Synopsis
The drama chronologically takes place between the Secret Laboratory and Heaven, with most of the plot revolving around a sports day at Yasogami High School.
Due to his poor grades, the Investigation Team holds an emergency study session to help Kanji study. Dojima arrives at home after work with Adachi in tow, and Rise suggests they try teaching instead. Dojima refuses, saying he is a more hands-on guy. Adachi remembers things from high school but has no practical skills, evident by how Dojima criticizes him for getting lost while driving around Inaba. The two take Nanako to get dinner, and the group resumes studying. However, Kanji is repeatedly bewildered by anything related to math. Eventually, the protagonist says that Kanji can do math, just not how it is written in textbooks and at school. He points out, for example, how Kanji knows what measurements to use while cooking without a measuring cup. The protagonist encourages Kanji, telling him he is smart and can do anything he puts his mind to.
At school, the subject of sports day comes up. While all the girls have to participate in a dance number for sports day, all the boys have to run a 5km race, which only Kanji is enthusiastic about. Additionally, there is a Swedish relay event, and some boys in class 2-2 have learned that the protagonist is athletic and ask him to participate in the Swedish relay in place of someone from the track team who got injured. The boys in his class tell him they just need someone to run, they do not expect to win since class 2-1 has the track team's star runner, and it will be okay to just run at your own pace without really trying to win. The protagonist agrees to run, and reflects on his classmate's words. At home, Nanako asks about the high school sports day and learns that her dad used to be a fast runner who regularly won races in high school. Nanako wants to go to the high school sports day with her father, but he will be working on the day it's being held.
On sports day, much to everyone's dismay, Teddie becomes a commentator on the event after a student recognizes him as Kumada from Junes. Throughout the day, Naoto and Rise participate in the obstacle course and face Hanako in the piggyback riding cavalry event. During lunch, everyone leaves Teddie on his own while they check out the farmers market where the protagonist buys a cabbage. Left unattended, Teddie "accidentally" eats all of Yosuke's lunch, leaving Yosuke struggling to find something to eat before the boys' 5km run event. Yukiko and Rise offer their lunches to Yosuke, which only terrifies him. Seeing no other choice, Yosuke eats "Mystery Food X" once more.
After the boy's event, Adachi and Dojima arrive in a patrol car before the three-legged race that family members can participate in. Nanako assumes that her father will want to run with the protagonist so they can win, but Dojima reassures her that he wants to do with her. Adachi figures there is no need to actually try on the race until Yukiko mentions the winner gets gift certificates for the Amagi Inn. When talking to the protagonist, Adachi reveals that Dojima knew about the three-legged race and made it a point to get things done so he could be here for Nanako. Dojima and Nanako get 4th in the three-legged race; Nanako thinks her dad will be upset they didn't win, but Dojima tells her that 4th place is impressive.
During the Swedish relay, the protagonist puts on Kanji's headband. He reflects on what his classmate told him before about "running at your own pace" and running just so there is a person in the relay, then he runs at full speed after getting the baton. Adachi laughs at how much effort he's expending on something so pointless before taking off. The protagonist wins the race for his class even beating the track team member in 2-1, and the rest of the Investigation Team is inspired by his ability to do anything he puts his mind to. Kanji claims he, too, was able to work hard on his math, but it is shortly revealed that Naoto did most of it for him. Dojima offers to take the protagonist and Nanako out for dinner. The protagonist assumes it is to celebrate his win on the relay since he did not get a prize, but as to not let it get to his nephew's head, Dojima claims dinner is to celebrate his and Nanako's completion of the three-legged race.
