Tohru Adachi is a supporting character in Persona 4. He is a detective who was transferred to the Inaba Police Department in the spring of 2011 and was assigned to work under Ryotaro Dojima. Together, the two of them investigate the recent murders that kick off the events of the game.
Profile
Adachi is a 27-year-old detective formerly stationed in a larger, unnamed city. In spring, he transferred to the rural city of Inaba due to an unspecified mistake he made. Adachi looks down on his reassignment, Inaba, and the people who live there. Due to this attitude, he does not take his job seriously and can frequently be found slacking off at Junes during the afternoon. Furthermore, Adachi often slips up when talking, leading to him saying things he should not have said. These traits earn him the ire of his boss, Ryotaro Dojima, who responds to Adachi's behavior by giving him grunt work like doing paperwork or trailing the protagonist and his friends around the Central Shopping District.
Throughout his appearances, Adachi is presented with an unserious and comedic attitude, often reacting with exaggerated shock to the things around him. Though he is made out to be an incompetent rookie detective, at times, he does demonstrate an understanding of laws and protocols, and he is said to have been an elite officer at his previous station. In his Persona 4 Golden exclusive Social Link, the protagonist learns Adachi used to be a good student and that he is good with his hands and can do coin tricks. He is associated with food in his Social Link and his narration in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, as well as by fans due to his NPC dialogue about cabbages.[5][6]
Adachi is characterized as someone who puts in little effort and generally finds things troublesome, believing that you only get back as much effort as you put in. This attitude extends to other aspects of his life and how people see him: other characters use words like languid to describe him,[7] the protagonist learns he usually makes cup noodles for dinner simply because it takes less effort,[8] and Adachi admits he is lonely, but he also thinks being alone is easier.[9] Overall, he is someone who is dissatisfied with his life but does not put in the effort to change it.
Adachi wears a dark suit with a red tie and brown field boots. His appearance is messy, with bedhead hair and a crooked tie. Character designer Shigenori Soejima gave Adachi his unkempt appearance to show he is truly an elite. Soejima believed that an elite like Adachi would be capable but lacking in other areas, such as physical appearance.[10][11] His red tie is a hand-me-down from Dojima, who got tired of seeing Adachi in the shabby tie he wore before.[12] His Persona 4 Arena Ultimax character art mentions he wears a silver business watch on his right wrist.[13] However, this is not present or labeled on Soejima's original character art for Persona 4.[14]

Game Appearances
Persona 4
April - November, 2011
Adachi first appears on April 12th, running to throw up after seeing the corpse of Mayumi Yamano. From then on, the protagonist and his friends continue to run into Adachi as they investigate the recent murders. On April 16th, Adachi and Dojima are on the field investigating the murders. They have no suspect, and despite Adachi thinking it came from Taro Namatame's affair, both he and his wife Misuzu Hiiragi have alibis.[15] On April 17th, the protagonist and Yosuke Hanamura get seen with weapons at Junes and brought to the police station. While on their way out, they meet Adachi. After hearing that they are friends with Yukiko Amagi, Adachi brings up her disappearance and how this is concerning since there have been dead bodies on foggy days.[16] As the conversation goes on, rather than treating Yukiko as a victim, Adachi suggests that she had a motive to murder Mayumi Yamano.[17]
Whenever the protagonist, Yosuke, and Chie Satonaka save Yukiko from the TV World, Adachi shows up with Dojima at the Dojima residence that night and formally introduces himself to the protagonist and Nanako Dojima. He remembers that the protagonist is friends with Yukiko and lets him know Yukiko has returned home. He raises suspicions about Yukiko again, but Dojima says that idea was a fantasy.[18] On April 30th, Adachi appears in the Junes food court when the Investigation Team is there and is taken back by Chie's straightforward inquiry about the murders. His ramblings about Saki Konishi and Misuzu Hiiragi give Chie the impression that the police are going to be useless in solving the murder cases.
On June 22nd, he gets assigned to traffic duty outside of Rise Kujikawa's family's tofu shop due to the Inaba Police Department being short-handed. Later that same day, he and Dojima return to Marukyu Tofu and talk to Rise. Dojima becomes suspicious when he hears that the protagonist, Yosuke, and Kanji Tatsumi spoke to Rise earlier and warned her that something might happen to her. As a result, Adachi appears on June 23rd after being ordered by Dojima to tail the Investigation Team while sarcastically claiming otherwise.[19] Adachi pretends he only ran into them by chance and is surprised when Chie invites him to go to Marukyu Tofu with them.[20] During the stakeout, Yukiko points out that there is a man on a telephone pole with a camera, and Adachi arrests him and takes him in for questioning under the assumption that he is the murderer. On the day the Investigation Team rescues Rise from the TV World, both Dojima and Adachi will again appear at the Dojima residence. This time, Dojima is drunk and ranting about Naoto Shirogane, Adachi's incompetence, and the protagonist showing up at crime scenes.
In late July, after the police suspect in the murder case goes missing, the protagonist finds Adachi slacking off at Junes. The protagonist promises not to tell Dojima about this so long as Adachi tells him about the suspect. Adachi agrees and lets the protagonist know that the suspect used to have a part-time job in the shopping district. Adachi shows up at the Dojima residence again on August 13th to celebrate Mitsuo Kubo's arrest and the end of the murder case. He steals the only piece of sea urchin from the sushi platter and brings up the possibility that the real killer might be out there before Dojima tells him to shut up.[21] On the day Naoto is rescued from the TV, Adachi is drunk at the Dojima residence. He talks about Naoto showing up safely. He also mentions that the police cannot pin any of the murders besides Kinshiro Morooka on Kubo and Dojima's detective intuition might be correct about the killer still being out there.[22]
On November 5th, Adachi is present when Dojima takes the protagonist to the police station after the second threatening letter arrives. In the interrogation room, Adachi hears the protagonist's explanation about the TV World. After Dojima leaves to look for Nanako, the Investigation Team convinces Adachi to let the protagonist leave the police station by determining that the culprit might be a delivery truck driver. Adachi shares with them that Taro Namatame, who was having an affair with Mayumi, fits this description. At the scene of Dojima and Namatame's car crash, Naoto reads that the murder victims, as well as the kidnapped people whose names were not released to the public, are all written in Namatame's journal. In response, Adachi proclaims that the case must be over.[23]
On November 21st, after the news of Namatame being the murderer spreads through Inaba, Adachi runs into the Investigation Team while they walk to school. He informs them that the police have been reading Namatame's diary, and think he might have been hitting on Saki. Hearing this angers Yosuke.[24]
December 3 - 5, 2011
On December 3rd, Adachi tells the Investigation Team there is no way the story about the TV World will hold up in court and that Namatame might walk free. After Nanako flatlines, Adachi points out that Dojima is headed towards Namatame's room, and later takes his boss back to his own room. When Adachi returns to Namatame's room, he finds the Investigation Team there. Naoto claims they were doing Adachi a favor by watching over Namatame. The Investigation Team then steps outside to discuss the case. Adachi comes out after them, saying they might want to keep their voices down as he overheard what they were saying.[25]
On December 5th, the Investigation Team gathers at Aiya to discuss the case and who the culprit could be. The protagonist can bring up Adachi as a possible suspect: He is a detective connected to the murder case and could drop off the threatening letters at Dojima's house without raising suspicions since he is a family friend. Something about Adachi is bothering Naoto, but the detetective is unable to identify what it is. At first, Yukiko does not believe it could be Adachi because he showed up at the Amagi Inn in April, claiming he was assigned to protect Mayumi. But hearing about this previously unknown detail surprises Naoto, who was previously working on the case alongside the police, and it is left ambiguous if Adachi was telling Yukiko the truth or not back in April.[26] Kanji also brings up something suspicious he heard about Adachi but admits he did not think much of it because Adachi is an officer.[27]
The Investigation Team shows up at the hospital to question Adachi after finding out that he had Namatame moved, which officers alluded to on the previous day.[28] Dojima finds this uncharacteristic of Adachi since, up until now, he has been slacking on his detective work.[29] The protagonist and Naoto continue asking Adachi about the case until he lashes out, asking why they are questioning him if they already know that Namatame put everyone in. Hearing this makes Naoto think back to November 5th when Naoto read "I put [her] in" from Namatame's diary, referring to Nanako.[c] In the conversation following this, when Naoto read the names from Namatame's diary and said the victims who had yet to be released to the public were also written in the diary, Adachi did not find that strange, and said that the case was over. But from working on the case with the Inaba PD, Naoto was aware that the police were not treating the people who had gone missing recently as victims related to the murders.[34] Consequently, Adachi gets exposed as the real culprit behind the murders due to his impatience in trying to convict Namatame. In response, Adachi runs away and enters the TV World through the TV in Namatame's former hospital room.
December 7, 2011
On December 7th, a recently returned Teddie sniffs out Adachi in the remnant of Mayumi Yamano's dungeon.[35] The Investigation Team finds Adachi talking to himself about Mayumi and catches him off guard.[36] Yosuke asks for answers, and Adachi explains his side of the story through a combination of his own narration to the Investigation Team, and omniscient flashbacks shown to the player.
At an unspecified time before the game began, Adachi claims he heard about the Midnight Channel rumor at the police station and discovered his ability to stick his hand in the TV.[37] When Mayumi holed herself up at the Amagi Inn, Adachi went to ask if the rumors about her and Namatame were true. When Mayumi refused to answer, he took that to mean the rumors were true. He pushed her into the TV, and—while not surprised at his ability to the touch the TV, as he had found that out before—he was visibly surprised that her entire body went inside.[38] After the fog rolled around, Saki discovered Mayumi's corpse. Using his position as a detective, Adachi called Saki in for more questioning because he saw her out in public with Namatame. Adachi tried to force himself on Saki, mentioning that he saw her with Namatame in the afternoon, but she slapped him away. He asked her if he was not good enough before pushing her into the interrogation room TV.[39]
After Yukiko appeared on the Midnight Channel, a panicked Namatame called the police. During Namatame's confession on December 4th, he mentioned that he called the police, but no one took him seriously.[40] During Adachi's confession, the player sees the flashback of Namatame calling the police, starting from the midway point. Adachi happened to take the call and suggested that Namatame "protect" the people who appear on the TV. This phone call possibly planted the idea of "saving" the victims into Namatame's head. He started trying to "save" people by putting them into TVs, not realizing that Adachi was the real murderer and that the TV World was what killed Mayumi and Saki.
In the present, Naoto deduces that Mitsuo has no powers and that Adachi pushed him into the TV World. Though there is no flashback for this, Adachi claims he did indeed push Mitsuo into a TV after he turned himself in, then told the rest of the police force that he had sent Mitsuo home. Adachi explains that Namatame throwing someone in and the Investigation Team rescuing them was like a game of cat and mouse that he enjoyed watching unfold. Putting Mitsuo in was necessary so Namatame would not quit saving people, and the game could continue.[41]
However, the omniscient player will be aware that Adachi knows about dead bodies showing up on foggy days,[42] and will have seen Adachi appear as the figure in the foggy shopping district on April 29th (Yukiko's deadline),[43] June 4th (Kanji's deadline),[44] and October 5th (Naoto's deadline)[45] and get increasingly frustrated.[46][47][48] Because of his appearance dates on the dungeon deadlines and how the first threatening letter gets sent on October 20th after his last appearance in the shopping district, the player will be aware there is an inconsistency in what Adachi is saying. The Investigation Team will never learn about this.
Rise suddenly realizes that the Adachi they are speaking to is not the real Adachi. This Adachi—now revealed to be a fake projection—informs the Investigation Team that the fog is leaking and the TV World will replace the real world by the end of the year.[49] The projection then invites the Investigation Team to come as a group and see his real self in his dungeon, Magatsu Inaba, which he created to mislead them unlike the other dungeons which were born from repressed thought.[50] Kanji gets frustrated and rushes forward to attack Adachi, but the projection vanishes before the Investigation Team's eyes.
December 8 - 24, 2011
Starting on December 8th, the Investigation Team returns to Magatsu Inaba to settle things with Adachi. As they enter each floor of the dungeon, Adachi's voice taunts them. He mocks them for not having anything better to do and insults them for being high schoolers. He also criticizes their search for the truth and comments on how people will just believe whatever they are told.[51] In the 2nd area, Rise cannot find a way forward but notices a hole in the ground that the Investigation Team can jump into. This hole leads to the sub-area, Magatsu Mandala. Adachi continues taunting the group and forces them to play by his rules, such as kicking them out of the dungeon if they attack Shadows on a specific floor.
After fighting mini-bosses resembling police officers and a giant resembling the Tokyo Tower, the group clears Magatsu Mandala and finally reaches the real Adachi on the upper level of Magatsu Inaba. There, Adachi talks about how the world is going to change, and how they will not belong in the new world. He offers his viewpoints and tries to justify his actions.[52] Chie asks Adachi how he could be like this when he is a police officer, but Adachi tells her that he only became an officer so he could carry a gun.[d] The members of the Investigation Team have varying responses to him. Ultimately, none of them can see eye to eye with him, and they reject him. Adachi gains yellow eyes and a purple aura then attacks the party with his gun and Persona, Magatsu-Izanagi. After being defeated, Adachi says it does not matter if the real world disappears because he has nowhere to go back to.[54]
As he begins to laugh about it, his body is suddenly taken over by a being called Ameno-sagiri. Ameno-sagiri talks through Adachi and explains that it is leaking fog into the real world to grant humanity's desire to live in ignorance.[55] It came to this conclusion after seeing the people of Inaba accept whatever information was being told to them, not considering if it was the truth or not. The Investigation Team tells it that humanity does not want that. Ameno-sagiri talks about how humanity's brief desire for the truth torments Shadows and how it did not expect the Investigation Team to do this and then be able to wield their Shadows as Personas. They fight and defeat Ameno-sagiri with their Personas to prove humanity's potential. It disappears, returning both Adachi and the real world back to normal.
Adachi finally accepts that everything is over. Realizing he lost, he challenges the Investigation Team to change the future if they really think they can. In contrast to Adachi's attitude about things never changing, Yosuke tells him that anyone is capable of doing that. Adachi assumes the Investigation Team came to kill him and tells them to leave him to die in the TV World.[56] To his surprise, Kanji and Yosuke tell him they intend to take him back and answer for his crimes because that is how things work in the real world. Back in the Junes electronics department, Adachi is speechless when he learns that Dojima cared enough to send an ambulance for him and request he be taken into protective custody.
