthrus, Hydra, Chimera and Ladon. She used her human half to lure unsuspecting travelers to her and devour them soon after. She was considered immortal according to some, but others also said that she was killed at the hands of the hundred-eyed giant, Argus.

Echidna is a demon working with the Ring of Gaea to halt the Messians' plans of building a Basilica to summon the God of Law. When the Hero meets her in Tokyo Destinyland, which is built atop her as her body is large enough to support the structure,[1][2][3] she tells him about the Messians' plans and about how the God of Law banished other deities to the Expanse in the distant past,[4] believing only more suffering can occur if He is successfully summoned. She asks him to slay Aniel, one of the angels overseeing the Basilica's construction who resides in Shinagawa, in hopes that his death will halt the Basilica's construction.[a] If the Hero goes through with the deed, Echidna will be pleased and asks that the Hero continue to assist the Gaeans in their plans. If the Hero refuses or is Law-aligned to begin with, Echidna will be outraged and attack him only to be slayed in return. However, if the Hero accepts the request, she will connect a bridge from Destinyland to the Basilica for him.
Visionary
Echidna is featured in the one Visionary cutscene in the Game Boy Advance and iOS versions of the game.
In "Dog Collar," Echidna encounters Pascal as Cerberus. As the mother of Cerberus, Echidna demands she serves her, though Pascal continuously tries to refuse her as she is still loyal to the Hero, who she aimlessly searches for in the aftermath of the Great Cataclysm. Fed up with her talks of a different master, Echidna poisons Pascal to erase her memories of him and assigns her to be her gatekeeper, leaving Pascal to feebly cry out for the Hero.
End of spoilers.
Trivia
- Echidna is Chaos-aligned in Shin Megami Tensei, despite being a member of the Vile race which is otherwise classified as the Dark-Law alignment. This reflects her role in the story.
- There is leftover unused data for Echidna as a demon in Shin Megami Tensei: Nine. She is of the Drake race and is level 73.
