Gotou, full name Kimio Gotou in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, is a character in the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Origin

Gotou was inspired by the Japanese author Yukio Mishima.

Design

The PlayStation version of Shin Megami Tensei had an all-new artwork of Gotou in his Self-Defense Forces uniform. His rank insignia is visible, signifying that he is an ittō rikusa, which is equivalent to a colonel in the American military. He was originally designed to wear a uniform even before the PlayStation version, but Kazuma Kaneko drew him naked because he was a man burning with ambition.

Shin Megami Tensei (A-Mode DDS)	Origin: Japan The Japanese Self-Defense Force general. He came into contact with demons through the Terminal system. It was thus that he learned of God's plan for the Millennium Kingdom, spurring his rebellion.

Before the start of the game, Gotou comes into contact with the Terminal systems and through its connection to the Expanse, he begins to summon demons en masse to combat the Americans occupying Tokyo and restore the old gods to their former glory. He uses the demons to erect a barrier around Tokyo and starts a successful coup d'état to take control of the JSDF, after which he imposes martial law on the city. He also orders the JSDF, along with his subordinates Yuriko and Ozawa, to capture and detain any female that shares the name of the leader of the Resistance, as they are getting in the way of his efforts in fighting the American troops and the only information they have of her is her name. When the Hero finally confronts him in Camp Ichigaya, he excuses his actions by revealing the secret conspiracy he is trying to prevent, the Tokyo Annihilation Project, which he claims is a ploy by the God of Law to use the Americans' nuclear weapons to eradicate Japan, all with the ultimate goal of creating the Millenium Kingdom, a world of peace that only the few chosen by God will be allowed to live in.

Gotou asks the Hero to join him in his mission and requests that he confront the American Ambassador Thorman at the Embassy to stop any nuclear warheads from being launched at the city. Should his request be refused, Gotou will engage him in battle, only to perish. If the request is accepted, however, Gotou offers his gratitude and sends the Hero on his way, though he dies when ICBMs hit Tokyo.

After Gotou's death, Ozawa takes over Gotou's territory in Shinjuku by defeating the local yakuza.

Visionaries

Gotou is featured in two Visionary cutscenes in the Game Boy Advance and iOS versions of the game.

In "SDF Unit Pin", Gotou relieves the JSDF Chief of Staff of their command by force.

In "Megaphone", Gotou makes a speech to the coup forces about his ideals.

Shin Megami Tensei II

Gotou's soul can be found within Makai's Chesed Temple as one of the many individuals being granted salvation by Vairocana. He still regrets that all of his hard work toward his dream was shattered by two youths.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nine

Inside the Ring of Gaea base, there is a statue dedicated to Gotou, honoring his work to spread the word of Gaea and his opposition to ambassador Thorman.

Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation

Gotou is briefly mentioned in the manual of the game as being one of the persons responsible for Tokyo's current state.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine

Gotou possesses Ogami's body to continue the fight, but is stopped by the protagonist.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner

Gotou is referenced on the news as being arrested for stockpiling a large amount of weapons and confessing that he intended to take an action for change. The police are considering conducting a psychiatric evaluation on Gotou due to multiple testimonies mentioning his actions being weird as of late. His full name is revealed to be "Kimio Gotou".

"Gotou Kaigenrei Shireikan: Zanshō no Mato"

Gotou is the protagonist of the short story "Gotou Kaigenrei Shireikan: Zanshō no Mato" included in the booklet of Shin Megami Tensei Law & Chaos Disc. In this short story, as Gotou waits for The Hero and Heroine to return, he reflects over his past.

Gotou believed his role was complete after having served many years for his country. However, he began to notice the deterioration of values across Japan. Additionally, many people came to him with complaints and concerns over things to come. This caused Gotou great worry, and he began to see terrifying visions of the future.

One day, a woman came to him and offered Gotou new life and a chance to change the future. Gotou accepted this offer and pledged his soul to the woman, who revealed her identity as Lilith.

Gotou then woke up in a hospital bed next to a beautiful woman who was apparently his wife; however, Gotou had no recollection of this woman or his own past. Nursed back to health by his wife, he returned to work for the Defense Agency, doing experiments with antimatter and teleportation. When his wife gave birth to their daughter, Gotou was overjoyed. He then remembered everything and realized this happiness was a reward. Stepping outside the hospital room for a moment, he encountered a woman named Yuriko.

Having finished his reflection, he realizes there is little time left before Thorman launches the ICBM, Gotou's plan having failed. He thinks to himself that despite their role in spoiling his plan, he cannot hate The Hero and Heroine, and if he hates anyone it would be "that woman" who knew what would happen from the beginning; he quickly buries this thought. Hearing commotion and gunfire, he prepares for his final battle and cries out in defiance towards God.

Shin Megami Tensei: Final Story

Gotou's appearance in Shin Megami Tensei: Final Story is identical to that in Shin Megami Tensei's story.

Trivia

• Kazuma Kaneko claimed that Self-Defense Forces committing a coup, Gotou broadcasting using the Aurora Vision, and the Heroine being held for a public execution were all originally his ideas.

• Gotou's duties as a colonelittō rikusa included serving as the commander of the 32nd infantry regiment of the 1st division of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces.

• In Chapter 3 of Shin Megami Tensei: Nine, "Gotou" is the password required to access the Ring of Gaea headquarters.

Nomenclature

With the kanji spelling used in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, his surname (五島, meaning "five islands") is very similar when written to that of Yukio Mishima (三島, meaning "three islands"). His given name Kimio (公夫) may be derived from the first character of Mishima's birth name Kimitake (公威) and the last character of his pen name Yukio (由紀夫).