If the protagonist fails to meet the dungeon deadline of December 24th, then Adachi's threat proves credible. The protagonist will receive a phone call from Naoto, who gets attacked by a Shadow in reality, before Igor offers to rewind time by one week.
March 20, 2012
On March 20th, the protagonist receives a letter from Adachi. In his letter, Adachi promises to follow the rules of the real world from now on. But now that he has had time to think about it, something about the case has been bothering him. So long as he is in jail, he cannot investigate it himself, and he hopes that he can give the Investigation Team something to work with. Adachi recounts that he does not remember who first told him about the Midnight Channel, and he knows that he heard about it before the rumor came up at the police station. He thinks it is connected to him gaining power shortly after arriving in Inaba and vaguely recalls something similar in a file about Namatame.
The Investigation Team goes on to discover that Izanami was the person who kicked off the events of the past year by giving the protagonist, Adachi, and Namatame their power. When going through the corridors of Yomotsu Hirasaka, Izanami explains that she used the three to ascertain humanity's true desire, and, thanks to this experiment, she decided that humanity prefers lies over truth. She indirectly refers to Adachi as the one who gave himself up to something other than the truth, and in doing so, calamity—magatsu—twisted his awakened power, hence the name of Adachi's Persona.[e]
Persona 4 Golden
Adachi's role in Persona 4 Golden is the same as in Persona 4, but he now has a couple of new scenes during the story and a Social Link.
June 8 - 9, 2011
On June 8th, the protagonist comes home and finds Dojima and Adachi at the house. Dojima invited Adachi over for dinner as he was tired of listening to him slurp instant noodles. Adachi is still eating the eel bowl that Dojima bought for dinner, while both Dojima and Nanako already finished. Adachi thinks Nanako should have taken her time and savored her eel, as he is doing. Dojima remarks that Adachi is saying that because he is a slacker.
The protagonist asks Dojima about getting a scooter license. Dojima shows concern, but Adachi, being someone who is also from the city and used to more convenient public transportation, supports the protagonist and even tells him that Dojima used to ride around on one. After, Dojima and Adachi get called into the station due to a report about a suspicious man. On June 9th, Dojima and Adachi present Dojima's old scooter to the protagonist at the Moel gas station. Adachi brings it over after filling the gas, and Dojima thanks him for his help. Adachi mentions that it'd be nice if the police had scooters to chase down a suspicious photographer, alluding to the man Yukiko finds on the pole on June 23rd.
Golden Epilogue
Independent of the protagonist's interactions with Adachi, if Marie's Social Link is maxed out and the protagonist gets the true ending, then Izanami will clarify on March 20th that she hid Ameno-sagiri in Adachi.[60] Additionally, when the protagonist returns to Inaba in the Golden epilogue, Dojima mentions that he saw Adachi in jail. He has been a model prisoner and even claimed he was being treated better in jail than when he was Dojima's partner. Part of Dojima's visit is shown during Episode Adachi's epilogue in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
Social Link
Adachi is the Jester Social Link. As the protagonist discovers during their conversations, Adachi is not enjoying his life or work in Inaba. Not only is there less to do in Inaba, but even some of his police work has been menial, like finding a cat. The protagonist also learns about Adachi's past, and how, when he was in high school, his parents did not bother him as long as his grades were good,[61][f] so all he did was study. This does not bother him; he sees it as putting effort in to get something proportionate back.[63]
Adachi is impressed with the protagonist for being able to cook since he did not know how to cook during high school. And now that he is an adult, he never wants to prepare anything for dinner when he gets home as he cannot be bothered to do anything after work and ends up making cup noodles simply because it is easier.[64] He mentions he was "seeing a girl" before, but her personality turned out not to match her looks, hinting at his parasocial relationship with Mayumi Yamano and how he killed her after asking her about the affair.[65] He is currently single and wishes he had a cute girlfriend at home who cooked for him. The protagonist offers to cook for him instead, resulting in Adachi visiting the Dojima household several times and eating with the protagonist and Nanako.
During his visits to the Dojima household, Adachi messes around with Nanako for not being able to pronounce "stew", tries to teach her low-effort tactics like only reading the summary on the cover for book reports, and draws a hanamaru flower on her homework to signify that she completed it. He playfully offers the protagonist one as well, as hanamaru are normally only for children. Adachi also reveals he is good with his hands when he does coin tricks to cheer up Nanako. He wonders about how his life could have been different if he had been a magician instead, though he does not think he could have made a living like that.[66] In more serious moments, he says he will never get married which leads to Nanako pointing out that women would not want to marry a man with holes in his socks anyway.
When the protagonist finds Adachi during the daytime at Junes, he is usually trying to hide from an unnamed older woman. The woman keeps pestering Adachi due to him having the same given name as her son, and she brings him nimono with hard lotus root. Adachi uses the protagonist to hide behind when she appears and also uses his presence as an excuse to avoid her at night time. The older woman has even tried setting up Adachi with women by giving him matchmaking photos. Overall, he expresses that he finds her annoying, though the protagonist observes that he seems happy while saying this, and Adachi indirectly admits that she seems to care about him more than his own parents.[67]
On his rank 6 event, the woman and her real son show up at Junes together, and Adachi finds out that she keeps making him nimono with hard lotus root because that is what her real son likes. And furthermore, nimono with hard lotus root is what Adachi's own mother used to make for him.[68] Adachi remarks that he looks nothing like her real son, and she could have used anyone as a stand-in for her son; it did not have to be him. Despite the tone in his voice, Adachi thinks it is good that her son is back as it means she will not be bothering him. The protagonist thinks Adachi will be lonely without the older woman, but Adachi responds that he prefers being alone. Admittedly, he is lonely, but also thinks being alone is easier.
In November, after Dojima has been hospitalized, the protagonist visits Dojima in the hospital and finds Adachi there in his room. Adachi tells the protagonist to head home and get some rest; he will stay with Dojima. The protagonist assumes Adachi is concerned for him, and their bond strengthens. Throughout the month of November and into December, the protagonist is home alone. After Nanako revives on December 3rd Adachi tells the protagonist to enjoy the empty house while he still can since Dojima and Nanako will be back from the hospital soon. Once again assuming that Adachi is concerned for him, the bond between the two grows yet again. However, shortly after, Adachi is exposed as the culprit. Depending on the choice made by the protagonist on December 5th, Adachi's Social Link can change into Hunger or remain as Jester.
Hunger
On December 7th, a new scene plays after the portal to Magatsu Inaba appears. Rise senses Adachi calling out to the protagonist, and Naoto expresses concern over the protagonist confronting Adachi alone due to their relationship. When the protagonist goes against his friends' wishes and sees Adachi alone, Adachi sends another fake projection. Through it, Adachi expresses his annoyance at the protagonist for coming alone despite Adachi telling him to return with his friends.[69] The protagonist tries to reach out to Adachi, trying to get him to turn himself in, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Adachi mocks the protagonist for believing in some fictionalized version of himself, saying that their bond was all in the protagonist's head. Before he leaves, Adachi shoots at the window beside the protagonist and promises not to miss next time. Following this, Adachi's Social Link Arcana changes from Jester to Hunger.
After defeating Ameno-sagiri, Adachi tells the protagonist that they took very different paths despite having the same powers. If he had been more like the protagonist, things might have gone differently for him. During the true ending, Adachi's letter continues after he talks about the Midnight Channel. He has been thinking about Dojima, Nanako, and the protagonist lately. At first, he did not find his interactions with the three of them fun, but now he looks at them differently. At the end of his letter, Adachi calls the protagonist a dumbass for investing so much in him but encourages the protagonist to keep walking his own path, and he will stick to his. Adachi will also appear during the Social Link sequence in the final battle. After Izanami uses Thousand Curses, he makes fun of the protagonist for taking a little nap on the ground while he is being made to pay for his crimes.[g] He encourages the protagonist to stand up and again emphasizes how different they are.
Jester
Adachi's Social Link unlocks the new bad ending. On December 5th, the protagonist will reflect on their time with Adachi and be asked if they want to bring up his name. If the protagonist chooses to protect Adachi, the truth never comes to light, and time fast forwards to March 20th. The fog is still strong, and the fate of Inaba is unknown. But like with the other bad endings, Adachi never entered the TV, there was no threat to replace reality by the end of 2011,[49] and his Arcana remained as the Jester.
The protagonist visits Adachi one final time at the police station before leaving Inaba. The protagonist claims that he knows Adachi is the real murderer, but he is on Adachi's side. Adachi has the protagonist prove how serious he is by burning the second threatening letter sent to the Dojima house and destroying the only physical evidence that could have tied Adachi to the case. Adachi mockingly tells the protagonist that the truth is what people want it to be, and this is the truth the protagonist wants. After the usual sequence of the protagonist leaving on the train, there is a new animation of the protagonist spotting Adachi walking through the fog. This ending is called the Adachi Ending,[h] but is more commonly known by fans as the Accomplice Ending.[i]
Alternatively, if the protagonist gives Adachi an unfavorable response at any point and does not go through with burning the letter, then Adachi will say he was messing around, and the usual bad ending will play. Or, if the protagonist protects Adachi but does not visit him in March, then Adachi will call and let the protagonist know he has been suddenly transferred overseas.[j] Dojima suggests this is true, remarking that Adachi and the protagonist must have been quite close if he wanted to call him before leaving. After, the usual bad ending will play.
Persona 4 Arena
Adachi does not appear directly in the story, but Detective Kurosawa mentions him and Dojima when discussing the Inaba murder cases.[76]
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Arcade Mode
Adachi's own Arcade Mode has no story elements and only consists of him fighting against fakes in battle. He does appear in the Arcade Modes for other characters.
In Yu's Arcade Mode, Yu finds Adachi in a classroom and thinks he might be a fake. Adachi warns Yu not to fight so thoughtlessly, else it might lead to something that cannot be undone. Yu is surprised about Adachi being involved and loses sight of Adachi after he leaves for the roof. Upon reaching the roof and meeting Sho, Yu also asks him where Adachi has gone.
In Akihiko Sanada's Arcade Mode, Rise contacts Akihiko and mentions she detected someone near him. Akihiko catches up to this mystery person which turns out to be Adachi. Akihiko recognizes him as the culprit from the murder cases during the previous year, but he loses track of Adachi due to a fight with one of the fakes.
In Yukari Takeba's Arcade Mode, Yukari runs into Adachi in the halls of Yasogami High and calls him a suspicious-looking person. Adachi replies that she looks rather suspicious herself. Yukari recognizes him as the murderer from the serial murders, but she is ambushed by a fake while Adachi says he has no time for her and walks off.
Episode P4
Adachi is mentioned during chapter 1. When the Investigation Team gathers at Junes after the events of Persona 4 Arena, Yosuke brings up the possibility that Adachi might be the culprit again. Yu says that makes no sense because Adachi has a Persona and the culprit they are looking for is someone without one. In his inner thoughts, Yu also believed in what Adachi said at the end of Persona 4 about abiding by the rules.
Adachi first appears in person during chapter 5 when Yu, Yosuke, and Chie walk through hallways in the tower resembling Yasogami High School. At first, they think that this Adachi is one of the fake Shadows they have been fighting, but Yu observes his mannerisms and concludes that he must be the real Adachi. Adachi explains that he is helping Sho Minazuki, who aims to destroy the world. Yu tries to reason with Adachi, asking why he is helping Sho when he promised them he would abide by the rules. Adachi replies that it is because he is bored and does not care what happens to Inaba. He also mentions something about Persona fragments before walking off. Adachi appears again in chapter 9, which takes place in the tower room resembling the entrance of the Tartarus. The trio hides and overhears Sho's disagreement with Adachi. After, Sho reveals that he knows the trio is there, and they have to fight Sho and then his alternate personality, Minazuki. Adachi mentions something about what Minazuki is doing before leaving again.
Upon reaching the top of the tower in chapter 12, Yu finds the large crystallized structure made of Persona fragments with Sho and Adachi beside it. He eavesdrops on their conversation and learns that Adachi was pretending to help Sho while plotting to disrupt Sho's plans and that everything Adachi said before was an act he put on for the Investigation Team. Sho gets angry at Adachi over the betrayal and grabs him by the collar when Yu reveals himself and steps in to save Adachi. Adachi tells Yu he did not do this because of him or his friends before passing out. When Adachi comes to, Hi-no-Kagutsuchi has been summoned, and he berates Yu for having not finished things yet. The two combine their strength, summon Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi, and then defeat Hi-no-Kagutsuchi together with a sword-like attack.
In the chapter 13, Adachi vanishes from the top of the tower without any explanation after defeating Hi-no-Kagutsuchi. When Yu meets back up with his friends and the Shadow Operatives, Yosuke asks what happened to Adachi. Having heard what Adachi was doing all along during the P-1 Climax, Yu assures his friends that Adachi will make good on his promise to play by the rules from now on.
In the true ending, there is no mention of Adachi vanishing from the tower, and Margaret teleports everyone away. What happens to him after is unknown.
Episode P3
Adachi first appears during chapter 9, told from the perspective of Mitsuru Kirijo. As she and other members of the Shadow Operatives face a wave of Shadows at Junes, Adachi shows up and helps them by clearing out the Shadows and hints about what Sho is up to before leaving. He appears again in chapter 10 when Labrys reaches the top of the tower. Similar to Episode P4, Labrys finds the large crystallized structure made of Persona fragments with Sho and Adachi beside it. After Labrys defeats Hi-no-Kagutsuchi, Elizabeth appears and teleports Labrys and everyone else away. Labrys is unsure if Elizabeth will help Adachi too, but she gets teleported before she can say anything. At the beginning of chapter 11, Labrys sees that Sho made it to safety and figures Adachi must also be okay.[77]

Adachi's story coincides with the events of Episode P4 and the unlocked true ending, told from his perspective.
Chapter 1 of Episode Adachi starts with Adachi being detained in a holding cell at the prefectural police station in a city near Inaba. He is fantasizing about eating something besides the chikuzenni with lotus root in front of him. Adachi has been there for five months and has already told the investigators what happened, but the claims he made about the TV were met with psychiatric evaluations.[78][79] Due to the nature of the Inaba serial murders, it has been hard to build a case against him, and Adachi remarks that he personally would not want to have to work on a case like this.
