Law Hero

Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Law Hero is the title of a playable character in Shin Megami Tensei.

Law Hero does not have a default name in-game. During the development of Shin Megami Tensei, he was called Yoshio among the game's staff.[2] He also has this name in the short comic within the Shin Megami Tensei Law & Chaos Disc booklet. In the short stories included in Shin Megami Tensei Character Profile: Steven Report, he was given the name Yuji.

Profile

Law Hero lives in Kichijoji and is characterized as a kind and devoted youth who wishes to help the weak. He grew up in a family of musicians and wants to become a maestro like his father. He is described as good-looking, making him popular among women, and is an honor student and athlete as well.[3] He later joins the Hero to search for his missing girlfriend and fight the demons plaguing Tokyo. True to his namesake, he represents the Law alignment.

Gameplay

Shin Megami Tensei

Like the Hero, Law Hero initially begins with 5 points in each of his six main stats, with an additional 18 stat points for the player to invest into any stat of their choosing. Law Hero's stats are customized immediately after he is named during the Hero's dream at the beginning of the game. He later joins the Hero's party upon their meeting at the Hospital.

The Law Hero learns magic skills based on his current level, Intelligence, and Magic when calculated upon leveling up. The equated numerical value determines which skill is learned. This formula is calculated as:

Game Appearances

Shin Megami Tensei

At the beginning of the game, when the Hero is having his first dream, he comes across a crucified astral body meant to be Law Hero and a Messenger of God. The Messenger describes him as a soul devoted to God and prompts the Hero to call out his name. After receiving a name, Law Hero awakens in a dazed state, and, feeling that there is something he is meant to do, joins the Hero, convinced he can find his purpose if he accompanies him. The next time the Hero dreams, Law Hero, along with Chaos Hero, rejoins his party as he explores the dreamscape, and at the end of the dream, the group stumbles across a ritual where a girl is about to be sacrificed. If the Hero does not try to save her, Law Hero will admonish him for leaving the girl to die. He again accompanies the Hero when they are pulled into the vision given by the Old Man in Kichijoji.

When the Hero is falsely arrested and taken to a holding cell in the hospital, he finally meets Law Hero in person, who explains that he was arrested when he was fighting off demons while looking for his girlfriend, who has gone missing. Right after this, a hospital worker opens their cell to take them to surgery, giving Law Hero the opportunity to quickly incapacitate him and allowing the party to venture further into the hospital. After the two heroes escape the building, they go to the Shopping Arcade where they come across a young man being assaulted by Ozawa and his gang, which Law Hero cannot stand to see and so steps in to stop. Though this makes Ozawa's gang leave, Law Hero is off-put by the young man's ungrateful attitude and asks the Hero what they should do with him, revealing their names to the young man, who, finally recognizing them, reveals himself as Chaos Hero and joins their party. When the group goes to the Hero's house and is confronted by the Hero's Mother, both Law Hero and Chaos Hero pick up that something is off about her, and in the aftermath of Amanojaku's defeat, Law Hero attempts to console the Hero about his mother's death.

Later, when the party meets the Heroine in Shinjuku Underground, Law Hero is shocked to find out she shares her name with his girlfriend and discovers from her that Gotou is the one responsible for her disappearance, as he ordered for every girl sharing the Heroine's name to be captured, and so gladly volunteers to assist the Resistance when asked. After the Heroine is kidnapped, the party can go to the Shinjuku West Building where they encounter Ozawa again. Law Hero tries to force Ozawa to reveal where his girlfriend is being kept, but Ozawa escapes before he can get any answers from him. After the Heroine is rescued, Law Hero leaves the party to search for his girlfriend using the information provided by the Heroine.

When the Great Cataclysm occurs, Law Hero is spared from being caught in its destruction by the Heroine's Traport, which sends him and the other heroes to the Diamond Realm. Once reunited with the Hero and Chaos Hero, the party heads back to En no Ozuno and carries out tasks for him in order to be sent back to Tokyo. For En no Ozuno's final tasks, he sends the Hero to confront two Phantoms, while he pulls Law and Chaos Hero aside to do their own undisclosed tasks separately. If the Hero is Law-aligned, the Red Phantom[a] turns into an unknown figure wearing white robes. When the group returns to Tokyo, they come across a beggar who pleads for some money. If the Hero refuses to give him money at first, Law Hero will feel sorry for the beggar and encourage him to give the beggar some money. In the Shinjuku area, the party can optionally view an Aurora Vision screen where a Messian girl preaches about the Great Cataclysm. Law Hero encourages them to listen to the entire sermon to gather information, and they become shocked to learn that 30 years have passed since they had been sent to the Diamond Realm. After the party retreats from their first encounter with Ozawa's demon, Law Hero is appalled when Chaos Hero expresses his idea of fusing with a demon, believing that there is no point in beating Ozawa if he has to sacrifice his humanity to do it.

Law Hero continues to accompany the Hero wordlessly until they reach Roppongi. If the party explores the area they can find a jail cell holding Law Hero's Girlfriend, still alive and identical to how she looked in 199X, much to Law Hero's bewilderment. His girlfriend explains that while she died in the Great Cataclysm, she was resurrected as an immortal Bodyconian and then imprisoned due to her retaining her memories as a human. Not wishing to remain in this state anymore, she pleads for the party to use a Balm of Life on her, the only thing that can kill a bodyconian. If the Hero uses a Balm of Life her,[b] she passes on, leaving Law Hero to lament that their reunion was not supposed to end this way. When the party tries to leave Roppongi after Belial is sealed, Nebiros stops them and tries to take the Hero's soul, and with barely any time to react, Law Hero pushes the Hero out of the way and is killed instead. As the party chases Nebiros down to the bottom floor, they can find Law Hero's soul dwelling in one of the rooms, who pleads for them to defeat Nebiros, as he has already reanimated his body, which is relaxing in the disco oblivious to what happened to it. After Nebiros's defeat, Law Hero's soul appears and thanks Hero for setting him free.[c] He then bids him goodbye as a messenger of god appears to guide his soul to heaven.

