Origin
An asura lord[a] is a leader of the asuras.[1]
The Asura Lord of the Megami Tensei franchise is identified with Vairocana, a celestial Buddha.[2][3][b] The franchise has also identified the Asura Lord with Ahura Mazda,[2] presumably because the Sanskrit word असुर asura is cognate with the Avestan word 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 ahura. These connections are most evident in Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon.
Design
Asura Lord's design is based on the Ashura statue in the Kōfukuji temple in Nara Prefecture.[2]

Trivia
- There is unused data in Shin Megami Tensei for a non-boss version of Asura.
- In the internal data of Shin Megami Tensei, Michael and Asura's alignments appear to be swapped; Michael has an alignment of 240 (Chaos) and Asura has an alignment of 10 (Law). However, the correct alignments are displayed in A-Mode DDS of the GBA version.
- Michael and Asura's stats and skills are swapped in the Shin Megami Tensei Mega-CD analyze menu;[4] they use their normal stats and skills in gameplay. This may have been done because of the alignments.

Notes
- ↑ Sanskrit: असुरेन्द्र, romanized asurendra, compound of Sanskrit असुर asura ("titan; demigod; antigod") + इन्द्र indra ("lord").
- ↑ There is likely an intermediate connection via Virocana, an asura king who was the son of Prahlāda and father of Balī; this is not stated explicitly in official profiles, though it is implied in Kaneko Works I with it saying the Asura King is an enemy of Indra.