An older detective and his younger partner call him into the interrogation room. The detective presents new evidence to look over: A model gun that Adachi rigged to fire real bullets, a portable music player he won at a New Year's bingo game, and a large flat screen TV. Adachi says that none of this has anything to do with the murder case, but these detectives are too incompetent to put together a case against him, so he pretends to look over the evidence. The older detective brings up Dojima, saying his position with the Inaba PD is unknown due to his connection to Adachi. He even offered to get rid of Adachi for Dojima, but Dojima replied that Adachi can take responsibility for himself. Internally, Adachi believes Dojima should just cut ties with him.
The detective goes too far, assuming that Dojima has also committed murder and that Adachi was just following his example. Adachi gets irritated at this accusation and brings up the older detective's own reputation for hitting suspects and how it has been covered up before. The detective grabs Adachi and tells him to confess. His younger partner tries to stop him, but the detective punches Adachi anyway. Adachi begins reciting procedural code about suspects confessing under duress.[80] The detective gets ready to hit Adachi again, and Adachi braces for it, but instead, he hears a gun click. The detective has red eyes and is mind controlled by an unknown outsider who uses the gun to force Adachi into the large TV.
In chapter 2, once inside the TV World, Adachi comes across a classroom and hallway resembling Yasogami High. He wanders through a door in the hallway and ends up on the roof of the tower where he meets Minazuki, who was mind controlling the detective earlier. Minazuki gives Adachi a gun and tests his combat ability. After finding him suitable, Minazuki says he is going to destroy the world, and he expects Adachi to help. Minazuki continues that there is no value in this world full of liars who talk about friendship and bonds while leaving others behind. In his thoughts, Adachi admits there was a time when he agreed with what Minazuki was saying, but not anymore. Regardless, Adachi is not given any choice but to follow Minazuki's plan. Minazuki recalls that Adachi once received an inhuman power, but Adachi only remembers this as a time when he blacked out and was controlled by something else.[81]
Minazuki has broken Adachi out of jail because he wants to use the power that remains inside Adachi to control an entity that he plans on summoning. Adachi recognizes that Minazuki currently wields this entity's power, and it is represented through Minazuki's eyes turning red. Knowing that he cannot refuse, Adachi asks what all he has in mind. Minazuki explains that he is creating a vessel out of Shadows for the entity to inhabit, and he plans to collect Persona fragments to control this entity.[82] For this, he expects Adachi to help collect Persona fragments by fighting in the P-1 Climax, and Minazuki wants to use the power in Adachi to control it. Adachi finds this all extremely stupid, but he knows he cannot just sit back and do nothing after hearing what is going on. Minazuki adds that the Persona users in Inaba who defeated him before are also part of this tournament, and encourages Adachi to get his revenge. Suddenly, Sho takes control of his body from Minazuki, greets Adachi, and then sends him off to fight in the P-1 Climax.
Adachi walks through the hallways in chapter 3 and runs into Yu, Yosuke, and Chie. The scene plays out the same as in Episode P4, but this time, the narrative shows Adachi's inner thoughts as he misleads them. To them, Adachi is an escaped criminal, and assuming he is allied with the culprit fits their preconceptions about him. He does not care much what they think of him as long as they can stop Sho and Minazuki's plan to destroy the world.[83] He indirectly assists them by giving them hints about the Persona fragments before leaving while the trio has to fight a Shadow fake.
At the start of chapter 4, Adachi finds Sho in a room that resembles the entrance to the Tartarus. Sho is restless and bored as his plan to gather Persona Fragments is going too well. This conversation leads to another scene from Episode P4. Adachi has his usual unserious attitude and tells Sho they do not need to rush things. This causes him to get into an argument with Sho, who then threatens to kill him. Adachi dares Sho to do it, asking if he has ever killed someone before. As Adachi looks around the room, he spots Yu, Yosuke, and Chie trying to hide. Sho also notices them, and they end up fighting. Adachi knows that Yu and his friends do not know about Sho's other personality who can use a Persona. Like before, he tries to indirectly warn them about what is coming. After Yu fights Minazuki, Adachi is almost about to get involved to help Yu, but Naoto and Labrys show up. The ground starts shaking, and Minazuki uses his special red eyes power to prevent the Investigation Team and Labrys from moving. He departs after announcing he has the necessary Persona fragments and leaves behind a fake Mitsuru to fight them. Adachi tries to give the Investigation Team more hints about what is happening again, but he leaves after the fake Mitsuru attacks him.
By chapter 5, Adachi makes it to the top of the tower where Sho is standing next to the large mass of Persona fragments. Adachi aims and shoots at it, which causes Sho to get angry and fight Adachi over his betrayal. Adachi wins and has his pistol against Sho's head, but Sho's eyes turn red, and he uses his special power to prevent Adachi from moving. Adachi loses control of his body as Sho gets on top and punches him. Sho describes how he planned to take Adachi's Persona, turn it into a Shadow, and add it to the other mass of Shadows that has been collected to be used as a vessel. Additionally, the power remaining inside Adachi can interfere with the entity that Sho wants to absorb. Thus, Sho saw the residual power in Adachi as a way to control the being he was summoning since it would not be at full strength.[84] After using Adachi, Sho planned on killing him, but he was content to turn his eye and let Adachi have fun beforehand.
This scene leads to the conversation that Yu eavesdrops in Episode P4. Sho compares the two, saying he will succeed, whereas Adachi failed in destroying the world. Adachi tells Sho they are not the same. He repeats what Yukiko said to him in December[85] and likens Sho to a kid throwing a tantrum.[86] Sho grabs Adachi by the collar and says he will kill him. Adachi warns him that the Investigation Team is persistent if nothing else. With Sho's katana against his throat, Adachi thinks about how his corpse will turn up somewhere on a telephone pole after this, and then the murder investigation will be back to square one. He does not want that to be erased as that experience has come to define who he is.[87] Adachi sees Sho raise his katana, but Yu reveals himself and steps in at the last second to save Adachi. Adachi tells Yu he did not do this because of him or his friends, and Yu replies that he knows Adachi is not that kind of person. Yu already knowing this annoys Adachi, who tells Yu that's not very cute of him before passing out.
When Adachi comes to in chapter 6, Hi-no-Kagutsuchi has been summoned, and he berates Yu for having not finished things yet. Adachi takes on Hi-no-Kagutsuchi by himself to give Yu a second to recover. After, the two combine their strength, summon Izanagi and Magatsu-Izanagi, and defeat Hi-no-Kagutsuchi together with a sword-like attack. Adachi passes out after the battle and wakes up on the floor of the TV World's studio area with Yu and Sho in chapter 7. He encourages Sho to start over as he is still young, and it is not too late for him yet, then gets ready to return to the real world through a TV. He tells Yu that he is going back for real, not running away like in a movie. He just wants to do his time and not get involved in things like the P-1 Climax. Yu catches him off guard when he calls out to Adachi to wish him good luck and tells him that Dojima plans to visit him. Adachi calls him a dumbass like in his Social Link letter, then returns to prison.
The epilogue of Episode Adachi takes place during summer before the Golden Epilogue of Persona 4 Golden. The prosecution has brought forth formal charges against Adachi,[k] he has been moved to a detention center, and he has the possibility of getting capital punishment.[l] But for now, he is glad he is not involved in anything like the P-1 Climax again. He reflects on the long road behind him and how quickly he traveled it: He hated his life, discovered he had a special power, used it to fill a void in his heart, but lost to the Investigation Team and agreed to face his punishment because that is how things work in the real world. He tries to sleep, but just as Yu said, Dojima shows up to visit him. As they talk, Adachi finally accepts the bond that he once tried to throw away.[93]
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
The game's main story occurs after the epilogue of Persona 4 Golden when Adachi is in detention and awaiting trial, as seen in his epilogue for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Adachi does not appear in the main story and is only a DLC character. Atlus explained that his appearance in the game, his dancing stage being Yomotsu Hirasaka, and Yu being his Fever Time partner fit into the canon of Persona 4 regardless because it takes place in Adachi's dreams.[94]
Anime Appearances
Persona 4 The Animation
In the Persona 4 anime adaptation, Adachi appears as a supporting character and overall fulfills the same role as he does in the video game. Both his Japanese and English voice actors from Persona 4 reprise their roles as him.
In episode 1, Adachi is introduced the same way as he is in the game, finding Mayumi's body alongside Dojima and running away to throw up. Though this time, Yu Narukami and his friends are no longer present during this scene. In episode 3, Yu and Yosuke get arrested after they are caught with weapons at Junes. Adachi walks them out of the station, mentioning they only got off easy because Yu is Dojima's nephew. Chie arrives at the police station and is concerned because Yukiko has gone missing. Adachi tells the three that there is a theory about Yukiko being involved in Mayumi's murder and casually refers to Yukiko by her given name instead of her family name. Chie tries to attack him after hearing these accusations, and Yosuke has to hold her back. Dojima overhears the commotion and tells Adachi to shut up. After Yukiko is rescued from the TV World in episode 5, Adachi joins the Dojimas for dinner. When Nanako brings up going somewhere for Golden Week, Adachi volunteers Yu to make lunches for the family outing.
In episode 7, the Investigation Team visits Tatsumi Textiles to ask Kanji's mom for clues to find him in the TV World. Adachi appears in the shopping district eating a croquette and holding a grocery bag with a cabbage in it and happens to see the four of them outside the textiles shop. He later reports this to Dojima, causing Dojima to grill Yu in the post-credits scene. In episode 9, Rise arrives in Inaba. Adachi is no longer on traffic control. Instead, Yu, Yosuke, and Kanji's visit is combined into one scene with Dojima and Adachi's visit. Dojima becomes suspicious of Yu and his friends since they too showed up to warn Rise. In the second half of the episode, Dojima sends Adachi to follow them around, and Adachi invites himself to the group rather than being invited by Chie. Yosuke and Chie spot the photographer following Rise, and Adachi takes him to the police station.
In episode 13, Adachi is at the Dojima household for dinner. Dojima asks Yu what he has been up to lately. Nanako does not hear the response and returns to the dinner table to her dad and Adachi laughing at Yu. Adachi talks about the police catching Mitsuo but does not suggest that a real killer might still be out there as he does in the game. During the summer festival at Tatsuhime Shrine, Dojima almost does not make it. He calls Nanako to tell her that he is stuck late at work because Adachi messed up on something. Adachi is punished for this unknown mistake by being forced to kneel on the ground while he strokes a cabbage. In episode 14, it is revealed that during the previous episode, Yu told Dojima and Adachi that he has been helping a fox, which amuses both Dojima and Adachi, who assume he is lying.
In episode 17, Adachi is drunk at the Dojima household after Yu and his friends rescue Naoto. While the scene is the same as the game, he is also shown eating slices of cabbage with his beer. In the episode's post-credits sequence, a mystery person is shown typing a letter that says, "Quit saving people".
In episode 18, Nanako asks her father to read her Jack and the Beanstalk, but Adachi calls him about work. It turns out there was a hit-and-run near the Samegawa. As he and Dojima drive to the scene of the incident, Adachi brings up how Dojima's wife died the same way. A few days after, Nanako is sick, and Dojima receives a phone call from Adachi and almost hangs up on him. Adachi tells him that a letter arrived from a man named Ichihara, but he does not remember how long ago it came. Dojima rushes to the office, thinking it might be related to his wife's hit and run. The next day, Dojima scolds Adachi for not having an answer to one of his questions while Adachi organizes flyers asking citizens for any information about the recent hit-and-run. Yu shows up at the police station to bring Dojima a change of clothes, and Adachi complains about Dojima to him. Adachi explains that Dojima is not convinced that Mitsuo is actually the murderer and has been looking into the murder cases again, in addition to investigating the recent hit-and-run incident.
In episodes 21-23, Adachi has the same involvement as he does with November 5th, Nanako's hospital stay, and December 3rd in the game. After Nanako flatlines, he grips Dojima's crutch and says he also wishes he could kill Namatame. In episode 24, Yu and Yosuke return to the hospital to confront Adachi. The rest of the Investigation Team rejoins them. Naoto figures out it is Adachi after he mentions that Namatame put everyone in. However, back during episode 21, Naoto never read "put her in" from Namatame's diary, and it is never discussed why Naoto can connect the two phrases.
After, the Investigation Team enters the TV World and finds Adachi in Mayumi's dungeon. Rather than having to leave and then come back another day, the Investigation Team follows Adachi into Magatsu Inaba immediately. The dungeon serves as a recreation of locations around Inaba. Adachi summons Reapers to attack the Investigation Team while giving his side of the story by showing them his memories through these recreations. While talking about Mayumi, Adachi mentions that he started watching her on TV and supporting her as he had nothing better to do while he was stuck in Inaba. With Saki, Adachi tried to blackmail her into doing whatever he asked, and in exchange, he would not tell anyone that he saw her with Namatame.
In episode 25, Adachi lectures the Investigation Team about adulthood and the futility of the world. Yu rejects what Adachi stands for and fights Adachi by himself. Izanagi defeats Magatsu-Izanagi, and after being beaten by Yu, Adachi puts his gun to his head and intends to shoot himself. Yu rushes to stop him when Ameno-sagiri suddenly takes over Adachi's body. After defeating Ameno-sagiri, Yosuke tells Adachi that he will live and face his punishment, and Yu offers Adachi his hand and says that it is time to go home. In the Factor of Hope and the BD/DVD-only bonus True End Episode that adapts March 20th from the game, Adachi's letter arrives, and he narrates its contents over a scene showing him and Namatame in jail. He is also shown in a flashback where he drives into Inaba wearing casual clothes and shakes hands with the gas station attendant.
Adachi does not appear on any of the limited edition BD/DVD covers that use character art, but Magatsu-Izanagi appears on the standard edition DVD cover for volume 9. While Mitsuaki Madono voices Adachi and Ameno-sagiri in the game, the anime has a different voice actor, Ryusei Nakao, voicing Ameno-sagiri in episode 25 as well as in The Factor of Hope.
Persona 4 The Animation: The Factor of Hope
The Factor of Hope is a theatrical version of Persona 4 The Animation that focuses on the last few episodes and includes the unaired True Ending that was later included on BD/DVD vol. 10. The film opens in media res with Yu having defeated Ameno-sagiri, and the Investigation Team having a party to celebrate the case being over and Nanako's discharge from the hospital. The Investigation Team recaps the events leading up to that point. Similar to episode 24, Adachi is used as a narrative tool to recap the plot until December, with him recalling events using the sets in Magatsu Inaba. After the fight against Adachi, time skips to Yu's departure from Inaba in March. He reads Adachi's letter, leading to him and his friends finding Izanami.
