The Chaos Hero is the title of a playable character in Shin Megami Tensei.
Chaos Hero does not have a default name in-game. During development of Shin Megami Tensei, he was called Waruo among the game's staff.[1] He also has this name in the short comic within the Shin Megami Tensei Law & Chaos Disc booklet. In the short stories included in Shin Megami Tensei Character Profile: Steven Report, he was given the name Takeshi.
Profile
Chaos Hero is a young man who seeks revenge against Ozawa and his gang after being assaulted by them. He accompanies the Hero in combating Tokyo's demons to grow stronger. True to his namesake, he represents the Chaos Alignment in the game.
Gameplay
Like the Hero, Chaos Hero initially begins with 5 points in each of his six main stats, with an additional 18 stat points for the player to invest into any stat of their choosing. Chaos Hero's stats are customized immediately after he is named during the Hero's dream at the beginning of the game. He later joins the Hero's party upon their meeting in the Shopping Arcade after the events at the Hospital.
The Chaos Hero learns magic skills based on his current level, Intelligence, and Magic when calculated upon leveling up. The equated numerical value determines which skill is learned. This formula is calculated as:

Following the party's flight from Minakata in Ozawa's office, Chaos Hero has the idea to fuse himself with a demon, and at the Cathedral of Shadows, he will fuse himself with the most chaotically-aligned demon in the party.
In the game's post-end, a man outside of Old Shinjuku indirectly references the Chaos Hero and the other two Heroes by recounting how three men had come to Tokyo from the Diamond Realm.[2]
In if..., Chaos Hero appears as a rare fiend encounter and can be obtained as a rare Guardian.
Chaos Hero's silhouette is seen alongside the other heroes when they are mentioned in the opening.
In the 2020s section of the Akarana Corridor, when Raidou interacts with the hourglass in the 2020s section, he sees a vision that includes three young warriors struggling for survival,[3] indirectly referencing Chaos Hero and the other two heroes.
End of spoilers.
Trivia
- In order to have his pre-fused sprite show in the fusion animation, there is data for the Chaos Hero as a "boss" (though he does not have proper stats). This one is named わるお Waruo.
Nomenclature
Chaos Hero's developmental name, Waruo, may be a pun on 悪い warui, meaning "bad" or "sinful."