When passing through the Roppongi Underpass, the Hero is again visited by Law Hero's soul, who asks him to stop someone trying to reactivate the robot police in the Old Police HQ. He gives him directions to Ginza and the Police HQ and disappears.

God later resurrects Law Hero, who becomes the Messian Church's new Messiah and now sports an appearance identical to the white-robed figure the Red Phantom transforms into if the Hero was law-aligned in the Diamond Realm. He resides in Shingawa, where a statue of him can also be found, and when the Hero meets him again, he explains his revival and his desire to make the peaceful world of the Millennium Kingdom a reality, then requests that the Hero slay Echidna, as she conspires to destroy the Messians' Basilica. If the Hero accepts the request,[d] he will slay Echidna and return to a jubilant Law Hero who calls forth Aniel to inform him of the good news. If the Hero agrees to continue working for the Messians, Law Hero will be pleased and promises to see him again soon. However, if the Hero refuses Aniel's request to work for the Messians, or if he was Chaos-aligned when he received Law Hero's request, he must defeat Aniel, which upsets Law Hero, who tells him his misuse of his power will be the death of him as he retreats.

On the Law route, Law Hero will be in the Basilica's Law area and asks the Hero to defeat the Four Devas, as they are in the way of God's Millennium Kingdom. After they are defeated and the Hero returns to Law Hero, the Great Flood occurs, which Law Hero describes as God's wrath cleansing Tokyo of evil. After the Hero returns from seeing Tokyo's flooded state, Law Hero asks him to aid their ally Vishnu in his fight against Ravana at the Government Office. When the Hero returns, Law Hero has gone to the Basilica's central area, where he informs the Hero of the Chaotic army's occupation of the bottom floors and that Asura Lord must be slain to take back control of the Basilica. Once the Hero has recruited the three Archangels, Law Hero then sends him off to fuse the Angel Ring that will permit them access to Asura Lord. After the Hero has fused the Angel Ring and goes to the door leading to the bottom floor, he finds Law Hero dead at Chaos Hero's feet, having been killed in a fight against him. In the Law ending, the Messenger of God tells the party not to mourn Law Hero, as he is now in heaven at God's side.

On the Neutral route, Law Hero can be found near the Basilica's central area, arguing with Chaos Hero and attempting to convince the Hero to join his side. He will still ask the Hero to slay the Four Devas and assist Vishnu, but when the Hero slays Vishnu instead, Law Hero gives up on trying to convince the Hero to join him and tells him that the next time they meet, it will be as enemies. The Hero's next encounter with Law Hero varies based on the route as he reaches the door leading to Michael's floor. If the Hero is on the Chaos route, Law Hero appears after Chaos Hero dies from using the Demon Ring, and expresses his pity at his fate. However, he believes it is a worthy end for one who defies God and bids the Hero goodbye as he tells him he will be next to perish. If the Hero is on the Neutral route, Law Hero instead tells him that humans are weak and misguided and that the Hero himself is misguided in thinking that aligning with neither Law nor Chaos is a viable option. He finds it regrettable that he refused to be persuaded, but he states he cannot wait any longer for him, and declares that, as power without God creates demons, the Hero himself has become a demon that he must slay. Regardless of either route, Law Hero attacks the Hero but is defeated. He realizes that instead of being God's chosen one, he was merely a sacrifice to him as he dies.

Visionaries

Law Hero is featured in three Visionary cutscenes in the Game Boy Advance and iOS versions of the game.

In "Chipped Cup," Law Hero is on a date with his girlfriend when he notices her smiling. Though she says it's due to how happy she gets from seeing him, Law Hero gets confused, as he's serious all the time, oblivious to his popularity with women. When his girlfriend says she wants to be with him forever, Law Hero shares the sentiment but hesitates, going on to explain that he has had strange dreams recently that make him think he has something he is meant to do. His girlfriend gets frightened by his explanation, however, so Law Hero quickly apologizes.

In "Silver Cup," Law Hero's soul is in the afterlife after being killed by Count Black. As he laments that his efforts to guide the weak with the Hero were all for naught, Gabriel appears to refute him and explains that God and he have been watching over him. Gabriel offers Law Hero another chance at life, this time as a messenger of God to lead people to the Millennium Kingdom, which Law Hero eagerly accepts.

In "Child's Book," a young Law Hero is engrossed in a book when a girl approaches him and asks what it is about. He explains that it is about the Messiah, who appeared during a time of war and suffering to help the weak. He explains that the Messiah is not exactly God but rather a different person who works on God's behalf. The girl quickly gets confused by his explanation, however, and leaves, which Law Hero accepts since he still has fun reading about it. He goes on to think about how amazing it would be for the weak to be saved simply through prayer, and wishes he could be someone who did that.

End of spoilers.

Trivia

  • In Aeon Genesis's English translation patch for Shin Megami Tensei, Law Hero's attempts to comfort the Hero come off as careless and insincere, and are followed by a harsh admonishing from Chaos Hero. However, in other translations, including the officially translated iOS script, this is revealed to be a misnomer, as his attitude is far more tactful and sympathetic regarding the situation.[5][6]