Persona 4 The Golden Animation
While Persona 4 The Animation was a complete adaptation of the game's narrative, Persona 4 The Golden Animation skips around on the timeline and adapts the new material from Persona 4 Golden with a special focus on Marie. Episodes 6 and 7 adapt Adachi's Social Link. In the Japanese cast and staff commentary for episode 7, the anime creative staff says this is just their interpretation of Adachi, encourages fans to come up with their own take, and emphasizes that only the original creators (Atlus) have all the answers.[95]
In episode 1, during the opening, Adachi gets yelled at by Ai Ebihara after accusing her of shoplifting.[96] In episode 2, when Dojima gives Yu his old scooter, Adachi rides it to the Moel gas station to hand it off. In episode 5, Dojima drags a resistant Adachi along to Rise's concert at Junes. After the concert, Marie sees Adachi and detects something odd about him.
Episode 6 recounts Adachi's transfer back in April. He sees Mayumi Yamano on a program as he drives into town, shakes hands with the gas station attendant, meets Dojima, and tries to adjust to life in Inaba. Dojima is embarrassed by how Adachi is unable to pronounce the readings of the store names in the Central Shopping District. Later, Adachi goes out on his own to the shopping district and makes an effort to familiarize himself with the area and eats a beef skewer at Souzai Daigaku. But he quickly feels dejected after he calls Dojima, who asks him not to call unless it is an emergency as he will be busy helping his nephew move in.
While drinking alone at night, Adachi sees Mayumi on the Midnight Channel and discovers he can put his hand into the TV. Unlike the game, where it was ambiguous, or the previous anime, where Adachi just says he was a Mayumi supporter, Adachi happens to get assigned by the police department to guard Mayumi while she stays at the Amagi Inn. She refuses to answer him about the affair, so he throws her into the TV. After Yu arrives in Inaba, Adachi stands outside the Dojima house in the rain and peers into their home without knocking. The night after, Adachi gets rejected by Saki and murders her. He misses a call from Dojima inviting him to dinner, but now he can only laugh about it.
Later in spring, Yu, Adachi, and Nanako run into an older woman whose son is also named Tohru. Adachi has had run-ins with her before, and she keeps making him a pot of nimono. In July, Yu and Adachi see the older woman with her real son at Junes. Adachi remarks that it did not have to be him. Following this, Yu begins bringing food to Adachi's apartment, inviting him to come over for dinner, and sending him home with leftovers. When Adachi asks Yu why he's doing this, Yu replies that he wants to and does not need a reason to help others. When Adachi opens his fridge in October, it is full of food from Yu that he never ate, and he begins throwing it away.
Marie advises Yu to stay away from Adachi, but cannot explain why. Adachi laughs at Yu after he explains that Marie is his friend who he is trying to help. Yu asks if something is wrong with wanting to help others who are in trouble. Adachi tells him that no one knows if they are doing the right thing or not by "helping" until it produces results; what good one does might be harmful to another. After Dojima's car accident and Nanako's hospitalization in November, Adachi feels guilty due to him indirectly influencing Namatame, but he tries to pin the blame on Yu and his friends, saying this is the result of them trying to help by playing hero.
In episode 7, Yu, knowing that Adachi is the culprit, runs to the hospital after hearing from his uncle that Adachi is checking on Nanako. Adachi wordlessly tells Nanako goodbye by adjusting her blanket, then goes into the TV World. Yu also enters the TV World and confronts Adachi in Mayumi's dungeon by himself. The two of them summon their Personas and attack one another. There is a flash of white light when the two cross blades, and Yu sees inside Adachi's head: Memories of his days in school, only studying and never making any friends; Adachi becomes an officer, but his coworker gets promoted to the prestigious 1st Homicide Division while he is given a transfer order to Inaba; Dojima takes him around town and gives him a red mug to use when he is at the Dojima house, then says not to call unless it is urgent while he is helping his nephew move into town; Yu's arrival in Inaba and Adachi feels more distant from people even though Yu himself is trying to reach out to him. After, Adachi tells Yu to leave.
Yu returns with the Investigation Team and takes Adachi on alone while his friends fight the Shadows. After fighting with their Personas and not making any headway, Yu and Adachi's fight turns into a fistfight inside the replica of the Dojima household's living room in Magatsu Inaba. Yu overpowers Adachi and punches him to finish it. Adachi says the difference is that Yu has bonds, but he himself does not. Yu picks up the replica of Adachi's red mug and sets it next to the other three colored mugs to remind Adachi that he did have bonds, saying that it is time to go home. However, Ameno-sagiri takes over Adachi's body, and Yu takes it on by himself. During the fight, Adachi lends Yu his Magatsu-Izanagi tarot card, which he uses to finish things. When Ameno-sagiri is defeated, it vanishes, and Yu catches Adachi.
Adachi takes over the appearance of the episode title cards for his episodes; the TV has a red background behind it instead of the anime's usual yellow. Adachi appears alongside Yu on the cover of BD/DVD volume 4, the 2nd half eyecatch for episode 7 with Yu and Nanako, and is also included in both of the anime's audio dramas that come with the BD/DVDs. In the BD/DVD version of episode 12, there is an added scene in the beginning where Adachi is shown eating by himself in jail while Yu reads the letter from Adachi where he talks about looking back on his time spent with Yu, Dojima, and Nanako.
Another End Episode: Thank You Mr. Accomplice
BD/DVD volume 4 of Persona 4 Golden The Animation includes a bonus OVA called "Another End Episode: Thank You Mr. Accomplice" as an alternate second half to episode 7.[97] After their encounter in Mayumi's dungeon during the first half of episode 7, Yu returns by himself and meets with Adachi again, saying he wants to save him. At first, Adachi threatens him with his gun but then instead leads Yu to the police station and tells him to burn the second letter sent to the Dojima house.
This leads to the anime's version of the Adachi Ending with Yu burning the letter. Adachi is shocked at first, then starts laughing and asks Yu if he understands what he just did. Frustrated, Yu shoves Adachi up against the wall and asks what he means. Adachi explains that he just destroyed evidence, which makes him a criminal. Adachi threatens him not to run away. Yu says he will not run, and the anime shows him, his friends, and Adachi carrying on like usual while Inaba is full of fog. Adachi asks Yu to get sushi for dinner at Dojima's, and the two of them act as though nothing has happened. When Yu leaves Inaba, he spots Adachi walking through the fog from the window of his train. The focus then switches back to Adachi, who sighs and says he is bored.
A special key art was created for Thank You Mr. Accomplice which features Adachi and Magatsu-Izanagi in Magatsu Inaba. Additionally, Shoji Meguro composed a piano version of Adachi's dungeon music which plays during the credits.
Manga Appearances
Persona 4
The manga adaptation began serialization in 2009 and took until 2019 to finish. As a result, in the early volumes, Adachi appears as a supporting character and largely fulfills the same role as in the original Persona 4 video game, but his appearances in the later volumes incorporate elements from his Social Link in Persona 4 Golden in addition to the Persona 4 The Golden Animation staff's interpretation of Adachi from episodes 6 and 7.
Adachi appears in chapters 12, 20-21, 25, 50-51, 53, 55-56, and 58 and helps move the plot in the same way as in the game. For the rest of his appearances, he fulfills the same role, but some details have been changed. In chapter 2, Adachi is introduced alongside Dojima, finding Mayumi's corpse, though he does not throw up. In chapter 7, instead of being caught at Junes with weapons and then running into Adachi on their way out, Soji Seta, Yosuke, and Chie go to the police station to ask Adachi about Yukiko's disappearance. In chapter 18, the manga depicts Kanji stealing a piece of paper from Adachi while he was being questioned. The paper has notes about Misuzu's new enka album, Mayumi's low ratings, and also the dates when Mayumi and Saki appeared on the news.[m]
In chapter 27, Dojima and Adachi walk through the shopping district and talk about their warrant for the suspect and how the case might be over soon. This happens within earshot of Naoki Konishi. In chapter 31, he appears alongside Dojima at the police station during the summer montage. In chapter 38, the Investigation Team is trying to locate Naoto within the TV World, and they ask about Naoto around town. Instead of a nameless police officer in the shopping district, they come across Adachi at Junes and ask him about Naoto. Adachi mentions that Naoto's interview has caused the media to start bothering the police about whether the case is really over or not, and that Naoto should have left it to the grown-ups to take care of the rest. In chapter 45, Dojima and Adachi attend the concert at Junes. Before they leave, Adachi spots Namatame in the crowd.
Chapter 54 adapts Adachi's Social Link. At the start of the chapter, an older woman is talking to Adachi at Junes on an unidentified day. Later, on November 13th, Soji sees Adachi in Junes, and the two go grocery shopping together. Soji invites Adachi over for dinner after hearing that he cannot cook, but Adachi avoids responding to his invitation. Suddenly, he hears the older woman saying Tohru and assumes she is talking to him. But when he turns around, she is with her real son, also named Tohru. Adachi remarks that she could have used anyone as a substitute for her son; it did not have to be him. After the woman and her son leave, Adachi asks Soji what they are having for dinner.
At the Dojima house, Adachi complains about adult life as the two eat. Soji asks Adachi to stop by again sometime, but Adachi turns him down. Adachi compares Soji to the older woman, saying that Soji could invite any of his friends over if he gets lonely. It does not have to be Adachi. This interaction affects Soji, who has an ongoing subplot about his loneliness and distant relationship with his parents. Shortly after, in chapter 59, Adachi is exposed as the culprit, and he enters the TV. Teddie sniffs out Adachi's location, and the Investigation Team says they will return for him. Instead of confronting him as a group, Soji returns by himself and tries to talk to Adachi, asking him to reconsider.
In chapters 60-62, the Investigation Team enters the TV World and finds Adachi. After Kanji tries to rush him, Adachi's fake projection disappears, and the whole group instantly enters Magatsu Inaba. The Investigation Team fights Adachi while he tells them what happened with Mayumi, Saki, Namatame, and Mitsuo. Kanji and Yosuke stay behind to fight The Reaper and Adachi defeats the girls, leaving only Soji and Teddie standing. Soji tells Teddie to help the others, and he confronts Adachi alone.
Soji argues that Adachi, being a lonely person himself, should have understood Soji, Dojima, and Nanako's struggles with loneliness. But instead of recognizing that and getting closer, Adachi put physical and emotional distance between himself and the other three, then felt left out. Adachi lashes out, saying that he's special and the world is wrong. He attacks Soji, but Soji's friends get back up to help him, and together they defeat Adachi. Soji can empathize with Adachi and realizes that Adachi accepting his dinner invite was his way of trying to reach out. He only wishes he had come to Inaba earlier and gotten to know Adachi better.
After, Ameno-sagiri takes over Adachi's body. During the battle versus Ameno-sagiri, Adachi reflects on how a higher being was using him, and it turns out he is not very special at all. But instead of letting this get to him, Adachi helps Soji by giving him Magatsu-Izanagi. Adachi falls from the sky after Ameno-sagiri disappears, and Soji rushes to catch him. Adachi tells him and his friends that so long as they have the power to change the future, they can live however they want. He expects them to leave him to die, but Yosuke tells him that he is going to live and be brought to justice.
In chapter 64, when Soji reads Adachi's letter in March, there is a flashback of Adachi writing the letter in jail as he talks about his interactions with Dojima, Nanako, and Soji. In chapter 66, during the final battle with Izanami, Soji and his friends get swallowed by Izanami's Thousand Curses. Soji becomes lost; he can feel his friends nearby but does not see them. Adachi is the only Social Link character who appears to Soji at first. He encourages Soji to stand up and make the future he and the rest of the Investigation Team are after. Soji lifts his head and sees the rest of his friends from Inaba standing with Adachi. With their help, Soji goes on to defeat Izanami.
Adachi has a color page in volume 4, depicting him comparing cabbages in Junes. He makes an appearance on the cover of volume 12 alongside Soji, and his art from the cover is re-used on a color page.
Persona 4: Yasoinaba Case File
The Persona 4: Yasoinaba Case File manga consists of multiple side stories originally serialized in Persona Magazine. Adachi briefly appears alongside Dojima in the Prologue, File #01, and File #02.
In File #03, he drops Dojima's coat off at the house while Nanako is home alone. Nanako goes out to search for her dad to give him his coat back but gets lost. Dojima later berates Adachi for not just leaving his coat at the station since he inadvertently caused Nanako to go out by herself. In File #06, Adachi appears at the Dojima house hoping for a free dinner, unaware that Yu has been sick that day. Seeing Adachi and most of the Investigation Team gathered, Yu declares he will take care of everyone's problems, which leads to Chie knocking him out.
Adachi is the primary subject of File #04. He has a day off during summer, but his air conditioner broke down and the repair company is not able to get to it. He goes to a family restaurant to use their air conditioning. Before he can pay, he discovers that his wallet is missing. He then goes to loiter in the air conditioned Junes where he gets guilt-tripped into helping a lost child find his mother. The mother thanks Adachi for his help by buying him takoyaki, but he drops the container when he runs into a burglar that Dojima is trying to catch. Dojima asks Adachi to stay and help, but Adachi runs away, knowing Dojima will be upset. Still hungry, he runs into Yu, who gives him a nikuman. Adachi goes to the police station, assuming his wallet is there. He rummages through his desk, looking for his wallet, and almost drops the nikuman on the ground. Dojima appears and gives him paperwork as punishment for running away earlier, which causes Adachi to finally drop the nikuman. While Adachi goes through a sizeable amount of paperwork at his desk, Dojima mentions that he found his wallet and put it in his mailbox earlier.
Adachi appears on the color illustration page alongside Dojima, Nanako, and Yu. The illustration depicts the four of them eating dinner together with Adachi going for a piece of sea urchin sushi.
Persona 4 Arena
Similar to the game, Adachi is briefly referred to in chapter 2 when Dojima says the reports about "Personas" and "entering the TV" were all filed by his younger partner.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
The manga adaptation generally follows the plot of Episode P4 from Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and includes scenes from Episode Adachi plus the game's true ending.
Adachi first appears in chapter 1 being interrogated in jail. Minazuki mind controls the interrogating detective and uses his gun to force Adachi to climb into a TV. Once inside, in chapter 3, Minazuki invites him to witness the end of the world. General Teddie appears on a TV and tells Minazuki to hurry up and kill Adachi, but Minazuki tells him that Sho wants to let Adachi watch, and Minazuki gives Sho what he wants. General Teddie relents but reminds Minazuki to collect the Persona Fragments, a phrase that catches Adachi's attention. Minazuki orders Adachi to fight in the P-1 Climax, then turns on a TV to show him what it is.
