The Tokyo of 199X is a location in Shin Megami Tensei and the overworld at the beginning of the game. It is split between two isolated sections—Kichijoji, where the Hero's quest begins; and a larger section consisting of several districts, including Shinjuku, Ichigaya, Yotsuya, and others.

The Tokyo overworld in Shin Megami Tensei has three phases stretched across major events. This article covers first phase of the Tokyo overworld set during the year 199X.

Gameplay

Tokyo serves as the game's overworld, interconnecting all of its locations within. In the year 199X, Tokyo is split between the isolated Kichijoji and another isolated section consisting of Akasaka,Super Famicom version only Ichigaya, Jingu Gaien, Sendagaya, Shinjuku, Shinanomachii, Yotsuya, and Yoyogi. Travel between these portions are restricted due to barricades placed around their outskirts. Initially, no random encounters appear in Tokyo; however, after the Hero meets the Heroine in his dreams, Demons start appearing throughout the city.

Following the Great Cataclysm and an estimated 40 years later, the city is radically transformed into the ruinous Tokyo of 203X. The city's geography changes significantly and most locations from 199X are no longer accessible; however, this also opens up the overworld for full exploration.

The city changes a second time late into the game when God's wrath completely floods Tokyo. The city becomes entirely submerged and renders the vast majority of previous locations inaccessible, leaving just the Basilica and a couple other remote locations as the sole surviving landmarks.

End of spoilers.
