The Messian Church, known as the Order of Messiah in the PlayStation 2 localization of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, is a recurring religious group in the Shin Megami Tensei series. The Messians are devout followers of God and believe that He will save them from disaster through prayer.[1] A core belief of the Church is that God will send a Messiah who will usher in a new age of peace and prosperity,[2] known as the Millennium Kingdom or the Thousand-Year Kingdom,[3] while those who reject God will perish. The Messian Church values peace and equality through rigorous order and discipline, deemed necessary for their continued survival. As such, the Messian Church embodies the Law Alignment.

The Messiah Church's principles are in conflict with the Ring of Gaea, another recurring group in the series who instead value freedom and oppose a singular God. The two groups are often seen at war with one another.

In some games, followers of the Messian Church are encountered as Recruitable Humans, in which "Messian" is used as a Demon Race.

  1. "Messian: Good morning, everyone. It's time for "Good Morning Messiah." Let us begin another day by offering our prayers to the Lord. God is always watching over us. He will never forsake us. And those who believe in Him shall receive salvation. It is written in the Messian Holy Book, chapter 3, verse 2... That the Lord extended His hand to believers and cast out their sickness. The Lord will ease our pain and burden. We are faced now with suffering, because of the demons' minions. But the Lord is with us. We must not give into despair. Man is a weak creature... If one lived by one's strength alone, the elderly, women, and children would perish. And there is no future in a ruined world where children cannot survive. It is written in the Messian Holy Book, chapter 4, verse 8... Food flowed from the Lord's hands, and all the children who ate it were refreshed. There is a bright future in store even for the weak if they accept God's grace. Now, let us pray to the Lord as one. Believe in Him. Pray to Him. May everything be as the Lord wishes..." Shin Megami Tensei (iOS).

Notes

  1. In the Super Famicom and Super CD-ROM² versions, which spell races in katakana and have a six-character limit, it is shortened as メシアキョウ Meshia kyō in the UI, but also use メシアキョウト Meshia kyōto in other instances where the full seven-character name is allowed (such as when encountering enemies).