In chapter 5, Adachi watches Yu and Yosuke fight fakes of Rise and Naoto on the TV. He tries to get information out of Minazuki by asking about how Yu and his friends factor into the end of the world. Sho takes over his body from Minazuki and mocks Yu and Yosuke for their friendship and teamwork. He tosses Adachi a remote on his way out. When Adachi uses it, the TV broadcasts a quiz show, which he participates in with small Shadows. In chapter 15, Adachi says that the quiz show helped him understand what Sho and Minazuki are doing to bring about the end of the world. Earlier in chapters 10-11, he used this knowledge to give Yu, Yosuke, and Chie hints about the Persona fragments and the source of Sho and Minazuki's powers that activate when their eyes turn red. In chapter 19, Adachi distracts Minazuki from attacking Yu and the others. He follows after Minazuki through the Tartarus door.
In chapters 25-26, on top of the tower, Adachi tries to pry information out of Minazuki once more, asking what he plans to do with the Persona Fragments. Minazuki says there is one last thing he needs, then suddenly attacks Adachi with Tsukiyomi. Minazuki reveals that the reason why he recruited Adachi is because he needs Adachi's Persona, Magatsu-Izanagi, to control the being behind General Teddie. The General is aware of how a part of Izanami once possessed Adachi through Ameno-sagiri, which makes Adachi's Persona a threat. Seeing no other choice, Adachi agrees to summon Magatsu-Izanagi for Minazuki. But instead of summoning it, he reminds himself that he said he'd follow the rules and shoots the Persona fragments structure instead. Sho takes over his body and attacks Adachi over this betrayal. In chapter 27, Yu arrives on top of the tower while Sho is beating up Adachi.
The beginning of chapter 28 continues where chapter 27 left off: Yu trips Sho, and helps the injured Adachi. Sho mocks them, saying he is tired of this soap opera they are putting on—there is no way they genuinely care about one another. Adachi loses consciousness but wakes up in time to protect Yu from Hi-no-Kagutsuchi in chapter 33. He remarks that Minazuki was correct about his Persona being one of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi's weaknesses. Together, Yu and Adachi finish it off.
After Sho is free from Hi-no-Kagutsuchi in chapter 34, he tells Yu and Adachi that he knows nothing besides combat. Yu offers to fight him as a way of bonding with one another. Adachi remarks that there must be no cure for stupidity but throws Sho his other katana and sits on the sidelines to watch. While watching their duel in chapter 35, Adachi comments on how the two of them are expending all of their strength to fight one another over absolutely nothing. In the epilogue that takes place after the P-1 Climax, Adachi is in disbelief when he gets a visit from Dojima after being moved to a detention facility.
Adachi appears on the standard back cover for volume 2. For the Barnes and Noble exclusive English variant cover of the manga, he no longer appears on the back cover but is on the fold-out mini poster of the standard cover.[99]

Audio Drama Appearances
Persona 4 Drama CD Vol. 3
The main plot of the 3rd Persona 4 audio drama revolves around the sports day at Yasogami High that takes place in the fall between Naoto and Nanako's dungeons during the game's timeline. Nanako wants to go to sports day with her dad, but Dojima is working that day. During track 1, Dojima and Adachi arrive at the Dojima house while the Investigation Team is studying. During track 2, despite bragging about being an elite, Adachi does not know their school material, nor is he aware that Pluto is no longer considered a planet. Dojima reveals that for an "elite", Adachi lacks in multiple other areas, including navigating his way around Inaba.
In track 8, though Dojima claimed Adachi is incapable of navigating his way around, Adachi successfully drives Dojima to Yasogami High in a patrol car just in time for the three-legged-race so Dojima can enter it with Nanako. Adachi assumes it must be pointless to even try to win the race until Yukiko lets him know that the winner gets a gift certificate to stay at the Amagi Inn. Dojima tries to lecture him that not everything is about winning or prizes, then heads off to run in the race with Nanako. Adachi talks to the protagonist, who thanks Adachi for his help. In track 10, Adachi sees the protagonist in the relay race and remarks how much unnecessary effort he is putting into it. Dojima confidently tells Adachi that the protagonist is going to win, but Adachi bids goodbye to Dojima and leaves without seeing how the relay turns out.
Persona 4 The Animation Drama CD #2
The 2nd audio drama for Persona 4 The Animation takes place at the end of August between episodes 13/14 and episode 15.
Track 1 sets up the plot of the drama, with Margaret talking about souvenirs. During track 2, Adachi has some paperwork to do that he claims he could finish in 30 minutes, but he'd rather take his time since it is the only work he has to do that day. Dojima lectures him that being a police officer is more than doing the bare minimum for your job. Dojima gets up to get coffee and notices a bag of souvenir sweets sitting there. Earlier that day, they had visitors from the prefectural police HQ in a nearby city, and Adachi was supposed to have given them the bag.
Dojima reminds Adachi that he said he had nothing else to do besides his paperwork, and orders Adachi to deliver the souvenir in person, even offering to finish his paperwork for him. Adachi says he does not want to go alone when Yu arrives at the Inaba PD to give Dojima a document he forgot at home. Yu is also headed towards the neighboring city to help his friend, Ai. Dojima tells Adachi to give Yu a ride so he will not have to go alone, and Adachi finally gives in, having run out of excuses. He thinks it is such a drag that the two of them have to go so far, but Yu welcomes the break from doing his summer homework and does not mind helping a friend in need.
On the drive over during track 3, Adachi tells Yu he does not want to deal with the people at the prefectural headquarters since they look down on people who work in the smaller areas. Yu thinks he might be overthinking this, but Adachi knows from experience since he used to work in a larger city. Yu expresses his surprise that Adachi used to be stationed in a larger city. He asks what happened to Adachi and if he used to be competent as well, which annoys Adachi. Yu has a romantic idea of the police being in charge of protecting everyone, even if you are just an officer in the countryside. Adachi complains about police work being tedious and nothing like cop shows.
Yu asks Adachi why he became a police officer, then. Adachi says it is hard to explain, but maybe he will explain to Yu one day when he is older. Suddenly, Adachi's car breaks down. Adachi wants to grab a cab back to Inaba, but Yu wants to fulfill his promise to Ai. He says he will walk to the train station and even offers to deliver Adachi's souvenir for him, but Adachi knows Dojima will chew him out if he lets Yu do it, so he goes with him. During tracks 3 and 6, Yu repeatedly tries to help people, but it backfires on him, and the souvenir sweets get crushed after they get off the train. Seeing this, Adachi gives up and goes to a cafe near the ticket gate while trying to contact Dojima to let him know what happened. Yu tries to encourage him, but Adachi points out how all of Yu's effort has gone awry.
Discouraged, Yu continues and meets up with Ai in track 8. Back at the cafe, Adachi dials the Dojima household and gets Nanako. Nanako says that her dad is not home yet because he said he will not be coming home until later because he is waiting for someone back at the police station. After meeting with Ai, Yu finds Adachi again and encourages him to keep going so long as someone believes in you. Adachi buys another souvenir and finally delivers it to the prefectural police HQ.
In track 9, Adachi notices that Yu's spirits have been lifted. He and Yu are outside the prefectural HQ when the rest of the Investigation Team shows up. They mistakenly thought that Adachi had arrested Yu and came to either get him released or all get arrested together. Adachi is impressed they went so far, commenting that he personally would never go so far and do something like that. Adachi takes his leave, assuming they want to go home together. At the Inaba PD, Dojima commends him for getting his job done, even though it took a while.
A Day of the May Fool
A bonus audio drama for Persona 4 The Animation.
Adachi appears on track 5. Daisuke is playing soccer with Nanako when Adachi suddenly runs by, breathlessly chasing a suspect running from him and Dojima. Daisuke kicks the ball at the suspect to help out. After apprehending the suspect, Adachi tries to order him to move. The suspect snaps back at him, and Adachi gets scared due to the suspect's eyes looking scary and immediately apologizes to him. At the Inaba Police Department, Adachi tries to take the suspect's name down, but the suspect refuses until Dojima orders him to write it on paper. Adachi tries to act tough like Dojima after seeing how the suspect obeyed him and attempts to order the suspect to write out the pronunciation of his name. He immediately drops the act when the suspect scares him again.
Later, Naoto speaks with a colleague about the Inaba serial murders and how Naoto will soon go to Inaba to join the investigation. The two talk about how the murderer is still out there, and this leads into the beginning of track 8, with Adachi humming the Junes theme song. Though he is supposed to be on duty, Adachi slacks off at Junes, eating mayo cabbage bread and drinking cabbage juice in the food court. Yu, who is on his way to Okina to meet up with his friends for a group date, comes up to him and surprises him, asking Adachi what he is doing. Yu correctly guesses that Adachi is slacking off and informs Adachi that he saw his uncle searching for him in the Central Shopping District. Hearing this, Adachi panics and hurries off.
A Sense of Gratitude
The first audio drama for Persona 4 The Golden Animation.
Adachi appears on track 3. Dojima bribes him with a free meal to help plant vegetables in the garden outside the Dojima house, which is shown in episode 6. Dojima asks Adachi if he is finished setting up his part of the garden. Adachi responds that he is, and whines about having to help with the garden in exchange for a meal. Dojima remarks that only those who work get to eat. Adachi complains again, saying they've done enough work for today. Yu laughs, thanks Adachi for his help, and says he plans on giving Adachi some of the vegetables after they have grown. Adachi is surprised to hear that they're planning on growing cabbages in the plots he was helping with, though Yu thought Adachi liked cabbage. Adachi explains he is surprised because the garden plots look too narrow for cabbages to grow in. This comment irritates Dojima, who sarcastically apologizes to him for the cabbage plots being too narrow.
Previously, during the first half of track 3, Yu agreed to make curry for his friends and asked them what they put in their curry to give it a subtle, personal flavor. He asks Adachi the same question. Adachi is confused by the question, and Yu explains that he plans on making his friends curry with the vegetables from the garden. Adachi is surprised he can cook, and answers that he does not add anything. Yu asks if he ever makes his own curry, and Adachi replies that he does not since you can get good curry that comes packed in retort pouches. When he feels like being fancy, he eats it with karaage. Adachi suddenly gets a craving for curry as its been a while since he had it, but Nanako mentions they are already planning on going to Chinese Diner Aiya that day. He blames this sudden craving on Yu. Yu offers to give him some curry when he makes it for everyone else, but Adachi says he'd prefer it be from a girl. While Nanako waters the garden, Adachi talks to Yu about how he seems to have so many hobbies and how he must be using up all of his pocket money, especially now that he has a scooter too.
Boo: I Bear a Grudge On You
The second audio drama for Persona 4 The Golden Animation.
Adachi appears on track 4, drinking with Dojima at Shiroku Pub. Dojima pressures Adachi to drink more, and Adachi remarks about how annoying this is under his breath. Dojima begins drunkenly complaining about Naoto, saying that a kid like that should be in school. Adachi points out that Naoto is in school, and even attends Yasogami High. Dojima gets pissed at how Adachi took that so literally. He goes on to complain about Naoto only being a high schooler, but being allowed to work on the murder case. Adachi says that Naoto is allowed on cases because Naoto is supposed to be some genius detective, and even praises Naoto, suggesting that they might not have been able to capture Mitsuo without Naoto's help. Dojima is aware of that, which only makes him more upset. He hits Adachi, finishes his beer, and gets another, but spills while pouring it into a glass and Adachi has to trouble the barkeep to clean up after them.
Adachi tries to find a silver lining in the situation to appease Dojima. He suggests it is great they caught Kubo because now they will have lots of free time now that the murder case is over. Dojima starts to get mad at Adachi bringing up "free time", but Adachi quickly pivots and suggests Dojima take Nanako somewhere with their free time. This successfully distracts Dojima, but he instead begins suggesting Adachi come over to the house for dinner again. Dojima gets more and more drunk, again telling Adachi to come over. He says they can leave the cooking to Yu and also something about the four of them being together before he finally passes out. Adachi gets a phone call out of the blue about a suspicious person being at Yasogami High and is ordered to go check it out. Adachi suggests to Dojima that they go investigate this suspicious person, but Dojima is out cold. Adachi complains about how annoying this is again before getting the idea to pawn it off on someone else, which turns out to be Naoto.
Adachi appears again briefly on track 8, chatting on the phone with the officer who called him during track 4 about the suspicious person at Yasogami High. Adachi tells the other person on the line that he sent Naoto on ahead since this might be related to the previous murder incidents, and he will be headed over soon himself. After hanging up, Adachi complains about how annoying this is and orders another beer instead. Having overheard his phone call, Old Lady Shiroku calls him a bad man for lying, but she does not mind.
Stage Play Appearances
Visualive Persona 4
Adachi is a supporting character in Visualive, the first stage play adaptation of Persona 4. He gets used in the stage play as a comic relief character, similar to how he is in the game. He is portrayed by Masami Ito. The stage play covers from after Rise's dungeon to Mitsuo's dungeon. During the performance recorded for the DVD of Visualive, the protagonist was named Yuya Seta, and he will be referred to by this name.
The stage play opens on a rainy day with Adachi, Kou Ichijo, and Daisuke Nagase. Adachi is interrogating Daisuke because shopkeepers say a high school boy shoplifted a magazine, and Adachi thinks Daisuke is the thief. Kou says that Daisuke did not do it and reminds Adachi that he has already gone through Daisuke's bag. Yuya shows up and inquires about what is going on. As Adachi starts rambling and thinking about contacting Yasogami High, Yuya repeatedly tries to get Adachi's attention before finally shouting his name. Yuya hands him a magazine that he found elsewhere, helping prove Daisuke's innocence. Adachi finally lets Daisuke go, and he runs off to soccer practice with Kou following.
Yuya asks Adachi about the murder case. Adachi assumes he is quite interested in it, and reveals that Dojima is concerned about Yuya sticking his head where it does not belong. Morooka appears after, sees Yuya speaking with a detective, and assumes that one of his students has done something wrong. Adachi claims they were just gossiping, and Yuya was even talking about how much he likes Morooka as a teacher. Yuya misunderstands what Adachi is doing and says he did not say that at all, before realizing what is going on and backing up Adachi by saying Morooka is an amazing teacher. Adachi gets a call from a superior and leaves Yuya with Morooka.
Shortly after, Morooka is found dead. After Dojima goes over a briefing about his death at the police station, Adachi enters and mentions that he saw Morooka only yesterday. The two talk about the case, with Dojima trying to link together the ones who have died and the ones who have gone missing. Adachi reports that his nephew's Investigation Team is also on the move, which frustrates Dojima. Before the two leave the station, Adachi reminds Dojima to call home and let Nanako know he will be late.
The Investigation Team meets in the Junes food court to discuss Moroka's murder. Adachi appears after them, eating a corn dog and carrying a cabbage in a shopping bag. Adachi mentions that the special consulting detective, Naoto, has a suspect already. He does not know the suspect's name, but he does know it is a high school student. The Investigation Team gets concerned, but Adachi lets them know it is not someone from their school. Additionally, Adachi has a message from Naoto for the Investigation Team. He takes out his notebook and reads Naoto's message, stating that their fun will likely come to an end soon. Adachi does not understand what "fun" the message is referring to, but the Investigation Team realizes Naoto is referring to the TV World. Yuya begins stuttering, and he and his friends play dumb about the real meaning behind Naoto's message. Adachi gets a phone call from Dojima and has to take off.
Dojima attempts to do footwork around Inaba for the investigation, with Adachi trailing after him and complaining about being exhausted. Dojima is confident that the suspect is still in Inaba, but Adachi has his doubts. Adachi starts telling Dojima a story about how he met someone interesting (later revealed to the Moel gas station attendant) when he first arrived in town. But each time he tries to tell it, Dojima gets a phone call which interrupts Adachi. After the third time this happens, Dojima says there was a report about students from Yasogami High sniffing around, trying to find the murder suspect. He storms off with Adachi following.
Adachi later tells Dojima the story he tried to tell him earlier about when he visited the Moel gas station to fill up his tank after he had first arrived in town. While backing into the station, the attendant does not tell Adachi when to stop and he bumps his car into something. After apologizing, the attendant asks Adachi about what kind of gas he wants and if he wants the windows done. Adachi assumes he was referring to his car's windows, but the attendant instead cleans the windows on the gas station. Next, the attendant takes Adachi's ashtray and uses it as a bowling ball. Upon discovering that Adachi is a detective, the attendant even tries using the police radio in his car. The Social Link noise plays during their interactions as if Adachi is choosing the correct dialogue options with the attendant.
The attendant gets Adachi to pump his gas himself by pretending to not know how to operate the pump. While Adachi does so, he talks to himself about how boring life in Inaba is. The attendant asks Adachi about where he came from and if it is interesting since he thinks Inaba is so boring. Adachi tells him a story about his time in the city, but the attendant does not actually find it interesting. Adachi starts to tell another story, and this time the attendant falls over laughing before Adachi even says anything. Adachi helps the attendant up, taking his hand in the process. Adachi leaves the gas station, bumping into something yet again thanks to the attendant's instructions.
Back in the present, Dojima asks him what that was all about, and Adachi admits he has no idea why he started telling that story either. Dojima moves on to talk about the murder cases and their suspect, Mitsuo. They can only connect Mitsuo to Morooka's murder, meaning another suspect might be out there.
While the Investigation Team fights Shadow Mitsuo inside the TV World, there is a silent montage showing what everyone else in Inaba is up to. Dojima appears on a street, seemingly investigating a crime. Adachi follows after him carrying an umbrella. Dojima grabs Adachi by the collar and gets frustrated at him then leaves, with Adachi trailing after him yet again.
Visualive Persona 4: The Evolution
Adachi is a supporting character in Visualive the Evolution, the second stage play adaptation of Persona 4 and sequel to Visualive. He is again portrayed by Masami Ito. The second stage play covers from Naoto's dungeon to the true ending. During the performance recorded for the DVD of Visualive the Evolution, the protagonist was named Hayato Asakawa, and he will be referred to by this name.
The stage play opens with the Investigation Team fighting Shadow Naoto in the Secret Laboratory. Hayato and the rest of the Investigation Team get knocked out. Margaret appears and reminds him of the bonds he has formed with people around Inaba. One of which is his uncle Dojima. After Dojima is introduced, Adachi piggybacks on his introduction and runs in asking Dojima for permission to leave a crime scene due to an emergency. The "emergency" turns out to be that Junes is having a special sale on cabbages. Dojima begins laughing, Adachi laughs as well, then Dojima hits him.
Adachi is represented on-screen as a bond formed under the Jester Arcana. Hayato recalls his bonds with his uncle plus Adachi but admits he was not really thinking of Adachi which gets a laugh out of the audience. Thanks to the power of his friends (and Adachi), Hayato is able to stand and finish off Shadow Naoto. Following this, "Shadow World" plays as the opening song that credits the names of the performers. Dojima and Adachi appear together during this sequence in the Junes food court. Adachi begins playing with a cabbage, and Dojima chases him off stage when he sees him goofing off.
After Naoto officially joins the Investigation Team, everyone meets up at Junes and recaps the case until now on the lower stage. Concurrently, on the upper stage, Dojima and Adachi are in a room at the police station, also going over the case until now. When discussing Saki, Adachi enters the office room and looks at her file. He mentions how she was an upperclassman of Dojima's nephew. When Mitsuo comes up, Adachi talks about how scary it is that a high schooler did all of that, and then he leaves the office.
Adachi is on his way to Dojima's house when he comes across Hayato helping Namatame, whose delivery truck has a flat tire on the side of the road. Hayato tries to get his attention and then yells at him again. Adachi turns around and jokes about arresting Hayato since he addressed him as "Adachi" instead of "Adachi-san". The Moel gas station attendant shows up after. Adachi asks him why he is there, and Namatame says he called him to help fix his flat tire. The attendant takes a look around and sees that Namatame, Adachi, and Hayato have all gathered in one spot, and remarks on what a coincidence this is. They do not understand what he means by this. The attendant continues that they will all understand one day, then bids them goodbye. While Namatame gives Hayato a package for Dojima, Adachi watches the attendant walk off and reminds Namatame that the attendant did not actually fix his flat tire at all. Namatame rushes after the attendant while Adachi and Hayato continue on to Dojima's house.
Dojima brings home a large platter of sushi for dinner which Adachi takes from his hands and excitedly unwraps. Hayato gives Dojima the package from Namatame. While Dojima is putting it away, Adachi uses this opportunity to steal the only piece of sea urchin on the platter, which Dojima yells at him about. After Adachi runs off with it, Dojima notices that he is not eating it for some reason, and asks Adachi what is wrong. Adachi turns around, mentioning that his sea urchin is green rather than orange-red, as it has a ton of wasabi on it. Dojima walks off stage and then comes back with a water bottle for Adachi.
Adachi looks to Hayato for help, but Hayato just tells him to hurry up and eat it. Dojima offers to lend Adachi his strength. He begins chanting, "Eat... it..." while clapping. The audience also joins in until Adachi finally gives everyone a salute and eats it. After recovering, Adachi complains about not having a lot of money for food. Hayato offers to make him lunches, but Dojima does not want his nephew to spoil Adachi. Adachi thinks that is very motherly of Hayato to offer, and asks if he is also going to be part of the upcoming crossdressing pageant at his school cultural festival too. This gets an overblown reaction out of Dojima.
Following Namatame and Dojima's car crash, Dojima is admitted to the hospital. Adachi and Naoto arrive at the hospital together after looking through Namatame's delivery truck. Naoto reads Namatame's journal out loud, and observes that the people who were not announced to the public are also recorded in there. Adachi takes the journal from Naoto and proclaims the case must be over. Naoto stares at Adachi for a while after he says this. When Dojima's condition gets worse, Adachi follows the nurses who take Dojima away while the Investigation Team goes into the TV to save Nanako.
After Nanako has been rescued, her condition worsens and she flatlines. Adachi comes in after she has been declared dead and realizes Dojima is going to Namatame's room. Dojima throws himself at the guard outside of Namatame's room and Adachi tries to stop him. After Dojima has calmed down, Adachi and the guard take Dojima back to his hospital room. Naoto enters Namatame's room while it is unguarded. The Investigation Team talks to Namatame and hears out his side of the story. Nanako revives, and Adachi rushes in to let the Investigation Team know she is okay now, then goes to tell Dojima the good news.
After thinking about the case and talking to people around Inaba, the Investigation Team has come to a conclusion about who the culprit is. Adachi shows up at Junes, asking why Hayato called him there. The team accuses him of being the real culprit, pointing out all of the suspicious things about him. Naoto mentions that when Saki went missing, she had been called in for questioning by the police, and Adachi was the officer who had called her in. Yukiko brings up how he came to the Amagi Inn to protect Mayumi. Naoto also recalls the time when Adachi declared the case was over after reading Namatame's journal. Adachi gets annoyed and tells them all to quit playing detective.
Hayato brings up the threatening letters that showed up at his house without any postage, and how Adachi could have dropped them off without looking suspicious. Adachi, again, says to quit playing detective. He gets cocky and congratulates the Investigation Team for catching the culprit. Hayato directly asks him if he killed Mayumi and Saki, to which Adachi replies that he did. He was a fan of Mayumi's, and he thought Saki was cute and would be okay with an older guy since he saw her with Namatame. But both of them rejected him, so he pushed them into TVs.
Similar to the game, Adachi complains about his life in the countryside and vents his frustrations about the world at large, concluding that the world really is shit. The Investigation Team admits that not everything goes everyone's way, but they still do their best to face reality. Hayato has heard enough and says they will finish things with Adachi. Everyone is moved into the TV World automatically. Adachi summons Magatsu-Izanagi and remarks on how his and Hayato's Personas look alike, and wonders if that means they are alike as people. Kanji tells him to shut up, saying Hayato is nothing like Adachi. Adachi thinks that's rude and thinks Hayato should make an effort to get along with him since they are both chosen ones. Yosuke tells Adachi that he is no "chosen one", just a criminal. This angers Adachi, and he takes on all of the Investigation Team at once with a katana.
Naoto shoots the katana out of Adachi's hand, but Adachi is able to retrieve it before Kanji can grab it. Hayato declares that they will always keep moving forward, and their bonds will not let them lose to Adachi, who only knows how to run from reality. Adachi gets angry after hearing this and almost stabs Chie. In retaliation, Yukiko uses her fan like a boomerang to knock out Adachi, finally defeating him. Adachi then turns into Ameno-sagiri. However, even after defeating Adachi and Ameno-sagiri, the fog does not lift from Inaba. Rather than receiving a letter from Adachi, Hayato goes to the Velvet Room and gets the orb from Margaret which he then uses to fight Izanami by himself.
During the post-credits encore of "Shadow World", Adachi returns to the stage and dances with everyone else.
Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold
The stage play adaptation of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax combines plot elements from the game's Episode P4, Episode P3, and Episode Adachi. It is a sequel to the Persona 4 Arena stage play, Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena. Adachi is a primary character. His voice actor from the video games and anime, Mitsuaki Madono, portrays him.
The stage play opens with Adachi being interrogated by an older detective and a younger detective about the Inaba murder case. The older detective brings up Dojima, leading to the scene from the game where Adachi brings up the older detective's own reputation and the detective hits him. Before the detective can hit Adachi again, Sho, who is standing outside of the interrogation room, takes control of the older detective. Sho forces him to remove his gun and shoot his younger partner in the shoulder. Adachi asks who the newcomer is, then enters the TV as he is instructed.
During the opening performance of "Break Out Of..." that introduces the characters, Adachi appears last. Adachi remains on stage along with the Investigation Team and begins fighting them with a sword. Yosuke tells Adachi that a lot of people will die, but Adachi just insults their dedication to justice. After fighting off each member of the Investigation Team, only Yu is left to face Adachi. As the two cross swords, Minazuki comes on stage and there is a flashback to when Adachi first entered the TV during the cold opening. Minazuki welcomes Adachi to Sho's world, and Adachi asks what he wants. Minazuki declares his intention to destroy the world for Sho's sake, and for that, he needs Adachi's help. Adachi says this piques his interest, and he agrees to help Minazuki.
After the Investigation Team enters the TV World, Yu and Yosuke meet Sho and learn about his plot to destroy the world, and the rest of the Investigation Team fights fake Shadows of themselves. Following these two events, the entire Investigation Team meets up with one another in the Yasogami High School version of the Tartarus. There, they encounter Adachi, and think he might be a fake at first. Adachi explains that he planned on behaving himself, but someone asked him for his help. Yosuke identifies that person as Sho. Kanji and the rest of the Investigation Team want to fight Adachi, leading to the fight that was depicted after the opening. After watching his friends fight Adachi, Yu yells at everyone to stop. He asks Adachi why he is doing this when he promised he would follow the rules. Yu continues that he believed in Adachi.
Sho enters and asks if Adachi has finished his reunion with the Investigation Team and gets upset at him for slacking off. Sho fights the Investigation Team by himself and uses his special power to prevent all of them from moving. He goes to attack Yu using this advantage. Before he can, Adachi interferes and tells him they do not need to try so hard. Sho gets upset at Adachi and says he wants to kill him, but Adachi reminds him that Sho and his alternate personality need him for something. Sho threatens to destroy everyone there, but Labrys takes him by surprise and attacks him. He loses his control over all of the Investigation Team, and Adachi is seen lowering his gun off to the side. After the Investigation Team reunites with the Shadow Operatives, Adachi re-appears and points out how they have exhausted themselves, but Sho has probably collected enough Persona Fragments by now.
While Yu and Labrys get a ride to the top of the tower from Elizabeth, Sho celebrates as he has finished collecting Persona Fragments and can bring his world to fruition. Adachi shows up and shoots at the crystalized Fragments, remarking that one shot isn't good enough. Sho attacks Adachi over this betrayal, but Adachi fires a warning shot at him. Before Adachi can shoot at the Persona Fragments again, Sho uses his special powers to control his body and prevent him from moving. Sho says he only needed the power within Adachi, not Adachi himself. He then threatens to kill Adachi and starts attacking him. Sho raises his katana, but before he can kill Adachi, Labrys and Yu show up together. While Labrys fights Sho by herself, Yu goes to help Adachi. Similar to the game, Adachi tells Yu that he was not doing this for him or his friends before he passes out.
Later, Hi-no-Kagutsuchi proves to be a powerful enough enemy to take out everyone else in the Investigation Team and Shadow Operatives, leaving Yu as the only person standing. Adachi reappears from the stairs of the audience seating and summons Magatsu-Izanagi to help Yu. Adachi returns to the stage, stopping to take a little breather and introduce himself to an audience member on the way. Adachi mocks Hi-no-Kagutsuchi and does an insulting impersonation of him. He mentions he heard from Minazuki that the deity is weak to the power that Adachi still has remaining inside of him. Adachi makes it back to the stage and helps Yu weaken Hi-no-Kagutsuchi, giving the others enough time to recover so they can all stand back up and defeat Hi-no-Kagutsuchi together. Following their victory, Elizabeth teleports everyone to a safe location. Inside the TV studio, Yu and Adachi meet one last time by themselves and have the same conversation from the end of Episode Adachi where Yu wishes him good luck.
During the ending reprisal of "Break Out Of..." after the credits, Adachi appears again with the rest of the cast.

CR Persona 4 The Pachinko
Adachi appears in the officially licensed Persona 4 Pachinko game. He can found randomly during normal mode when the player walks around Inaba and meets various NPCs from the game. When the player gets a probability change bonus,[107] one of the scenarios is that a voiced animated cutscene unique to the Pachinko game will play where the Investigation Team identifies Adachi as the culprit.[108] Adachi is also encountered as a boss during Battle Mode. He has voiced animated cutscenes unique to the Pachinko game of him using his gun and Magatsu-Izanagi to fight the player with a remix of "The Almighty" as the background music.[109]

Kotodaman
Adachi appeared as a unit in the Persona collab for the mobile game Kotodaman during the collab's original run in 2020, and once again during the rerun in 2024. He is a non-gacha character who can primarily be obtained by defeating him in his descent boss stage. The player can also obtain up to 10 copies of Adachi by exchanging Blank Skill Cards at the event shop. As a game character, Adachi is a 5★ darkness-attribute unit who can be used to form words using the first syllable of his family name (あ・ぁ). He can evolve into a 6★ unit and after reaching maximum blessings he can use the first syllable of his given name (と・ど). His 3+ syllable and 4+ syllable skills are named Ghastly Wail and Vorpal Blade, two skills that he has during his boss fight in Persona 4.[114]
Trivia
General
- Adachi's primary Japanese pronoun is 僕 (boku). There are a few lines where he switches to using 俺 (ore), such as when he says the Investigation Team has no idea what he has been through in Persona 4,[115] or when he says the nimono lady used him as a placeholder for her real son during his rank 6 Social Link event in Persona 4 Golden.[116]
- Adachi's favorite foods are sushi (especially sea urchin), beef dishes, and cabbage dishes.[1][3] One of the reasons why he took to Dojima is because Dojima took him to get sushi when they first met.[117]
- Adachi is noted as being terrible at paperwork and not very good at cleaning his room either.[1][3]
- Adachi is associated with cabbages due to his July NPC dialogue in Persona 4 where he says he bought cabbages.[5] In Persona 4 Golden, he still has it as dialogue, but his Social Link dialogue takes priority.[6] According to Atlus, he ate slices of cabbage with mayo and miso while he drank beer.[118]
- Adachi's hobby is doing gun maintenance.[1][3] Atlus later clarified that he does maintenance on model guns at home since he cannot take his service weapon home.[119]
- The lighter Adachi takes out of his pocket during the Adachi Ending is one he keeps on him in case he needs to give Dojima a light. Adachi himself does not smoke.[120]
- While Adachi is never shown wearing glasses in Persona 4, he has aviators as his glasses option in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax,[2] and wears similar looking glasses during his high school flashback in episode 7 of Persona 4 The Golden Animation.[121]
- In 2014, Adachi was voted the #2 favorite male Persona character amongst Tokyo Game Show attendees.[122]
- In 2015, Adachi was voted #3 on a top 10 Persona 4 Golden characters poll.[123]
Persona 4
- Adachi's badge which he takes out on June 23rd while arresting Rise's photographer stalker uses his old red herring concept art as his portrait.[124]
- The datamined unused English voice lines from Persona 4 that are available on The Cutting Room Floor confirm that Adachi is the person in the fog who appears on April 29th,[43] June 4th,[44] and October 5th.[45] Even though the voiced lines were unused, the lines of text dialogue are still used in-game, and the voice in the unused audio is identifiable as Adachi's English voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch.
- Additional datamined, unused dialogue that was recorded but not used in-game has Adachi saying that he would not tell anyone about seeing Saki with Namatame so long as Saki did whatever he asked[125] and Adachi calling Magatsu-Izanagi by name[126] when the Persona's name is otherwise not spoken or written in the PS2 game.
- Magatsu Inaba having two layers represents Adachi's thoughts and the yellow tape shows that part of him still knows he is a detective.[50]
Persona 4 Golden
- If the protagonist tends to the home garden on August 22nd, Nanako will mention that she showed Adachi an earthworm and he ran away, saying he didn't like bugs.[127]
- In Japanese, the protagonist and Adachi's arcana are both called The Fool, but each written with different kanji to tell them apart. The protagonist's is written as 愚者 (gusha) and Adachi's is written 道化師 (dōkeshi).[128][129][130]
- Adachi's Jester Arcana represents someone who has stopped their journey and fallen in contrast to the Fool who has only just begun their journey.[131]
- Adachi's Hunger Arcana holds the meaning of doing what you want rather than doing what is logical, and it represents not only him, but also the protagonist.[132][133]
- Due to what happens before his boss battle, it is unclear if Adachi's Magatsu-Izanagi is truly a Persona or a Runaway Shadow.[134]
Persona 5
- If Joker interacts with the TV in Leblanc on December 12th, the "Suspect Under Investigation" on the TV show with two men in an interrogation room references one of Adachi's lines from Persona 4.[n] It is left ambiguous about who this figure is, though the game suggests that the show is just a work of fiction. Back on May 2nd, Morgana says that the TV show with the men in the interrogation room is a cop drama.[138] Additionally, the prosecution already brought forth charges against Adachi four years ago as explained in the epilogue to Episode Adachi in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, and he was thus no longer "under investigation".
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
- Adachi is familiar with the Moonlight Bridge because he used to be stationed near the Iwatodai city center. He would take long drives back to HQ from crime scenes to drive over the bridge to imitate a popular detective TV show character. It is not stated if he went from Iwatodai to Inaba or if he was somewhere else in between. The hosts of the Persona Stalker Club identify the detective show being referenced as Bayside Shakedown while showing a clip of Adachi in his yellow Mods coat.[139] The connection between the two is that the main character of Bayside Shakedown is also a detective in a red tie and a Mods coat who collects model guns and drives over the Rainbow Bridge (the real life model for the Moonlight Bridge).[140]
- Adachi's alternate colors include Katsuya Suou from Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (palette #9), a Velvet Room attendant (palette #23), and Yu Narukami (palette #28). Additionally, his 10th palette is based on Yuuki Terumi from the Blazblue series, and his 11th palette is based on Robo-Ky II from Guilty Gear Isuka.
- In Adachi's victory screen versus Sho, he references the line he tells the protagonist during the Social Link scene during Izanami's boss fight in Persona 4 Golden.[141] This callback is lost in English as it was localized differently in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax than in Persona 4 Golden.[142][71]
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
- Adachi's P-Colors alternate costume is a reference to Katsuya Suou from Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.
Persona 4 The Golden Animation
- Adachi's cell phone in Persona 4 The Golden Animation is a Sharp SH-02C. His is colored red and black in the anime, which was not a real color scheme made by Sharp.[143][144]
- In December 2014, Nico Nico Douga announced a Persona 4 The Golden Animation Cafe featuring Adachi to commemorate the release of volume 4 of the anime's BD/DVD.[145] The cafe can be seen in the anime's related gallery.
- When "Ying Yang" was performed on day 2 of Persona Super Live P-Sound Wish 2022: Crossing Journeys, there was a new recording of Adachi saying a modified version of two of his lines from episode 25 of Persona 4 The Animation.[o] This introduction was left out of the soundtrack for the Super Live. During the song, Adachi's choreographer from Persona 4: Dancing All Night and Yu's actor from the Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold play also performed on stage as the characters.[146]
BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle
- Adachi's alternate color palette #17 in BBTAG was originally a Persona 4 Arena Ultimax color palette that was exclusively available through Taito's NesicaxLive service.[147]
Metaphor: ReFantazio
- Adachi's Jester arcana card appears in the animation for the Persona Master's Masquerade Charge synthesis skill.
Development
Persona 4
- Adachi was originally designed in a very conspicuous manner because he was supposed to be a red herring. After his role in the story changed, he was redesigned to his current design.[148][149] Adachi's red herring design can be seen in his gallery.
- Before Adachi was redesigned and rewritten, the plot had Namatame as a well-meaning but ill-informed true culprit, but there'd be a feeling that another more powerful being was still out there. Atlus added the role that Adachi would eventually fulfill—the new, true culprit—as a stepping stone between the two because they felt the story was not developed enough.[150] They half-jokingly thought about having this be Yukiko and also considered Yosuke before settling on Adachi.[151] The reasoning for picking Adachi was that his character was originally a character who gave information about the police investigation to the main characters,[152] and Katsura Hashino thought this character's irresponsibility with information made him a fitting antagonist because one of the game's themes was how information is obtained.[153] But Hashino also felt it necessary to change Adachi's character when fitting him into this new role because he thought he would otherwise stand out too much.[154]
- Soejima's concept art of Adachi includes a sketch of him wearing a yellow Mods coat.[155][156] Adachi never wears this in Persona 4. He does wear it in Persona 4 Golden The Animation, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, and Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle.
- Adachi's given name, Tohru, used to be Tamotsu. Due to the fan reactions to Adachi before the game came out, a famous Japanese spoiler from the 1983 ADV game The Portopia Serial Murder Case, and Atlus being overly cautious about what players knew about the culprit, he was renamed Tohru. At the time, the voice actors had already recorded the audio for the game, so Hashino had the sound team remove the audio of him introducing himself as Tamotsu.[157]
- In Japanese, the protagonist and Adachi are voiced by different voice actors. In English, however, both are voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch. During an anime convention, Bosch stated he was originally cast to play Adachi in Persona 4, but during recording, he was told he would also be voicing the protagonist who only speaks during battle. This posed an issue while later recording for Persona 4 The Animation, where the protagonist had dialogue, and he ended up with a lower range for the protagonist and a higher range for Adachi.[158]
Persona 4 Golden
- During Persona 4, Atlus had no plans to add an Adachi Social Link. While thinking of how to make the story enjoyable on a second playthrough for Persona 4 Golden, they came up with the idea to add his Social Link to show things from the killer's side.[159]
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
- The developers received a surprisingly large number of requests to see Adachi in Persona 4 Arena.[160] They wanted to include him in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax but were not sure how necessary he was for the plot, especially after the events of Persona 4.[161]
- Initially, there were no plans for Adachi to have a story DLC, though there was talk about it since he was involved in the main story and was not just a DLC fighter. A scenario writer working on Persona 4 Arena Ultimax had also worked on Persona 4 Golden and was a big Adachi fan, and he wrote Episode Adachi before it was even confirmed.[162] The staff liked that it showed the player Persona 4 Arena Ultimax from the enemies' side and clarified Adachi's stance, which could not be shown in the main episodes.[163]
- Arcsys has multiple Adachi fangirls on staff, and a lot of work was put into his animations and movements.[164] He was challenging to design; if you gave him energetic animations, then he would not look like Adachi.[165] Character designer and motion designer Yuki Sugiyama of Arcsys said their overall goal with Adachi's animations was to make him look "uncool, but not lame".[166] In contrast, his Persona Magatsu-Izanagi is meant to look cool.[167]
- Adachi's throw/fall move originally did not have the 2nd animation where he throws his head back to laugh before leaning forward. That part of the animation was added in during storyboarding.[168]
- The character graphics team wanted to incorporate parts of Adachi's appearance in Persona 4, such as the way he walks into his boss fight. There was also an idea to include telephone poles in his Instant Kill, though it was ultimately dropped.[169][170]
- When composing Adachi's battle theme, "Fool or Clown?", composer Atsushi Kitajoh wanted the track to express how odd Adachi is. At first, it sounded like boss music but he felt that didn't fit Adachi so he lightened the sound.[171]
- Adachi was designed to be an easy to use character due to his large female fanbase.[172] This posed a challenge to Arcsys during development as they had wanted to make him a powerhouse.[173]
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
- Planner and scenario writer Teppei Kobayashi said that Adachi dances in Yomotsu Hirasaka because it is where the protagonist goes in his dreams on his first night in Inaba. Thus, Adachi's stage may be him dreaming about dancing in-universe. The Yu who appears during Adachi's Fever Time is not him, but a part of the dream based on Adachi's perception of Yu being kind of pushy and naive. This is also reflected in how the dream Yu dances compared to the real Yu.[94]
- Kobayashi asked for Adachi's dance to represent the many sides of him and to use Adachi's own sadness to communicate that anyone could end up like him. The dance itself is based on the animation dance, which gives off the impression of the dancer's body parts being moved one by one.[174]
- Adachi's choreographer for the game[175] and Persona Super Live P-Sound Wish 2022: Crossing Journeys[176] is Tsukasa Shiroma, who also does the choreography for Shinjiro Aragaki and Morgana.[177]
Persona 4 The Animation
- In episode 13 of Persona 4 The Animation, Dojima calls Nanako to tell her that he will be late because of Adachi, who is shown getting hit on the head and kneeling on the floor while stroking a cabbage. The anime staff never came up with an explanation for what he did that earned him this punishment and left it up to the viewer's imagination.[178]
Persona 4 The Golden Animation
- In the Japanese cast and staff commentary for episode 7, the anime creative staff says what is shown in the anime is just their interpretation of Adachi, encourages fans to come up with their own take, and emphasizes that only the original creators (Atlus) have all the answers.[95]
- The anime's Twitter account released a colored setting document showing Adachi's apartment designed for the adaptation. The accompanying text notes that his closet is full of model guns that he brought with him when he moved to Inaba, but he does not use them to decorate his place.[179] The collection of Persona 4 Golden The Animation setting files also contains the labeled line art for his apartment.[180]
Persona 4 Drama CD Vol. 3
- In the bonus track with comments from the cast, Adachi's Japanese voice actor, Mitsuaki Madono, mentions that this is the first time Adachi has been in a drama CD and that it is all thanks to fans requesting that he appear in one.[181]
Nomenclature
Adachi as a family name comes from Adachi city in Tokyo, which is presumed to have once been a wetland. The name of Adachi city is thought to be a linguistic mutation of Ashidachi, which was used to refer to reeds growing in the wetland.[182] The character used for Tohru carries the meanings of "passing through", "transparent", and "empty".[183]

Notes
- ↑ Adachi's birthday is February 1, 1984, making him 27 when Persona 4 starts (April 2011), 28 by the end of the game (March 2012), and 28 during Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (May 2012).
- ↑ After rank 8, his Arcana in Persona 4 Golden can transform from Jester to Hunger. However, in the Persona 4 The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold: Official Design Works and the Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena & The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold Super Official Design Works, Adachi's associated Arcana is the Jester, not Hunger.[2]
- ↑ When Adachi says "put [...] in" on December 5th,[30][31] Naoto is reminded of the conversation from November because, in the Japanese script, Naoto was the one who read "put [...] in" out loud from Namatame's diary.[32] The English localization makes this association unclear because Namatame's diary entry is worded differently.[33]
- ↑ In Japan, uniformed officers carry guns. A plain clothes detective like Adachi would not carry a gun unless he knew he was going to be doing something that might involve using a gun.[53]
- ↑ This is most evident in the Japanese version.[57] In English, Izanami's use of magatsu is localized as evil[58] which is also inconsistent with the localization of the compendium entry for Magatsu-Izanagi and how it says magatsu means calamity.[59]
- ↑ In the English script, Adachi instead says that his parents did not care what he did.[62]
- ↑ In the Japanese version of Persona 4 Golden, Adachi makes fun of the protagonist by using an infantile word for sleeping,[70] in line with how he uses age when talking down to the Investigation Team. In the English localization, the line was changed to Adachi asking how the protagonist could let Izanami bring him down.[71]
- ↑ At Atlus's Persona 25th Anniversary Exhibit, the storyboards and stage direction for the scene called it the 足立エンディング (Adachi Ending).
- ↑ After burning the letter, Adachi calls the protagonist his 共犯者 (kyōhansha).[72] In the movie viewer, the animated clip of Adachi and the protagonist is also called 共犯者 (kyōhansha). This word is often translated as "accomplice" and is where the phrase Accomplice Ending comes from. In the English localization of the game, this word was localized as partner in Adachi's dialogue[73] and Conspirator in the movie viewer. Notably, partner is the same word that Yosuke calls the protagonist in the English localization of the game.[74] However, the original Japanese script did not intend to remind the player of Yosuke like the English script does, as Yosuke's usage of partner comes from the word 相棒 (aibō) rather than 共犯者 (kyōhansha).[75]
- ↑ The English localization removed the word "sudden".
- ↑ In the English localization, Adachi says the prosecution has rested,[88] which would mean that he's already on trial and the prosecution has finished presenting its evidence against him. But this is a misuse of the term as the localization also has him saying, "Going to court",[89] meaning he isn't already on trial. The introduction to Episode Adachi also has him mentioning that it has been hard to build a case against him due to the nature of the murders,[90] once more indicating that he isn't already on trial. In Japanese, he says that the charges, or rather his indictment, have been decided upon.[91]
- ↑ In Japanese, Adachi uses a specific synonym for the death penalty.[92] In the English localization, Adachi less specifically says, "maximum penalty under the law".[89]
- ↑ In the game, Kanji took a piece of paper with the same things written on it from someone who was hanging around school, asking about his and Yukiko's disappearances. However, it was implied to have been Mitsuo Kubo: Kanji refers to this person as being "an eyesore"[98], and Mitsuo had appeared at Yasogami High before to ask Yukiko out.
- ↑ In Persona 4, Adachi says, "This world's gone straight to shit" after he throws Saki into the TV.[135][111] The suspect on TV says the same phrase in Japanese,[136] but it's translated differently in the English localization of Persona 5.[137]
- ↑ Adachi in Persona 4 The Animation episode 25: 「頑張ったって無駄だって。さっさと諦めりゃいいんだよ。」「おいおい。人がせっかく教えてやってんのに。ガキはこれだから無知でうざいんだよ。」
Adachi at Persona Super Live P-Sound Wish 2022: Crossing Journeys: 「あぁ。キミ達さぁ...なんでそんなに盛り上がってんの。頑張ったって無駄だって。さっさと諦めりゃいいってのに...ガキはこれだから、無知でウザいんだよ。」
Loosely translated, "Sheesh, what're you all getting worked up about? You need to learn how to quit already. This is why you kids are so damn annoying."

- ↑ "Dojima: No. That singer--Misuzu Hiiragi--has a solid alibi. [...] Same with Taro Namatame, her husband. No matter how much we shake him down, nothing links him to the murders." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Adachi: Well, if you're friends with Ms. Amagi... Keep this between us, okay? We got a call from Ms. Amagi's parents yesterday evening saying they couldn't find her anywhere. Since it was the weekend, the workers at the inn were extremely busy, and no one saw Ms. Amagi around that time. Oh, but that doesn't necessarily mean this is a case just yet! But, people've been turning up dead on foggy days, so we're really sensitive to stuff like this." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Adachi: Well, that announcer, Ms. Yamano, was staying at the Amagi Inn before the first murder. Seems Ms. Yamano had some harsh words for the manager about the staff's attitude towards guests. The stress of it caused the manager to collapse. And with Ms. Amagi being the manager's daughter... She must've felt pretty strongly about the incident, y'know. By the way, did Ms. Amagi ever hint that she might be leaving the house? 'Cause if not, there's been some theories floating around that she's laying low for some reason or another..." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Adachi: It's all pretty fishy, if you ask me... Like there's something else going on.
Dojima: Stop blabbering, dumbass!
Adachi: S-Sorry...
Dojima: Ignore him. He's just spouting some wild fantasy." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English. - ↑ "Adachi: Ugh, what did I do to deserve babysitting detail...? I-I mean, it's nothing major. It's not like Dojima-san ordered me here. So what are you kids up to? Buying snacks?" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Yosuke: We were just about to head over to the tofu shop to see Rise-chan.
Adachi: Oh... I see. H-Heyyy! I'm on my way there too!
Chie: Oh, then why don't we go there together? C'mon, he's a detective on active duty. Not a bad guy to have around!" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English. - ↑ "Adachi: Good thing we caught him! Now I can stop seeing suspects in every shadow! If the killer was still on the loose...
Dojima: Enough, Adachi! If you keep running your mouth, the sushi's gonna dry up!" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English. - ↑ "Adachi: If there'd been a fourth kidnapping and murder, we'd be back to square one again...
Dojima: Adachi...
Adachi: You know what sucks? We still don't have proof that the Kubo kid murdered anyone besides Mr. Morooka. How're we gonna make a case like this? I wonder if Dojima-san's instinct is right... Maybe there really is another perp out there. The real one...
Dojima: Adachi! How many times I gotta say it!? Quit running your mouth like that!" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English. - ↑ "Naoto: Mayumi Yamano, Saki Konishi... Yukiko Amagi, Kanji Tatsumi, Rise Kujikawa... Even the victims who survived and were never released to the public are written here. I note that Mr. Morooka's address is absent from the list...
Adachi: Wow... Then that settles it." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English. - ↑ "Adachi: He's still mentally unstable, but we're slowly piecing together his story. This is still a secret, but I guess it's okay to tell you guys... You know that diary we found? There were entries about Ms. Yamano and Ms. Konishi in it. Looks like Namatame had been making advances on Ms. Konishi." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Adachi: Hey, we could hear you in there... This is a hospital. Maybe you should quiet down a little..." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Yukiko: That can't be... I mean, he said he came to escort Ms. Yamano and...
Naoto: What...? Was he at your inn when the announcer was staying there?
Yukiko: When Ms. Yamano was staying at our inn, the media were swarming all over it. That's when Adachi-san arrived, saying he had been assigned to guard her... He told our waitress that fame could be rough...
Naoto: Guard her...? He didn't spend the night there?" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English. - ↑ "Kanji: I dunno about that, but I heard he did call out to a girl in my class. I found out this afternoon. But I thought, y'know, that's just how cops are, so I didn't think it had anything to do with the case..." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Policeman on guard: Now get out of here! I told you, he's almost ready to be transported! We can't have anything else happen... Sheesh... I better not see you rascals here again!" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Adachi: And you kids should really get home, too. You're gonna get in the way of police business.
Dojima: What's gotten into you today...? It's odd to see you taking work so seriously...
Adachi: C-C'mon, I'm always giving 110% when it comes to the job!" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English. - ↑ "Adachi: そんなの、生田目が全部入れたに決まってるだろ!" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. Japanese.

- ↑ "Naoto, Reading Namatame's Diary: The last date is today's... "I managed to take her to safety"." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Naoto: Do you recall when I read Namatame's diary at the scene of Dojima-san's accident? At the time, I said, "Even the victims who survived and were never released to the public are written here." And in response, your words were, "Wow... Then that settles it." How, I wonder, would that "settle" anything? At the time, the police had no idea that there had been other attempted murders related to the case... You had no reason to say such a thing. After all, there are countless examples of people disappearing for a few days..." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. English.

Compared to the other dungeons, these are quite small. When the two were first dropped into the TV, their dungeons were much larger, and like Yukiko and the others, they got lost in the mazes and came face-to-face with their Shadows. But since the owners of these mental images died, their dungeons have been scaled down. All that remains is a part akin to a core, like a ghost bound to the place where it died." Saki slaps Adachi.
Adachi: Huh... So I'm not good enough for you?" Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. I couldn't let that happen, or the game would be over. That's why I told the others I sent him home. I came up with the idea to put him inside the TV on the spot." Persona 4 (PlayStation 2). While the others were born from what someone was repressing inside, Adachi created his dungeon to lure in the Investigation Team and mislead them. The two-floor structure reflects Adachi's thoughts. The design of the red and black ripple-looking pattern shows power spreading out from Ameno-sagiri, who is in the center and making fog. Not only will my "rules" be taken away from me, but if the investigation into last year's case gets dropped, there'll be nothing left... That was the experience that defines who I am now.
Translation: "Interviewer: The atmosphere of [Adachi's] stage differs greatly compared to the other characters.
Teppei Kobayashi: He dances to "The Fog (Atlus Konishi Remix)" against the backdrop of Yomotsu Hirasaka from P4. Which is also the same place that the protagonist sees in his dreams on his first night in Inaba. In other words, this dance may or may not be Adachi dreaming in reality (laughs). Accordingly, the Narukami who joins in during Fever Time isn't the normal Narukami, but rather Adachi's image of Narukami. So, we made this with the assumption that Adachi is dancing with an image of Narukami that has been burned into his brain.
Interviewer: Ah, so it's not as though you're dancing with the real Narukami.
Kobayashi: Right. Due to that, even Narukami's dance is different from how he dances with the other characters. When seen from Adachi's PoV, Narukami is this kinda pushy and naive character, and his dance reflects that as well. For those who enjoyed Episode Adachi in the home console release of P4AU, there are some shots that will make you grin, so please enjoy the dance!" Katsura Hashino: 実はいちばん最初にプロットを立てまた段階の話ですけど、今作では「情報の取り方」というのもテーマにあったんで、それを勘違い、しかも良かれと思って事件を起こしていた人を、最後の真犯人として設定していました。
Interviewer:
Translation: "Interviewer: That being the case, at what point did you come up with the character of the villain Adachi?
Katsura Hashino: Actually, this goes back to the discussions we had at the very beginning of the development when we were creating the plot, but one of the themes we hit upon was "how do we get our information." So initially, we wrote the true final villain as someone who mistakenly thought they were doing the right thing.
Interviewer: Are you talking about Namatame?
Hashino: Yeah. And there was something manipulating him behind-the-scenes, and Adachi was not the villain then. However, as the development went on, we felt the story development was lacking in something, and it needed one more twist with regard to who the true culprit was." Katsura Hashino: 「陽介はどうか?」って話が出たこともあります。彼なら、しっかりしまた考え方を持っていて決断力もあるキャラクターだったから、ユーザーも共感できる理由でこの事件全体を仕組んでいた、ということにできそうだと。悪役だけど愛されるような犯人像にしよう、っていう話もしていました。でも、仲間を犯人にするのはやっぱり抵抗がありましたね。" Translation: "Katsura Hashino: The first candidate for that role was Yukiko, actually. (laughs)

Hashino: Yeah, I mean, when you think about "murders in a small town" stories like this, a Kindaichi story would have the killer be someone like the ryokan proprietress. (laughs)
Interviewer: Oh yeah... I know what you mean.
Hashino: It was something I talked about Soejima with, only half-joking of course. The idea of Yosuke the villain also came up. He was a character with solid reasoning abilities and good judgement; it would be believable to players, we thought, that he could have plotted everything himself. Nevertheless, early on when we put Adachi's face in some of the magazine spots we did, there were apparently people who were saying "The Killer is Yasu!" in response to him… you see, actually, in the beginning, Adachi's first name used to be Tamotsu (保), which can also be read as "yasu", right? Maybe I'm overthinking it, I thought, but we were trying to really control the timing of the hints we fed to players about the killer, so we hurriedly changed his last name. (杉山)" Translation: "(Yomi Drop) Yuki Sugiyama (Arcsys): Somewhere familiar to Adachi. At first, we wanted to stage something that represented Adachi in P4. But it was somewhat difficult to balance the tempo and other things. We even had ideas to put like... telephone poles and other things in at the end of the animation." Translation: "For the versus Adachi BGM, I wanted to express how odd Adachi is rather than make a cool fighting game BGM. At first, it sounded like weighty boss music due to the progression and synths. But that kind of boss-tier heaviness doesn't fit Adachi, so the final sound was made lighter." He himself isn't very strong, but his Persona is extremely powerful. [Like Rise,] he too has a style that suits him." Famitsu, P4AU Famitsu Developer Interview. Archived: Archive.org. Published 2014. Translation: "Teppei Kobayashi: As for Adachi... If someone were similar to him in personality, I think we'd have a problem on our hands, ahaha. But the actor certainly had a peculiar vibe. Adachi is an apathetic, lazy, good-for-nothing cop. But it's not like he's completely unskilled - thinking about it, he was on track to be an elite officer at the central office, he can do coin tricks, and he's quite dexterous. I asked for his various sides to be represented in his dance. The base is called the "animation dance", which gives off the impression of your body parts being moved one by one. People typically don't move like that, but I think the dance is quite interesting. Furthermore, I wanted to show that anyone could turn out like him, so I requested that Adachi's expressions of sadness also be represented." That's up to your imagination, haha. Actually, not even during the script planning session did we figure out a reason for it... I wonder what he messed up?
